Lan Zhan, who was fighting with Bichen, watched as Wei Ying flew up to the mountainside.
He stopped what he was doing and quickly followed him, calling out, "Wei Ying, no, stop, come back!" Wei Ying looked at him, and Lan Zhan knew what that look meant.
"Please, Wei Ying, come back," he said, his heart pounding.
But Wei Ying just looked at him blankly.
Lan Zhan saw the emptiness in Wei Ying's eyes and knew he had no desire to continue living.
After seeing the sword pierce his Shi Jie's heart and watching her die in front of him, Wei Ying knew everyone wanted to kill him.
He couldn't imagine living in a world without his Shi Jie. Moreover, he was going to die anyway, since he does not have a golden core, as the Stygian Tiger amulet was holding his broken bones together.
Without it, he wouldn't survive, and the greedy cultivators wanted it for themselves.
He decided to give it to them and let them do as they wished.
Wei Ying didn't look at Lan Zhan; he just fell towards the dawn of the hill. Lan Zhan realized what he was about to do and flew up to grab one of his hands, holding on tight.
"Lan Zhan, it's okay, you can let me go now," Wei Ying said with a painful and fake smile on his face.
"No."
Lan Zhan responded strongly, tightening his hold on Wei Ying's hand.
Blood continued to rush from Lan Zhan's wounded hand.
"Wei Ying, please, you don't have to do this. And... please turn into your wolf form and use your wings to fly away. I'll follow you wherever you want to go." Lan Zhan told him with tears in his eyes.
Just then, Jiang Cheng yelled Wei Ying's name, "Wei Wuxian! Just go to hell!" Jiang Cheng struck the stone with his sword, breaking off a part of it.
Wei Ying knew that if he didn't let go of Lan Zhan's hand, they would both fall to the ground...And Wei Ying wasn't ready to take Lan Zhan with him.
He quickly yanked his hand free and fell, looking at Lan Zhan with a smile before closing his eyes.
Lan Zhan, who didn't think twice, quickly summoned Bichen and followed Wei Ying.
He managed to grab Wei Ying's body before they slowly reached the ground, landing before hugging Wei Ying's body tightly.
His heart was pounding.
The ground of the mountain was so dark, Lan Zhan have to used Bichen's light to support Wei Ying, who was unconscious.
He put Wei Ying on his back, turned into his white wolf form with beautiful big wings, and flew up, heading directly to the Burial Mount.
Lan Zhan found a stone and laid Wei Ying's shivering, delirious body on it. Wei Ying, now conscious, muttered incoherently, pleading for Lan Zhan to let him go, to get out, or to leave him alone. Lan Zhan had already returned to his human form.
His concern shifted to how to deal with the fever that had taken over Wei Ying. He removed his outer robe and covered Wei Ying. As he tried to get up, Wei Ying grabbed his hand, struggling to say, "Lan... Zhan..."
Lan Zhan moved closer, leaning his ear to Wei Ying's mouth to hear him clearly.
"Lan... Zhan, take... them with you... our... children... on the bed..." Wei Ying fell unconscious again, leaving Lan Zhan confused.
What was Wei Ying trying to tell him? Lan Zhan stood up, searching for any useful items. That's when he noticed movement on Wei Ying's stone bed.
He moved closer, curious. There were three beautiful infant babies lying and sleeping peacefully with protective bubbles around them. Lan Zhan gazed at them in awe.
He wiped away the bubbles and gently stroked their faces, already falling in love with them. Beside them was a letter, not folded, in Wei Ying's poor calligraphy. Lan Zhan began to read the note:
"Lan Zhan, I am so sorry for everything. When you came to visit me days ago, I had already bathed them 3 months ago and hid them away from you. That's why you didn't see them.
They are our children, and I didn't name them—two boys and a girl. I got pregnant the first time we were intimate when I am in my heat. Please take good care of them. I love you all, and I'm sorry to leave you alone to raise them.
Wei Ying."
Lan Zhan, now in tears, folded the letter and hid it in his robe. He looked at his innocent children and took a deep breath.
Though he didn't want to leave Wei Ying in this state, he had to take their children back to Cloud Recesses. It was impossible to leave them here. He needed to hand them over to his brother or the nursery and then return.
