"I can smell people's scent," Adeline said.
Caesar blinked.
"It used to be just you, but now I can weirdly perceive people's scent—wait no pheromones. That's what you call it, right?"
He couldn't respond.
Her face fell. "I can smell it on Nikolai and even Roman and it's all distinct. Not the same at all. The only person I don't smell a thing from is Yuri. Do you know what is going on, Caesar?"
She stared hard at him, hoping for an explanation, that he'd know what the problem was.
Caesar gazed at her.
The look on her face. Was she scared…? If he told her that she was barely human now—that he was the cause of it, would she hate him for it? And even if she didn't, would she be angry?
Instead of explaining, he grabbed and pulled her into the deepest of hugs, saying, "I don't think it's anything much. It's probably just your body reacting to the pregnancy. I mean…I'm not human."
"You think so?" she asked, resting her head against his shoulder.
