Chapter 99 - Chapter 99

Ethan's meeting with Dumbledore did not take long, but still, by the time he was done, curfew had already passed.

He had been given a written permission by Dumbledore, so Ethan would not risk getting punished if caught at this hour, but the same could not be said for other students, meaning Ethan would not run into anyone, giving him the opportunity to do something he had wanted to do for quite a while.

Taking a look at the second floor girl's bathroom.

Ethan never had the opportunity to take a look because he could not go there in the day for obvious reasons, and sneaking out during the night was very hard when one did not have an invisibility cloak.

Since there had been no hints of the Chamber of Secrets being opened, Ethan considered that it was not worth the risks. Now was the perfect opportunity though.

As expected, Ethan did not cross a single person as he made his way to the second floor girls' bathroom.

Ethan did not exactly remember where the entrance to the chamber was, or it was supposed to be opened, but he had the means to find it quickly.

A blue slit appeared on Ethan's glabella, before it opened it reveal a magical third eye. This was the spell Bill Weasley had gifted Ethan, the Third Eye of Destruction.

The Third Eye of Destruction was capable of showing many things, making it an extremely versatile spell. It could detect traces of magic, see through illusions and, as a Divination Spell, show clues.

Ethan looked around the bathroom, and walked to the largest concentration of magic. It was within one of the stalls. As he approached it however, he saw it move.

Alerted, Ethan took out his wand, before opening the stall.

"You found me!"

An ethereal figure threw itself at Ethan, and he did not have to dodge as it passed right through him. Breathing out, Ethan calmed down and deactivated the Third Eye of Destruction, before turning around to look at the ghost.

"Myrtle, I presume?"

The ghost was a squat little girl with glasses a little too large for her size and a few pimples. She was dressed in student robes, Ravenclaw ones.

The ethereal girl looked at Ethan with a teasing smile as she sung, "Grindelwald, Grindelwald, he leaves them all heartscald!"

Fixing his hair, Ethan looked toward the sinks, which had the second strongest concentration of residual magic. Reactivating his Third Eye of Destruction for a second, he approached the sink that was emitting the residual magic and asked, "Have you seen anyone recently?"

Myrtle, or more commonly known as Moaning Myrtle, followed along as she snickered, "Students have been coming to my bathroom for decades to do all kind of things."

Ethan smiled, easily guessing what Myrtle was talking about. And he knew that it was not just that. Everyone knew about Moaning Myrtle at school, who made this bathroom unusable. The lack of people also made it a prime location for any sort of mischief.

Still, it did not cost him anything to try.

"I meant someone alone. Or someone that used this particular sink. Or anything out of the ordinary, really."

Ethan bent down to look at the sink emitting magic, and found what he was looking for. It was the engraving of a snake, hidden behind the tap. This was the entrance to the fabled Chamber of Secrets, which could only be opened up through Parseltongue.

That, or circumventing the spell cast on it. But Ethan was not here for this.

Reactivating the Third Eye of Destruction, Ethan looked for any trace of the sink having been opened, and unfortunately, he did find something.

It had long dried, but by focusing intensely on it, long traces of something heavy dragging itself appeared.

Ethan could not tell how old these tracks were, but he seriously doubted they were several decades old, it looked like they dated from a few days ago instead.

Ethan's expression turned grave at the discovery, as that meant his worse fears had been realized.

Oblivious to all of this however, Myrtle said, "Why would I help you?"

Ethan looked at the girl, and saw that she was staring at him expectantly, eager even for some kind of reward.

"This may be related to the thing that killed you. Don't you want to uncover the thing that did it?"

Unfortunately, Myrtle's only response at the mention of her death was to release a banshee-like scream, before diving head first into one of the toilets, completely disappearing.

This made Ethan sigh. He never expected to get much from her, but she could have made things easier.

Now, for all he knew, the Basilisk might already be wandering inside Hogwarts' pipes, looking for its first victim after so many years, only waiting for an order from the holder of the diary to attack.

Ethan tried to look for any more traces in the bathroom, using his Third Eye of Destruction, but too many people had come in for him to find any clues. Maybe if he had known who he was looking for he might have found a clue, but the identity of the possessor of the Horcrux was unknown.

But right as he was about to give up, he heard the door being opened.

Ethan whipped his head around, staring at the door, yet he saw nothing. His Third Eye of Destruction was still opened, yet he still saw nothing.

It was exactly the fact that he did not see anything that alarmed him though. The Third Eye of Destruction was an extremely potent spell, and had that door been opened by magic, he would have seen traces of that magic.

Since he did not, then it could only mean one thing.

Whipping up his wand, Ethan cast a spell.

"Flipendo!"

The red light burst as it hit what seemed to be empty air, but mere air would not have stopped the spell.

A red haired girl suddenly appeared at the end of the room, the spell hitting her and sending her flying. Ethan could not tell how she had been invisible before this, but what his Third Eye of Destruction did catch was the potent source of magic that was the diary in her hands.

"Alarte Ascendare!"

This was one of the second year Charms, and it would shoot up anything it hit into the air. Ethan aimed it at the diary, aiming to take it away from Ginny, but she drew out her own wand, canceling Ethan's spell with a wordless swipe.

She was not done with this though as her eyes turned glassy, and the tip of her wand turned green.

"Avada Kedav-"

Fortunately, before she could finish, Miyuki appeared next to her, her body turning the size of a bear as she slammed into Ginny.

The fragile unprotected body of the girl was sent flying into the wall, knocked unconscious with a single attack.

Meanwhile, Ethan was left with his heart pounding, having almost been faced with the Killing Curse.

It took him several seconds to calm down, as well as Miyuki returning to him, jumping on top of his head as she whispered, "Are you alright?"

Ethan took a second to nod, reassuring her, "Yes, it was just unexpected."

He approached the downed girl, first checking for vital signs. She was pale, unnaturally so, but Ethan guessed that had more to do with the diary than Miyuki's attack.

Speaking of the diary, Ethan looked down at it, hesitant to pick it up. It was a cursed object after all, and while his Mental Magic should be good enough to resist the effects of the Horcrux, it could still be dangerous.

As he was hesitating however, a light so bright it felt like he was looking at the sun burst out from the book, momentarily blinding both Ethan and Miyuki.

A hint of panic surged within Ethan as he thought he was being attacked, perhaps cursed by the book, so he instantly activated his Third Eye of Destruction.

Using the Third Eye of Destruction while being blinded made for quite the strange sight, but the Horcrux was such a strong source of magic that Ethan could easily follow it.

And contrary to his fears, the diary did not attack him. Instead, it sent itself flying out of the room, and before Ethan could do anything, it flew over the railing, falling to the bottom of the Grand Staircase.
