Chapter 28 - Volton's Gift

Tyler and Ara's shooting for the film is about to end. They've been busy with movie endorsements and cast exposures. All the crew, director, talent managers, and investors hold a party to celebrate their hard work. Both Slacovich and Volton attend the party to celebrate with the others. The House of Flame and Demon's Fang Entertainment talents enjoy the night together. Tyler and Ara still keep their distance and choose to mingle with others to keep their relationship hidden. Even Slacovich and the others go along with the act to hide her connection with them. Timothy and Ara's closeness makes Tyler uncomfortable, but he forces himself to ignore it. What they don't know is that Volton already has something planned for the night.

"President Demonfire, I'm so glad you and your team made it to the party," Volton says, shaking his hand and squeezing it tightly.

"Why wouldn't we be here? It's both our project anyway." He squeezes his hand back before they let go.

"I haven't seen the princess and the doctor. I wonder where they are." He grinned devilishly.

"They left for something important. I bet you already know where they're going, you've done your research pretty well this time."

"Thanks for reminding me of my dumbness. I should've done it earlier. Hope you won't regret your arrogance."

"Why not treat me to some drinks next time as a sign of gratitude if you really want to thank me?"

"I know what you're doing. I'll play along. Just set the time and place, and I'll make sure to treat you to a drink."

"As expected from a great man. I'll update you then."

Slacovich turns his back to leave Volton when all the lights go off for a few seconds. When they return, Volton's men are already in the area.

"Why not receive my thank-you gift tonight?" He chuckles and sits on a chair facing Slacovich.

"This is unexpected. What's your game?"

"Nothing really. I just want to remind you that I am far superior to you. Right, my dear Theresse?"

Dr. Spencer walks toward Volton, then sits on his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Yes, my darling. This will be a great night."

Dr. Spencer kisses him deeply in front of everyone. The talents and crew are confused. All the staff from DFE are human, while some from HFE are vampires.

"Now, now, bring all the women in front of me," Volton orders his men. They grab every woman at the party, but Slacovich defends his subordinates.

"You're not touching my people! We made a contract, you should oblige!" He steps forward angrily, protecting everyone behind him. Diego and Tyler tell them to stay behind Secretary Li, who is already deploying two drones circling their position in defense mode.

"I won't harm anyone from your staff as promised. I won't breach the contract."

Volton's men gather all the women in front of him, including Ara. He signals his men to step back as he stands and studies the faces of the women. Dr. Spencer walks beside him, examining each one. When her eyes land on Ara, she whispers to Volton, then steps back.

"Volton Hellgazer, what do you intend to do?" Tyler clenches his fists in anger.

"Be patient, boy. You're as impatient as your father. I won't harm these women… but I won't promise." He laughs loudly.

"You—!"

Diego stops Tyler and calms him down.

"Oh, why are you so triggered? Afraid I'll hurt one of them? Is she important to Demonfire, by any chance? Well, I'm just about to start the show. Ladies, be good and show me your true colors."

The crew and actresses shift into their vampire state, including Stacy, who secretly underwent the experiment just to surpass Ara. What she doesn't know is that Ara is one of them.

"You monster! What did you do to them?" Li bursts out in anger.

"They aren't test subjects! You're a coward, Volton, hiding behind an army of failed experiments!" Diego stands beside Slacovich, ready to fight.

"I'm not here to start trouble. But I don't know about them. All of my people are vampires. Everyone who works for me went through the trouble to become one. They volunteered, except for one." He looks at Ara, who clenches her fists.

"I'm sure she's the missing piece of the puzzle," Dr. Spencer says as she walks closer to Volton.

"Indeed she is. No wonder President Demonfire partnered up on this project, to protect her."

Volton flashes to Ara's side and grips her by the throat. He squeezes, but Ara locks her legs around his gripping arm and twists it, forcing him to let go. She then runs toward Slacovich's side.

"I'm sorry I failed my mission. I never thought he'd figure it out this soon." Ara's face saddens.

