"What did he dare to do??"
Madisyn's voice was sharp, her eyebrows knitted together in fury. Her eyes blazed with a mix of anger and disbelief as she clenched her fists at her sides. She could barely contain the rage boiling within her, the image of him still fresh in her mind—her ex-fiancé, using her father in some pathetic attempt to worm his way back into her life.
But she wasn't surprised. She had come to expect manipulation from him.
"It was nice of him," her father sighed, his voice weary. He leaned back in his armchair, looking as if the weight of the world rested on his shoulders. "I know you're hurt, but he sounded sorry. Maybe he's changed. Maybe he finally understands how important you are to him."
"Dad, stop."
Her voice dropped, the anger replaced by an edge of discomfort. A flicker of uncertainty passed over her face, her lips quivering as if she was fighting back the words she didn't want to say. She was torn—should she tell him the truth or let it slide?
