Chapter 161 - Chapter 160: Echoes of Betrayal

Chapter 160: Echoes of Betrayal

The Revenant drifted through the aftermath of the destroyed Syndicate fleet, its sensors sweeping for any remaining threats. Jagged fragments of twisted metal and shattered hulls spun aimlessly through space, floating like cosmic wreckage in the void. The flickering embers of destroyed warships illuminated the dark expanse, the echoes of the battle still fresh.

Raizen stood silently on the observation deck, the stars reflecting in his golden eyes. The cold void outside mirrored the growing weight inside him—every victory came with its toll. His gloved hands tightened into fists as he watched debris spiral out, a stark reminder of the lives lost and the war yet to come.

Liana's voice crackled over the comms. "Scans clear. No survivors. Not even escape pods."

Raizen didn't respond immediately. His gaze lingered on the debris field, the weight of the war settling heavily on his shoulders. Finally, he spoke. "Bring us to the nearest outpost. We need to regroup before they hit us again."

Selara stepped onto the deck, her armor still scorched from the recent battle, her expression grim. "The Syndicate's bleeding, Raizen. But they're not dead. They'll retaliate—hard."

"They will," Raizen agreed, "but this time, we'll be ready."

Her gaze drifted to the wreckage. "They're not used to losing. That makes them dangerous."

Raizen's jaw tightened. "Good. I want them desperate."

A Whisper in the Dark

Hours later, deep within the war room, Nyx hunched over the holo-console, the soft hum of the interface filling the tense air. Streams of corrupted data scrolled across the holographic display, shimmering blue code flickering erratically. Her fingers danced over the keys, slicing through layers of encryption as she isolated a fragment of a corrupted data stream retrieved from the captured cruiser.

"There's something here," she muttered, her brows furrowed in concentration.

Raizen approached, his interest piqued. "What is it?"

Nyx hesitated, the weight of the discovery heavy in her voice. "Encrypted logs. Syndicate command-level transmissions. But there's more—there's mention of a traitor."

Raizen's jaw tightened. "Within their ranks?"

Nyx shook her head. "No. Within ours."

The revelation sent a ripple of tension through the room. A heavy silence followed, thick with suspicion.

Selara narrowed her eyes, her hand drifting to the hilt of her blade. "You're saying someone's been feeding the Syndicate information?"

Nyx nodded grimly. "And they're still on this ship."

Raizen's mind raced. The recent ambushes, the near-perfect timing of the Syndicate's responses—everything suddenly made sense.

"Lock down the ship," Raizen ordered. "No one leaves until we find them."

The room erupted into motion as security protocols activated.

The Hunt Begins

Red emergency lights cast the corridors in an eerie glow as security teams spread through the Revenant, systematically searching quarters, data terminals, and engineering bays. The ship felt smaller now, claustrophobic under the weight of suspicion. Tension thickened the air, every crewmember acutely aware that a traitor walked among them.

Raizen led the primary search team, his golden eyes scanning the faces of his crew with sharp scrutiny. Every whisper, every sidelong glance was met with suspicion. He felt the pulse of his Draconic bloodline stirring beneath his skin, heightening his senses, sharpening his instincts.

"Anything?" he asked through comms.

Nyx's voice crackled in his ear. "Found a tampered comm relay near the engineering deck. Traces of recent activity."

Raizen motioned for his team to follow. They moved swiftly through the corridors, boots striking metal floors, the sound echoing in the silent halls as they approached the engineering section.

The lights flickered.

"Trap," Raizen growled just before a concussion blast rocked the corridor, sending the team sprawling. The metal walls warped under the pressure wave, and smoke billowed out, filling the air with the acrid scent of burning wires.

As smoke filled the corridor, a shadow darted through the haze.

"After them!"

Selara surged forward, blades drawn, but the figure was fast—inhumanly fast. She cursed as the shadow twisted down another hall, vanishing into the smoke.

Raizen pushed to his feet, Draconic bloodline surging within him, enhancing his reflexes. He sprinted after the fleeing traitor, the world around him blurring as his speed increased. His heart pounded like a war drum as he pursued the shadow deeper into the ship.

They raced through the labyrinthine corridors until the traitor dove into an auxiliary hangar.

Raizen followed—and cornered them against the bulkhead.

"End of the line," he said, energy blade crackling to life.

The figure turned, helmeted, face obscured. Slowly, they removed the helmet—revealing one of Raizen's senior officers.

"Why?" Raizen demanded, his voice cold.

The officer's eyes were hollow. "You don't know what you're dealing with. The Syndicate… they're nothing compared to what's coming."

Raizen's blade snapped forward, inches from the officer's throat. "Who?"

But the officer only smirked before a hidden device on his chest detonated, disintegrating his body in an instant.

The hangar echoed with silence, the faint smell of scorched metal lingering.

The Warning

Back on the bridge, Raizen stood, arms crossed, as Nyx replayed the traitor's final words.

"There's something bigger at play," Liana murmured, her fingers ghosting over the console.

Raizen's jaw clenched. "Then it's time we found out who it is."

Selara paced behind him, tension radiating from her. "If there's another enemy out there, they're already watching."

Raizen's golden eyes gleamed with resolve. "Good. Let them watch. I'm done playing defense."

The Revenant powered forward into the darkness of space, the war far from over—but Raizen was no longer fighting just the Syndicate.

There was something far worse waiting in the shadows.

And it had just taken notice of him.
