Chapter 39 - CHAPTER 39

Dimitri clenched the steering wheel as his eyes glistened in the road lights, his foot steps on the gas pedal as the speed meter in his car never stops going up. Few red lights he did cross in such a hurry, while his eyes paced back in the passenger seat where his phone is still ringing.

"Come on Annie answer the damn phone." He whispered under his breath seeing his phone.

His heart stammers as anxiety grows. His mind flashing back to all the people he had dealt with, each soul he meets to each criminal he faced recently, there was too many of them to point a finger on a person, each has the reason to attack him. What fears him most is involving people around him, he had dealt several threats before and although he is scared but he is used to getting some in his line of work, but seeing Annie's photo stumbled him.

While driving, his hand reached for his phone after another attempted call is failed to reach to Annie.

"Brandon, search for Annie in the tracker." Dimitri started as soon as Brandon answered his call.

"Did something happen?___"

"Just do it."

"Okay, sir."

He dropped his call and stopped a few meters away from Annie's house, quite far but he can still see her room was lit in that distance. He peeked through his windshield, waiting to catch a glimpse of her, but with no luck heh didn't. Dimitri's tapping the steering wheel in hesitation, he wanted to rush through their door and check Annie but he knew it will just confuse things between them. He's been stopping himself from driving close to her house just to peek a little close, but he didn't. He wanted to end things with Annie, and seeing him again won't help her.

His phone vibrated, without a second thought, he knew it was Brandon, as he let his sigh of relief as he opened his message.

"God! Thank you!" he whispered. As he stared at Annie's location in her home. She is safe in her home and that is enough for him.

He drove him a little more calmly than he was in his previous drive, but his mind still lurked at the anonymous message. With what happened, Dimitri is more determined to talk to Annie and end things with her, to clear his mind off her, and to not involve her in any of the dangers in his job.

As soon as he got home, he texted her the location and time for their meeting. He slumped on the sofa and tossed his phone aside. For a quick minute, he sighed as his eyes started to feel heavy just before his phone lit up and rang. He knows for sure it was Annie responding to his texts, she's always quick to respond to his texts or voice mails, but his body screams more for a need of rest. He closed his eyes until the light in his phone went off.

The next morning, he found himself fixing his suit for a hearing in the court, he'll be meeting her before his hearing, he is anxious but it wasn't about a crucial hearing. Dimitri is anxious about meeting Annie. He knew her too well to know that she won't easily agree with ending things with between them after being together for several years. Dimitri knows too well as well that his job is getting in the way for her safety and for her peace. One could say, he can abandon some cases for her sake, but it wasn't just that for Dimitri.

Dimitri is cunning and too ambitious to even abandon something that he knows he can win and knows that between his ambitions and hers, she is the one who will fall out and hinder him. Determined with his decision, he took a final look in the mirror and with a slight nod, he went off to meet her.

His fingers couldn't stop tapping on the table as he looked around, waiting for any hint of her. It has been almost an hour that he's been waiting for Annie, and Dimitri grows even more anxious. In all of their dates, Annie had never been late; she hated being late, and with that text message he received last night, he couldn't stop himself to worry.

He kept on fiddling with his phone, staring at the unknown number that texted him last night and back at Annie's photo that they sent. It was her holding a phone and a drink at the bar counter. He never blinked as he counted the people who had the motive to threaten him like this. He spared a look at the time as ten more minutes passed and she hadn't arrived.

Without any more patience to wait for more, he stood up and started dialing her phone, as made his way in the cafe's exit, he was stopped to see her crossing the street holding her phone. He stared at her as she made her way to the cafe. His eyes fell on the way her hair flew along the wind, or how her skirt danced along her every step and even to her face which without a doubt is not happy with what they will be talking about once they are sat.

As their eyes met, he couldn't move an inch but just waited for her to get close to him. It wasn't long till Dimitri came back to his senses of the purpose of their meeting today.

"Where were you?" He asked, not taking his eyes off her.

"I was in the car." Annie sarcastically answered and flipped her hair.

His eyes followed her every move as she walked back to his table and sat. "In your car?"

"It was nice, actually."

Dimitri looked at her, puzzled, but still managed to sit across her.

"You know, for once. It is you, who's waiting."

"Annie, what are you saying?"

"I was surprised, actually, as you look so worried while waiting for me. Love, I have been here an hour ago."

Dimitri sighed and rubbed his temples as his brows furrowed in irritation. "It did work!" she laughed.

Without a second thought, Dimitri called the unknown number. He is sure, but part of him wishes his hunch would be wrong. He calmly stared at her as she smiled the moment her phone rang.

"Hello my love."
