From the next day onwards, Melissa relentlessly threw herself into making amends for the pain her father had caused. She didn't allow herself to dwell on guilt or sorrow. Instead, she focused on action, determined to make things right.
Her first priority was ensuring closure for the families of those who had suffered or lost loved ones. Melissa personally reached out to every family, her voice calm but filled with genuine emotions of guilt and sorrow, fully taking responsibility for whatever happened and even willing to take punishment for her father's deed, as she met all of them face-to-face without faltering back.
"I'm here to help," she told them, her tone sincere. "I know what my father did can't be undone, but I promise to do everything in my power to give you the peace and closure you deserve. Whether your loved ones are gone or still alive, I'll make sure they are returned to you. I won't rest until this is done."
Her words carried a weight that people couldn't ignore. They saw the genuine regret in her eyes and the unwavering determination in her voice.
Many families were initially skeptical, but as days passed, and they saw Melissa relentlessly trying to make things right, their opinions began to shift.
Melissa worked tirelessly, coordinating with as many as possible in efforts to locate the bodies of those who had died and ensuring they were respectfully returned to their families.
Each time she handed over a loved one's remains, she stayed to comfort the grieving, and even told them if they need anything they can let her know and they should consider her as their own daughter.
One woman broke down in tears as Melissa handed her the ashes of her husband. "Thank you," the woman sobbed. "I thought I'd never see him again. You didn't have to do this, but you did. Thank you for atleast giving me the chance to say goodbye."
Melissa nodded, her voice steady despite the lump in her throat. "He deserved dignity, and you deserved closure. I'm sorry it took this long and I couldn't return your husband alive, but I'm here to make sure no one else suffers the way you did."
For families whose loved ones had survived, Melissa personally brought updates. "Your son is alive," she told an elderly couple one day. "He's receiving medical care in a facility, and he'll be home reunited with you very soon. I promise."
The couple cried tears of relief, clasping Melissa's hands tightly. "Bless you, Melissa. You've given us hope again. We thought we'd lost him forever."
While doing this, she even contributed to rebuilding the destruction that Izuku had caused, even when Melissa was exhausted, she never stopped.
She worked alongside the rescue teams and repair teams, repairing the damage done to I-Island. From rebuilding homes to restoring facilities, she gave her all.
One evening, as she supervised the reconstruction of a laboratory that had been destroyed during her father's schemes, a young scientist approached her hesitantly.
"Melissa… I just wanted to say thank you," he said. "What your father did—it was terrible. But what you're doing now? It's really very inspiring and touching.
You've shown us that you're not like him. You're better. If you need help with anything you want, don't hesitate even a bit to ask me, I'll make sure to help you anyway I can."
Melissa smiled faintly, brushing her hair back as she looked at him. "Thank you," she said softly. "I'm just doing what's right. I can't change the past or undo the deeds my father did, but I can make sure this island has a better future and these things don't repeat ever again."
Her efforts didn't go unnoticed. Over time, the people of I-Island began to see her not as the daughter of a man who had betrayed them and committed such monstrous atrocities, but as someone who had worked harder than anyone to right his wrongs.
One day, a group of prominent island leaders approached her. Among them was the mayor, a tall, gray-haired man with sharp eyes that softened as he spoke. "Melissa," he began, his voice formal but kind.
"The people of I-Island have seen your dedication. You've shown us what it means to take responsibility, even when you weren't the one at fault. Your efforts have brought peace to so many, and we're grateful of that."
Melissa looked at them, unsure where this was going. "Thank you," she said carefully. "But I was just doing what I needed to do. It's my responsibility afterall."
The mayor smiled. "And that's exactly why we believe you should lead the new regulatory body we're establishing.
We need someone we can trust to ensure that nothing like this ever happens on this land again. Someone who cares about the people of this island as much as you do."
Melissa's eyes widened, and she shook her head slightly. "Me? But… I don't know if I'm the right person for this. I'm not perfect. I've made many mistakes."
A woman standing beside the mayor stepped forward, her expression warm. "You've proven yourself to be more than capable, Melissa. You didn't just repair what was broken; you gave people hope again.
You've shown everyone that your actions define who you are and not your birth. That's what we need. And we believe in you."
Melissa hesitated, overwhelmed by the weight of their trust. She glanced at Izuku, who stood in the background, watching with an encouraging smile. His eyes told her everything she needed to know—she was ready for this.
Taking a deep breath, Melissa nodded. "If this is what the people want, I'll do it. I'll make sure this island is safe and that no one ever goes through what we did again."
