"Aurelia." Cain noticed that she, too, had left the group and was hiding in a corridor.
Cain approached her with Slowking, patting Aurelia on the shoulder. At the same time, he signaled Slowking to leave a psychic mark on her, just in case.
Aurelia flinched at the touch on her shoulder, quickly turning around with two Pokéballs tightly gripped in her hands.
Seeing it was Cain, she let out a long sigh of relief.
"I thought you had already gone. Why are you back?" Aurelia asked quietly, touching her chest to calm herself.
Cain smirked, a hint of mockery on his face. "Regi and Ren are good actors. Didn't you notice?"
Hearing this, Aurelia gave a bitter smile. "Honestly, no. The murals in the tunnel really caught my attention; this is my first time here. I didn't notice anything odd until I realized you were gone. Then I knew something was wrong and hid to avoid trouble."
Aurelia really had no intention of competing for the treasures in the ruins. More than anything, she wanted to find useful items for her Grass-type Pokémon and take advantage of the island's unexplored resources.
Aurelia was one of Ariana's closest subordinates, but not the only one. The help and benefits she received from Ariana weren't much, and as she advanced in her career, Ariana began assigning increasingly complicated tasks to her and her group.
Coming to Mythical Island was something Aurelia achieved with great effort, leveraging multiple connections.
After the fierce battle between Ariana and Pryce at the Lake of Rage, Ariana was seriously injured, and Aurelia hadn't been able to locate her. This made things much harder for her.
Of course, none of this would be shared with Cain, but Cain had already deduced as much.
After all, he had been present when Ariana was defeated by Pryce.
"Come on, let's keep up with them. If you stay here, you won't gain anything." Cain stepped toward the main corridor.
Aurelia hesitated for a moment but ultimately couldn't resist the temptation and trotted to keep up with him.
Regi and Glacius had claimed to include her and Cain in their circle, but in reality, they were excluding both of them.
This made Aurelia feel a certain camaraderie with Cain.
Moreover, although Cain was somewhat solitary, she found him more reliable than Regi.
Following Cain, Aurelia advanced cautiously and silently.
There was something else, something she hadn't even realized herself: a subconscious reaction, an instinctive decision.
Deep down, Aurelia considered Cain much weaker than Regi. Therefore, by cooperating with Cain, she believed she would have more autonomy.
At the very least, she would have more decision-making power.
Cain, maintaining his distance, followed the marks Gengar had left, advancing gradually.
If only Cain had disappeared, perhaps they wouldn't have cared much. But with Aurelia also gone, it was certain that Regi had noticed.
The two continued down the corridor, and Cain gradually began to notice a faint smell of blood.
It was very subtle. If one wasn't extremely sensitive to the scent of blood, they wouldn't detect it, like Aurelia, who hadn't noticed it yet.
But Cain had. He was highly sensitive to such things.
At a corner in a side passage, he saw a small bloodstain that was almost dry. Judging by its state, it must have been from today, and they had only arrived at the ruins today.
Soon, Cain began connecting the dots.
Regi and Ren were putting on a show to deceive everyone who wasn't close to them. But why? Cain still didn't know.
However, it was clear that they had been to these ruins before—and not just recently. They had cleared out the wild Pokémon from these corridors.
As for the rumors that no one had returned after entering the ruins, those people had likely been killed by Regi and Ren or defeated by wild Pokémon while trying to advance.
Cain leaned more toward the first option: the two had arrived at the island first and, upon finding the ruins' entrance, teamed up to explore them with others.
They discovered many wild Pokémon, but they weren't strong enough. However, for security reasons, they decided to eliminate anyone who wasn't entirely trustworthy.
Before encountering Cain, Regi had arrived first, with Ren following just minutes later. It was evident the two had planned this and wanted to gather Cain and everyone else drawn by the commotion.
No wonder Ren said that few people remained on the island.
The group had started with over thirty people, but now, with only fifteen, Ren stated this so confidently.
While Mythical Island was dangerous, for a group accustomed to survival in the wild, even if they couldn't defeat wild Pokémon, they had enough resources to survive.
Some might have fallen to wild Pokémon, but not this many.
So there was only one answer: the deaths of these people were related to Ren and Regi.
Upon finding the bloodstain, Aurelia's expression darkened slightly, and she continued following Cain.
She wanted to see what Regi and the others were planning.
It seemed they had reached the end of the corridor. Gengar, hidden in the shadows, returned and appeared before Cain.
Turning his back to Aurelia, Cain established a telepathic connection with Gengar to understand the situation.
At the end of the underground tunnel was a wall—a large, sturdy wall blocking everyone's path.
Regi and Ren had proposed that everyone summon their Pokémon and attack the wall.
They hoped that by working together, they could break through the barrier.
After everyone had summoned their Pokémon, Gengar feared being discovered and chose to return rather than continue observing.
Hearing Gengar's description, Cain's face darkened.
The bloodstain and the disappearance of people upon entering the ruins gave Cain enough material to theorize.
Slowing his pace, Cain crept toward the door Gengar had mentioned.
As if confirming Cain's suspicions, the scent of blood in the air grew stronger. Now, the concentration was such that both Aurelia and Cain noticed it simultaneously.
They exchanged glances, seeing the gravity of the situation in each other's eyes.
Aurelia thought Cain wasn't very strong and that if they collaborated, she would have more influence in decisions.
But Cain also had his own plans to use her.
Although both had been recruited by Regi, Cain had noticed that, like him, Aurelia was merely being used.
And the fact that she had detected the anomalies early showed she wasn't foolish.
Hopefully, she wouldn't become a burden later.
Cain and Aurelia quickened their pace.
They began to hear the sounds of a battle in the distance.