He didn't know where he would take Wei Ying, but he knew he had only a little time left before the cultivators came to the Burial Mound.
Lan Zhan made Wei Ying as comfortable as possible and gathered the children in his arms, his heart heavy and worried about leaving his mate. He mounted Bichen and flew away to his clan with their children sleeping peacefully in his arms.
Lan Zhan was lucky to find his brother, Lan Xichen, at his house, Hanshi. When Lan Xichen saw him, he approached, saying, "Wangji, thank God you are safe and nothing has happened to you. I was so afraid when I saw how you fell behind Wei Childe at that time. Now, where is Wei Childe..." He fell silent when he noticed the children in Lan Zhan's arms.
"Didi, where did you get these three babies?"
"Xiongzhang, they are mine and Wei Ying's children. He gave birth to them a month and a few days ago. I didn't know until today. He left me a letter," Lan Zhan explained, handing the children to Lan Xichen, who looked at him in shock, unable to comprehend what was happening.
Lan Zhan turned to leave.
"Wait, Wangji, where are you going now?"
"To be with Wei Ying. He is there all alone."
Lan Xichen said, "Let me follow you after I take the children to the nursery."
"No, Xiongzhang, just take care of the children," Lan Zhan replied, mounting Bichen and flying away.
Right now, Lan Zhan didn't trust anyone with Wei Ying, not even his own brother.
When he returned to the Burial Mound, Wei Ying was still unconscious. Lan Zhan carried him to the bed and began sending him some energy, thinking about where to take Wei Ying to hide him.
Wei Ying's body began to shake, and blood came out of his mouth and nose. Panicked, Lan Zhan shook him, calling his name.
Lan Zhan saw Wei Ying's body becoming white and pale. He knew what was happening but couldn't accept it—not now, not ever. He couldn't lose his love and mate.
With his wounded hand still bleeding, Lan Zhan hugged Wei Ying's body, sobbing. "Wei Ying, please don't leave me. Our babies need you. I don't know how to raise them alone. You... have... to be... with them."
Wei Ying coughed violently, blood splattering everywhere. Lan Zhan's white clothes were stained with blood. Wei Ying took a deep breath and then stopped moving, his thin body becoming heavier in Lan Zhan's arms.
Lan Zhan quickly stopped crying as he realized Wei Ying's body had stopped moving. He checked his waist for a pulse—nothing. He checked his neck pulse—nothing. He put his ear to Wei Ying's chest—nothing, no heartbeat.
Even though Wei Ying's body was white and pale, it was still warm. But Lan Zhan knew that his love and mate, the father/mother of his children, was no longer alive. Wei Ying was dead for good.
Several minutes passed with Lan Zhan holding Wei Ying's body, doing nothing.
That's when he started to hear the voices of many people approaching, yelling, "Yilling Patriarch, come outside! You will definitely die today, you evil demon! We will kill you harshly and mercilessly.
You Son of a servant, come out and pay for your sins."
Lan Zhan gently laid Wei Ying's body on the bed, then got up and took his sword, Bichen, and went outside. People saw him and fell silent, retreating to look at his condition.
The man standing before them did not look like the great Hangung Jun they knew. This man, sending deadly glares, was scary.
Lan Zhan looked at them with nothing but anger and hatred, saying, "The one you're eager to kill is already dead. Please leave him alone to rest in peace. Leave before I start killing my own people."
Most of the people there were from the Lan clan, with a few from other clans. Among them, a Lan elder spoke, "Lan Wangji, you are a disgrace to our clan, collaborating with the demon."
Lan Zhan just frowned.
Another elder spoke again, "Even if the Yilling Patriarch is dead, we want his body to set an example to the cultivation world.
So stop and let us do what we came here for."
Lan Zhan chuckled.
Surprising many, and said, "That's over my dead body. No one is allowed to lay a finger on my mate's body."
Lan Zhan unleashed Bichen, which vibrated and hummed, answering to its master.
Lan Zhan knew he had to fight all those people to protect his Wei Ying. He would not allow them to take any of Wei Ying's belongings.
Then so be it...
Lan Zhan fought with all his strength, injuring many without killing anyone. The rest flew away in fear.
When he came back inside the mountain, he stared at Wei Ying's stone bed, where he had left the body a moment ago. But Wei Ying's white and pale dead body was gone... vanished into thin air.
