Once everything had settled.
The entire aircraft carrier fleet had been reduced to ruins drifting on the ocean's surface.
Amidst the eerie and misty expanse of sea and sky, only the sound of waves remained, filling the dead silence.
The lower half of the aircraft carrier remained intact—the recent energy surge had not affected the nuclear reactor. The command center and machinery bay were still structurally sound, but the upper deck had been completely twisted beyond recognition.
The once-solid metal bulkheads had been transformed into noodle-like strands by some unknown energy. These elongated strips, seemingly weightless, floated in the wind, extending like writhing tendrils all the way to the stern of the aircraft carrier.
The fighter jets on the hangar deck were unrecognizable—only the aircraft restraints served as proof that these massive, filament-like wisps had once been solid machines of war.
Looking into the distance, Alex could clearly see the ship's outer hull distorting and splitting apart. However, on the far side of the superstructure, a patch of paint still revealed an English name—Essex.
Alex pulled his black trench coat over Petra's bare body and frowned slightly.
Essex—both a surname and the name of a corporation. Just like Stark Industries, seeing that name alone was enough for Alex to determine the entity behind it. This must be an organization founded by Mister Sinister.
Mister Sinister—real name Nathaniel Essex—was a brilliant yet radical geneticist from London. He was particularly obsessed with mutants, believing that their existence marked a breakthrough in human evolution.
In the comics, Mister Sinister caught the attention of Apocalypse, who altered his genes, granting him immortality and transforming him into a being that transcended humanity.
From that point on, Mister Sinister experimented on himself, seeking even greater power. He also conducted experiments on other mutants, attempting to control and replicate their abilities.
Judging by the current situation, it seemed that this mad scientist had finally fulfilled his "vision."
"Mm..."
At that moment, Petra let out a faint, unconscious murmur.
Hearing the noise, Alex turned his head silently. Seeing that Petra was showing signs of waking up, he pushed aside the chaotic thoughts in his mind.
Her eyes fluttered open, gazing at the dim, gray sky. Petra felt as if her mind was completely blank.
"Don't move. Your soul hasn't fully adapted to this new body."
Watching her attempt to sit up, Alex spoke in a calm tone.
Hearing his voice, Petra suddenly realized she wasn't alone. She shifted her gaze toward Alex.
The moment her eyes landed on his face, a sharp, agonizing pain suddenly stabbed through her head. It was as if countless needles were piercing her skull, nearly causing her to lose consciousness again.
"You... it's you..."
Barely suppressing her shock, Petra gritted her teeth through the pain and stared at Alex in disbelief.
"I... I'm not dead?"
Whether that was a blessing or a curse remained unclear, but the pain, unbearable as it was, undeniably proved that she was still alive.
"Don't get too excited. Your soul has suffered severe damage. I did my best to restore your body, but if your mind remains unstable, your soul could lose control, leaving you in a vegetative state."
Alex's voice was steady, making no mention of how he had brought her back to life.
Petra's mind was still in turmoil. She glanced at Alex with confusion, but as she recalled her vague memories of him, her initial fear began to fade.
She then looked around her surroundings. The moment her eyes took in the eerie scene, she froze in place.
"What... happened here?"
Alex didn't even need to ask what she was referring to.
A floating mass of destruction—a once-mighty aircraft carrier, the pinnacle of human technological achievement, now twisted into something utterly unnatural. Anyone would be dumbfounded by such a sight.
However, Alex had no intention of explaining the full sequence of events. What mattered to him now was uncovering the truth about this world—what had happened here, and where that strange power had come from.
After a brief pause, Alex fixed his gaze on Petra and asked,
"Forget all that for now. I want to know—what exactly happened to this world? Since you're an X-Men member, why were you turned into a Sentinel? And where are Professor X and Magneto? What happened to the rest of the X-Men?"
The moment he mentioned this, Petra's face darkened. She forced herself to sit up, pulling Alex's coat more tightly around her.
"This world... is already finished."
