Pain. What was it? Kayla knew it. Felt it. Let it overrule her life. Pain to her was slow, etching, crawling into her skin, stones and needles in her blood but she knew it. It was safe. It was her.
Fear. What was fear? That, Kayla had no idea what it was. The irony. Weren't pain and fear the same? One cannot live without the other? Wasn't that what she had always said? Yet she feared… feared for her life, her safety, her work that took years to build, and most importantly, she feared for Oliver, Louisa, Rory, Blaire, and Evie. She feared for them.
Why? She didn't know but she just had to fear. It was all she had known to do. To take their pain away from them and bear it on her shoulders. It wasn't sustainable but it made sense, in a twisted way.
Her parents had her save Evie, then she became sick herself because the bone-marrow transplant didn't go as well as they thought, so her heart… her tiny heart suffered silently until one day… So she took Evie's pain as hers.