The crowd erupted into applause, and for the first time in days, Melissa felt a sense of peace settle over her. A feeling that she was actually forgiven by the people.
She had taken the first step in building something better—not just for herself, but for everyone who called I-Island home.
The applause gradually died down as the mayor stepped forward again, gesturing to Melissa. "There's something we'd like to show you, Melissa," he said with a small smile. "Please, come with us."
The group of leaders surrounded her, gently guiding her toward a building at the center of I-Island, one that Melissa recognized as the administrative headquarters.
As they walked, she caught sight of the people around her—engineers, scientists, families, and children—watching with expressions of gratitude and respect.
They entered the building, and Melissa found herself led to a large, bright room that was lined with sleek furniture and holographic displays.
At the center of the room stood a polished desk, behind which was a massive emblem of I-Island's logo, freshly engraved with a new addition: Regulatory Authority of I-Island.
One of the leaders, a middle-aged woman with a calm demeanor, handed Melissa a silver badge with her name engraved on it. Below her name were the words: Head of the Regulatory Body.
"This," the woman said, "is your office now, Melissa. From this desk, you'll oversee every major decision that affects I-Island. You'll be the final authority on all technological innovations, projects, and financial allocations."
Melissa stared at the badge in her hand, her breath hitching. "I… I don't know if I should be given this much big of a responsibility," she said, her voice trembling. "What if I make a mistake? What if I fail?"
The mayor stepped forward, his expression firm yet kind. "Melissa, no one is perfect. But you've shown us that you're willing to learn, adapt, own up to your mistakes and put the well-being of others above all else. That's what matters. You've already proven you can handle difficult decisions."
Another leader, an elderly man with a kind smile, added, "This island needs someone who understands the consequences of unchecked power. You've lived through it. You know the cost. That makes you the best person for this role."
Melissa looked down at the badge again, her fingers trembling as she traced the letters of her name. "But… What exactly will I be regulating? I need to understand the scope of this work."
The mayor nodded. "Of course. Let me explain." He gestured to a holographic display, which lit up with various categories.
"You'll oversee three main areas: technology, projects, and finances.
1. Technology: No new technology will leave I-Island without your direct approval. You'll review everything to ensure it's safe, ethical, and beneficial to the world.
2. Future Projects: Any new project—whether it's research, construction, or innovation—will require your consent before it begins. You'll have to look into the papers and details of all the projects that come for your approval and you'll have the authority to halt or approve anything based on its potential impact.
Any project started without your approval would be considered illegal whether it was made with good intentions or not.
3. Finances: No funding will be allocated to any project without your signature. This ensures that resources are used responsibly and for the greater good of the island and its people."
Melissa's eyes widened as she took it all in. "That's… a lot of responsibility," she murmured.
The woman who had given her the badge spoke again. "It is, but you won't be alone. We'll assemble a team of honest experts to support you—engineers, scientists, economists.
They'll help you analyze and evaluate everything, ensuring you aren't overburdened. But the final decision will always rest with you."
Melissa's grip on the badge tightened as she looked at the group of leaders. "And you're all sure about this? You trust me to make these decisions?"
The elderly man smiled warmly. "We trust you, Melissa. You've earned it rightfully."
The mayor stepped closer, his voice soft but firm. "Melissa, this isn't just about regulating technology or managing finances. It's about rebuilding trust. You've shown us that you care deeply for the people of this island. That's why you're the right person for this role."
Melissa swallowed hard, tears brimming in her eyes. "Thank you," she whispered. "I promise I'll do my best. I won't let you down."
The group applauded again, and the mayor gestured toward the desk. "Why don't you take a seat? This is your office now."
Melissa hesitated for a moment before walking over to the desk. She placed the badge carefully on her chest and sat down in the chair. As she looked around the room, a sense of purpose settled over her.
As Melissa sat there, the weight of the responsibility felt heavy, but it was balanced by the support of those around her.
As she walked back to her home that evening, Izuku joined her, his voice soft. "You've done amazing, Melissa," he said. "Your dad's actions don't define you now. What you've done here, that's who you are."
Melissa smiled up at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Thank you, Izuku. I couldn't have done any of this without you."
He placed a hand on her shoulder, his expression full of pride. "You did this, Melissa. You gave these people closure and hope. And now, you're going to make sure this island has a brighter future. I'm proud of you."
Melissa leaned into his side as they walked. For the first time, the heavy weight on her heart felt lighter.
