The male doctor finished speaking and looked at Selina smugly.
"Dr. Butler, what are you talking about?" a nurse said with a hand over her mouth, giggling. "Mr. Reid doesn't have time to take Mrs. Reid's calls right now."
"Mr. Reid's busy looking after Miss Angelica. He doesn't have time to deal with people who don't matter."
Dr. Butler put on a falsely generous smile. "Now, now, that's not the right way to say it. Who knows? Mrs. Reid came all the way here in the middle of the night. If she leaves without even seeing Mr. Reid, won't that look bad? We should at least give her a chance."
Then, with a rehearsed, fake-kindness expression, he added, "Mrs. Reid, don't mind what she said. Even if Mr. Reid is focused on Miss Angelica, I'm sure he'd still take a minute to answer your call. Miss Angelica may be important, but you are Mrs. Reid."
"Who knows? Maybe you still hold a special place in his heart."