Alex exchanged a glance with Miss Minutes, neither of them speaking, waiting for Petra to continue.
She let out a deep sigh and began.
"From the moment mutants first appeared, the divide between our two species was inevitable. Professor X devoted his entire life to fostering coexistence, founding the X-Men as a bridge for communication between mutants and humanity.
But there were too many ambitious people among humans—those who saw mutant powers as a resource to be harvested, a means to seize control of the world.
For decades, the horrific experiments on our kind never ceased. No matter how hard the Professor and the X-Men fought to stop them, they could never fully eradicate these atrocities.
Mutants were constantly dying in laboratories, and that finally pushed Magneto, the leader of Brotherhood of Mutants, over the edge. He waged war against humanity, declaring that mutants would become the dominant species on Earth."
Alex nodded silently.
So far, nothing about this was surprising. This was the typical state of affairs for mutants. The actions of both mutant leaders were consistent with their established ideologies.
In the Marvel multiverse, mutants were universally despised.
Even though countless humans possessed superpowers, they still harbored extreme hatred toward mutants—hatred so deep that it could never be reconciled.
No matter which universe mutants existed in, a devastating war was always inevitable. There was no escaping it, no negotiating a peaceful resolution.
Even in the relatively stable Prime Universe, the X-Men had been forced to relocate multiple times—first from New York to a desert, then to an island, and eventually to the Limbo Dimension, where they were pushed to the very edge of existence.
From this, it's clear that the fate of mutants has been tragic since their very inception, and this holds true in every universe.
Petra continued speaking. "To stop Magneto, Professor X chose to ally with humans, just as he had done before. But this time, things took a different turn.
Ever since Professor X entered the Capitol building, he never came out again—not even Cyclops, who accompanied him. At the time, the X-Men were engaged in battle with Magneto's Brotherhood and couldn't spare anyone to investigate.
By the time we realized something was wrong, the Sentinel extermination had already begun.
No one knew where the Sentinels had come from, nor how long the humans had been preparing for this. We only knew that they had been waiting for this moment for a long time.
The Sentinels possessed immense power and highly advanced intelligence. The leading Sentinel even had Cyclops' abilities.
These Sentinels didn't distinguish between friend or foe—or rather, they never considered the X-Men as 'their own.' Taking advantage of the mutants' mutual destruction, the Sentinels caught us completely off guard. We were no match for their assault…"
At this point, Petra clutched her head in pain.
"To cover the retreat of our people, Sway and I stayed behind to hold them off. But you already know how that ended. We were completely overwhelmed and eventually captured by the humans.
It was only then that I realized what they had done. Somehow, they managed to control Professor X. They injected Cyclops and other mutants with a special kind of metal, turning them into living power sources for the Sentinels.
Thanks to this metal, Professor X's telepathic abilities allowed him to control all Sentinels from miles away. Not only that, but he could also sense the locations of mutants, enabling humans to hunt them down across the entire world.
I tried to resist—I really did. But the professor's telepathy was just too…"
"It really is Charles."
Alex had suspected it the moment he realized the Sentinels were being controlled by a psychic force.
In any universe where mutants existed, if you spoke of powerful telepaths, Professor X was always the most formidable. While many mutants had psychic abilities, only Charles had reached the pinnacle of Omega-level telepathy.
If this world's humans had managed to control Charles, it would be a catastrophe for all mutants.
"What about Magneto? He didn't try to intervene?"
As Professor X's closest friend, Alex didn't believe for a second that Magneto would stand idly by.
Sure enough, as soon as Alex finished speaking, Petra lifted her head. "Magneto planned multiple rescue attempts, but against the ever-growing Sentinels, we were simply too weak.
Because Professor X's mental powers were so overwhelming, anyone who got too close to him risked being taken over. That made saving him even more difficult.
Magneto tried to awaken the ancient mutant Apocalypse, hoping he would destroy the Sentinels, while Magneto himself donned his helmet and went alone to rescue Charles.
I was there for that battle. Magneto's attempt failed… and he was seriously injured."
