Sector 5 was estimated to be around 3,200 kilometers from west to east, about equivalent to the distance between London to Moscow in terms of raw distance. Since the safe zone base was located smack dab in the center of each interconnected sector, they only had to travel half the distance to get out of Sector 5 and enter Sector 13 to the east.
Even a normal passenger plane like a Boeing would take 3 and a half hours to travel 3200 kilometers at cruise speed, much less half of that. For the Normandy was was superior to even the fastest plane, it naturally took a short time to get to the border between zones.
At the edge of the border between zones was a white curtain that rose all the way into the sky. Because of it, you couldn't see what was on the other side, so entering new zones was always a risk since you would usually be susceptible to the new rule the moment you crossed over without even knowing what it was.
Well, that was a thing if the past anyway.
