Chapter 2 - Chapter 7: Exploring the Howlett Manor

As Alex stepped through the grand entrance of the Howlett Manor, he was immediately struck by the towering red pines that surrounded the estate, their ancient trunks reaching up towards the heavens. The property felt like a world unto itself, a primeval forest cradling the impressive three-story manor.

The mottled gate at the entrance bore the marks of the Howlett family's long and storied history, hinting at the wealth and influence that had shaped this remarkable place. Alex's eyes widened as he took in the sheer scale of the manor – a true castle-like structure spanning an estimated 200 to 3,000 square feet.

A spiral staircase in one corner led up to the upper levels, its ornate design a testament to the craftsmanship that had gone into the manor's construction. At the center of the grand foyer stood eight massive pillars, each with a diameter of nearly 1.5 meters, supporting the weight of the building's four load-bearing walls.

As Alex turned his gaze, he was immediately drawn to the imposing bookshelves that lined one side of the room. Row upon row of tomes, numbering in the thousands, filled the shelves, a testament to the Howlett family's scholarly pursuits. Alex couldn't resist the urge to glance over the titles, his curiosity piqued by the wealth of knowledge contained within.

Opposite the bookshelves, Alex noticed a large fireplace, its crackling flames casting a warm glow over the space. In the harsh Alberta winters, he could imagine this hearth as an indispensable source of comfort and warmth for the Howlett household.

Intrigued by the manor's rich history and the promise of discovery that lay within its walls, Alex took a deep breath, eager to explore the secrets and stories that this remarkable place had to offer.

As Alex and his uncle John made their way through the impressive grounds of the Howlett Manor, they were struck by the lush, verdant foliage that surrounded them. The yard was an oasis of vibrant greenery, with low-growing trees and bushes flourishing in the temperate climate.

Meticulously tending to this natural splendor were the manor's gardeners, working in pairs and trios to trim and shape the plants, ensuring the grounds maintained their impeccable beauty. Alex couldn't help but admire their skill and dedication.

Greeting the pair was a stout man with a thick beard, whom John introduced as Thomas, the Head Gardener of the Howlett Manor. Alex was quick to praise the man's craftsmanship, marveling at the pristine condition of the landscaping.

"Thomas," John asked, "is anything noteworthy happening at the manor in the next few days?"

The gardener shook his head, informing John, the owner of Howlett Manor, that the manor didn't have any special happenings or accidents. Satisfied with the response, John turned to Alex and arranged for him to be shown to a comfortable room where he could rest and refresh himself.

As the two men ascended the stairs to the second floor, John made a point to call for Mary, the manor's housekeeper, to attend to Alex's needs. "Make sure he has everything he requires," John instructed, "and let me know if there's anything else I can do for him."

With that, John left Alex to settle into his accommodations, eager to explore the manor and the secrets it held within its grand, historic walls.

Despite the comfortable accommodations arranged for him, Alex found himself surprisingly energized rather than tired. After all, this was his first time venturing beyond the confines of the Walter estate, and he was eager to familiarize himself with his new surroundings.

As Alex settled into his room, his guard Arnold occupied the adjacent room, always staying close to provide protection. Additionally, three entourage members were arranged to reside in small huts scattered around the manor grounds. In this era, an entourage served a role akin to that of a security detail in the 21st century.

Alex's room was sumptuously appointed, featuring a grand bed positioned beneath a large window. Across from the bed stood a substantial desk, upon which the warm sunshine streamed, enveloping Alex in a sense of comfort and ease.

As he sat down at the desk, Alex's mind began to race. He realized that he needed to find reliable allies, for he was not Martha's biological son. This fact left him feeling a little embarrassed, especially after Luis had married Martha. The birth of his half-brother set them against each other in the years to come as they vied for the Walter family's inheritance.

Alex knew that he would need to tread carefully, for he likely had little chance of gaining the upper hand in such a scenario. Determined to navigate this delicate situation, he resolved to observe and gather information, hoping to uncover allies in Howlett Manor who could help him secure his place within the Walter Walter family.

With a deep breath, Alex turned his gaze out the window, taking in the verdant splendor of the Howlett estate, his mind already whirring with plans and strategies to ensure his survival and prosperity in this new, unfamiliar world.

As Alex sat at the desk, his mind raced with the realization that the vast majority of Walter Manor's properties and assets were, in fact, under the management of his stepmother, Martha. Martha, the sole heir of the Martha family, had forged strong partnerships and alliances with the influential Wayne Manor after Walter inherited her family's properties.

Many of the manor's regular business partners were closely tied to the Martha family, further solidifying their dominance. In contrast, the Gray family, to which Alex's late mother belonged, had primarily focused on military endeavors, leading to a decline in their influence and status. This ultimately resulted in Alex's mother, Emma Gray, marrying into the rising Walter family through her union with Luis.

Alex, being still quite young, lacked the experience and knowledge required to navigate the intricate world of business and politics. The skills he had honed thus far were of little use in this new environment, leaving him with a profound sense of crisis.

After mulling over these realizations, Alex decided to venture out of his room and explore the manor further. As he made his way downstairs, he came upon his uncle John engaged in conversation with a young boy seated in a deck chair.

The boy's appearance immediately caught Alex's attention. He was pale and sickly, a complexion all too familiar to Alex, who had experienced such a condition himself over the past eight years. However, with the help of the sacred tree, Alex had slowly begun to regain his health two years ago after it chose him to become the tree guardian.

Intrigued, Alex approached the pair, his curiosity piqued by the boy's delicate state. What secrets did the Howlett Manor hold, and how might this sickly youth be connected to the complex web of power and influence that Alex had begun to unravel?

As Alex approached, his uncle John greeted him warmly, pleased to see that Alex had rested well. Alex then asked if the sickly boy was James, the one John had mentioned at the party. John introduced the young man to Alex, explaining that he was James Howlett, the son of Howlett Manor.

Alex politely addressed James, conveying that his uncle John was quite proud of him. James, speaking in a dry, weary voice, expressed his gratitude for the kind words. However, he then told Alex that he would not be able to play with him. Sensing the delicacy of the situation, John interjected, suggesting that James and Alex simply bask in the sun together for now. He then promised to call Mary to prepare dinner and to remind James to take his medicine later.

Alex nodded, understanding the situation. He settled down next to James, feeling a bit awkward but determined to make the best of it. The sun felt warm on their faces as they sat in comfortable silence for a while. Breaking the ice, Alex asked, "So, James, what do you like to do when you're feeling up to it?"

James turned to him with a weak smile. "I enjoy reading adventure stories. It's like traveling without leaving my room."

Alex's eyes lit up. "That's cool! I love those too. Have you read 'Treasure Island'?"

As they chatted about books, James seemed to perk up a bit. John watched from a distance, pleased to see the boys getting along. Later, as the sun began to set, Mary called them in for dinner. The aroma of freshly baked bread and roast chicken wafted through the air. Alex helped James up, and they slowly made their way inside, their newfound friendship just beginning to bloom.

Alex turned to the frail James, assuring him that his health would improve soon. James simply replied with a quiet "thank you," his tone tinged with a hint of resignation.

As the three of them settled into the garden, Alex couldn't help but wonder about the nature of James' ailment and his apparent reluctance to interact. The Howlett Manor was already proving to be a complex web of relationships and dynamics, and Alex knew he had much to learn if he was to navigate this new world successfully.
