"Don't worry. After our initial recon, we confirmed that the Demon Faction is positioned on the opposite side of the coast. The river below—especially the seabed—is full of corpses. Over time, they've accumulated an extremely corrosive energy residue. If the demons try to cross, they'll have to fly low. If they fly too high, the gaseous emissions will enter their bodies and cause severe internal damage."
Brice spoke each word with a heavy tone, no hint of jest in his expression.
"I get what you're saying, but they probably have shielding tech too, right?" Finn replied seriously.
He knew very well—even the Angels had their own energy shields. It was impossible the demons didn't have similar protective measures. That kind of tactical oversight didn't exist in this war.
"Correct. Which is why we have to descend before we get too close. If we stay airborne too long, we risk detection."
Brice's tone was grave.
"Understood," Finn replied.
He and Stephen exchanged a look and nodded simultaneously.
They immediately concealed their energy signatures and moved toward the shoreline.
"So this is the Demon Faction's habitat?"
Finn scanned the surroundings, frowning deeply.
"Yeah," Brice said, confirming. He pointed at the dark water beneath them. "This river is filled with the bones of the races they've wiped out."
Following his finger, Finn and Stephen looked down at the seething, murky water. Their faces darkened.
Hiss—
Stephen sucked in a breath. "There must be a million corpses down there."
"Roughly, yeah," Brice replied. "Some are human, some are monsters, and some... are demons."
"Damn it," Stephen growled. "How many lives have these bastards taken?"
His voice cracked with anger, but after a second, he sighed bitterly.
"Good thing this isn't another Earth. If it were, the humans in this area would've been extinct already."
"Either way, we're wasting time," Finn interrupted, forcing himself to focus. "Let's gather recon."
"Agreed."
Finn inhaled deeply and then added, "Brice, you and Stephen take the east and circle around. I'll move in solo. Don't worry, I'll be fine."
Without waiting for a response, he leapt forward, vanishing into the dense forest.
Brice and Stephen glanced at each other, nodded, then peeled off in different directions.
Given the mission's danger level, splitting up was probably their best strategy.
Finn maneuvered silently through the dense, alien trees. It wasn't long before he spotted a small village nestled in a valley. His guess had been right—this was a Demon Faction outpost.
"This is it, huh? Their gathering point."
He crouched on a high branch, surveying the layout.
The village was cloaked in a strange energy field, and sure enough, several demons—low to mid-tier—could be seen patrolling or wandering the streets.
A smirk formed at the corner of his mouth.
He extended his right hand. A pale blue flame flickered into existence on his fingertip.
Whoosh!
The flame surged forward like a guided missile, crossing the field with deadly intent.
Fzzzt!
The moment it touched the edge of the village, the flames erupted, causing multiple chain reactions. Explosions burst through the area.
Within seconds, the demons were on high alert.
"What the hell just happened?!"
"How did this fire start?!"
"Check the perimeter! Was it a monster or an intruder?!"
Commanding demons barked orders, sending weaker ones scattering.
From their perspective, every subordinate was a tool. And with an unfamiliar energy source ripping through their village, their paranoia spiked.
"Sweep the area! I want every direction covered!"
"This wasn't spontaneous combustion. Something or someone is out there."
"Stay alert! No one slacks off or we'll all burn!"
While those demons scrambled, Finn watched calmly from a nearby rock formation.
He noted more than a dozen mid-level demons and at least fifty low-level ones. His flames had only damaged part of the village, but it was enough to stir chaos.
Meanwhile, inside the village—
A burly demon guard sat perched on a fortress wall. He looked like a cross between a Kree warlord and something out of Hela's underworld. Holding a massive spear, he stared coldly into the distance.
Suddenly, he rose.
With one swing, he hurled the spear.
BOOM!
The weapon struck the ground outside the village with seismic force, launching waves of dust and cracking the terrain.
"ROAR!"
A monster bolted toward the town, howling, its deformed body glistening with a grotesque sheen.
The burly demon stepped forward. Without a word, he clenched his fist and struck.
CRASH!
The impact flung the creature backward. It hit the ground hard, yelping.
Its form shrank rapidly—what had been a monstrous entity now lay as a common, mangled wild dog.
Clearly, its physical defenses had been destroyed.
The demon warrior snorted. Disappointment flickered in his eyes.
"Trash," he muttered. "How could this level of filth threaten me?"
He turned without another glance and resumed his post.
His duty wasn't to play executioner—his task was to protect the village.
And despite its modest size, this stronghold held serious strategic value.
At the same time—
Finn crept closer, concealed behind a rocky bluff. He stayed low, assessing the situation.
"Looks like we lucked out," he murmured, eyes narrowing.
He watched as demons scrambled in all directions.
Then—
A higher-tier demon emerged, its body marked with strange sigils that pulsed like arc reactor circuitry. Its voice was commanding, sharp.
"No room for error. I want a full perimeter sweep. No excuse. No oversight."
The others straightened immediately.
"Sir!"
"We don't know what we're up against," the demon growled. "That energy blast didn't just come from the sky—it carried condensed matter. Arc-level particles. We've seen similar in previous incursions."
His eyes narrowed.
"Check for cloaked enemies. Look for energy displacement. Check the subspace tunnels. I don't care what it takes—find the intruder."
The subordinate demons responded with renewed urgency. They knew what would happen if they failed..