"It's alright. You've done well. It's my fault for being arrogant." Slacovich stands straight, removing his coat and tie, handing them to a staff member.

"What's the plan of action?" Diego asks.

"No matter what happens, don't shift into vampire form. Understood?" he murmurs, though Li and the other vampires hear it clearly.

"Understood. Copy!" they reply.

"Ara, how sad I felt the moment you turned your back on us," Timothy stands beside Volton.

"That's why I felt indifferent toward her whenever we were together. She was an enemy from the start," Stacy adds, walking beside Timothy.

"You know the whole process you went through isn't perfect. But why, Stacy? I treated you as a friend," Ara says, tears falling.

"Don't shed tears for them. They're not worth it. I find this more convenient, no more hiding. I won't allow my woman to be treated that way." Tyler wipes her tears and kisses her forehead.

"I'm glad there's no more pretending between us. But what about Elizabeth?" She looks at Elizabeth, who's shaking in fear.

"D-Don't w-worry about me. I-I just look at him like a brother. Really." Diego takes off his coat and wraps it around her.

"Let's stop the drama. It's annoying," Stacy smirks.

"Keep me entertained, then," Volton says, tapping their shoulders and sitting back, pulling Dr. Spencer onto his lap.

"As you wish. I won't hold back. Ara's mine!" Stacy rushes forward to hit Ara, but Tyler grabs her hand before it lands. Timothy grabs his hand too.

"You're mine!" Timothy throws Tyler to the ground, but Tyler lands on his feet.

"How lame," Tyler provokes as Ara kicks Stacy, making her flinch and stagger back.

Slacovich tells Li to escort their people to safety. Volton's men try to stop them and prepare to attack. Li switches the drones to attack mode. She draws her gun and shoots anyone who comes close. Diego assists her, protecting the group from behind.

The enemies attack simultaneously. The drones fire silver bullets that paralyze them. Diego grabs two enemies, knocks their heads together, and stabs them in the heart with a silver dagger, turning them to ash.

A human subordinate screams as one is bitten. Li shoots the attacker in the head, reducing them to ashes. She tends to the injured, stopping the bleeding to hide the scent. She wounds her own finger so her scent overpowers the blood. Harry discovered that their blood isn't tempting to vampires, allowing her to keep the others safe.

They head for the basement, the most secure area, equipped with high-end drones and traps. Diego and Li lead the group. Slacovich stands calmly, untouched, waiting.

He grabs a chair and places it in front of Volton, sitting just a meter away. Volton's men stay alert, but he shoos them away.

"I don't like your gift. Now that the project is done, let's end the contract."

"The moment you planted a spy on my territory, the contract was void." Volton tears it up and burns it.

Tyler and Timothy go all out. Without vampire forms, Tyler and Ara struggle. Once Slacovich sees the humans are safe, he tells Tyler and Ara to fight seriously. They shift into their vampire forms. Ara spreads her wings and flies.

Stacy can't deploy hers, the serum she received was an unstable recreation. Timothy can only partially transform. They are still in observation.

Stacy's anger causes the serum to react violently. She struggles to breathe, and her face begins deforming. She climbs and leaps onto Ara's back, choking her. But Ara's strength overpowers her. She grabs Stacy's hands and hurls her to the ground, bones cracking on impact.

Volton's men rush to attack Ara, but Slacovich kicks them away. Tyler lands a series of punches on Timothy, knocking him down.

"How pitiful. Seems the recreated serum wasn't effective at all." Timothy stands, adjusting his suit.

"Recreated serum? You're mutating humans now? Have you lost your mind?" Slacovich kicks a table at Volton, who dodges it.

"I won't stop until I have the perfect army. If you want to destroy me, you'll need to build one of your own."

Volton leaves, his men carrying the beaten bodies of Stacy and Timothy.

"An army of our own? Tch. What a joke," Slacovich mutters.

Slacovich, Tyler, and Ara leave. Diego alters the memories of the witnesses and brings them home one by one.
