In this way, Lightning Release training was split between Uchiha Kiyo's main body and one of his clones.
Initially, Uchiha Kiyo assumed that this clone, assigned to electromagnetic studies, would be the first to produce concrete results in Lightning Release. It wasn't the other clones nor the main body, who was occupied with many other responsibilities. This clone, dedicated solely to Lightning Release research, seemed the most promising. However, things took an unexpected turn.
It wasn't that the clone's direction was flawed—while one side studied electromagnetism and the other focused on physical reinforcement using lightning, the two methods appeared independent yet interconnected. Still, the unexpected deviation came not from methodology, but from a flawed theoretical assumption concerning Magnet Release.
Something fundamental had gone awry.
Sunagakure.
The clone had just finished the day's research and now strolled through the streets of the Village Hidden in the Sand.
Despite the Land of Wind being over 90% desert, the village was built on a large oasis. Contrary to popular belief, the village wasn't always enveloped in sandstorms or clouds of yellow dust. While they couldn't transform the terrain with large-scale nature control like the legendary Hashirama Senju, Sunagakure's ninja had considerable sand manipulation techniques that maintained ecological balance. Still, compared to Konohagakure, the contrast was stark. What was considered decent here would be average in any Fire Country city.
A few green plants could occasionally be spotted on the streets. These were rare imports, "precious specimens," requiring immense effort from assigned caretakers. Sunagakure, known for its frugality, didn't waste resources—they made the upkeep of these plants D-rank missions. While the rewards were minimal, the assignments served to benefit the village's lower-ranked shinobi. The Third Kazekage himself viewed it as a welfare program.
"Marga! There you are!"
A loud shout disrupted the calm.
The speaker was Rasa, his long-standing rival.
Ever since Marga had outperformed him during a comparison with their mutual peer, the grudge had taken root. Rasa constantly sought chances to challenge him. Thankfully, Marga's growth had been rapid, and his talent exceptional. Had he been any slower, Rasa would've turned his life upside down.
Strangely enough, Rasa had been absent lately. Marga was unaware that the last time Rasa had sensed hostility from him—completely unintentional—he'd hidden in his teacher's residence for a whole month before daring to re-emerge.
Now that everything seemed calm, Rasa felt confident again. After stewing for a month, he was ready to unleash his pent-up frustration—and Marga was the perfect outlet.
During that month, Rasa hadn't merely hid. He refined his control over the "Magnet Release: Gold Dust" and developed several new techniques.
"Marga, to the arena!"
It was a familiar scene. Marga, well-used to such confrontations, didn't protest and followed. A few idle Sunagakure ninjas trailed behind, curious as always.
"Lord Rasa and Marga again?"
"Yeah. It's been like this several times. Lord Marga usually wins."
"What? Last time Lord Rasa clearly had the upper hand. Marga's tactics are too extreme—he doesn't follow the ninja way."
"Doesn't matter. Ninja battles are won by results, not methods."
These discussions reached Rasa's ears, prompting him to hasten his pace.
Though Marga had claimed several wins, his unorthodox tactics drew criticism. Still, he survived war, hardened by it, and was more adept in real combat. Ninja battles relied on results—techniques were tools. Rasa's losses stung, and hearing them recounted in public only made things worse.
He increased his pace, followed by onlookers whispering freely.
"If you ask me, Lord Rasa is too sensitive. Marga just pointed something out once, and he's been stuck on it ever since…"
Though whispered, Rasa—being a high-level jonin—heard every word. He turned and glared at the speaker, silently promising retribution. The terrified ninja paled. While his life wasn't in danger, a few unpleasant missions or rough training days were surely in store.
Marga paid no mind to the drama. The peanut gallery would always chatter.
At the training arena, the two faced each other and exchanged the customary seal of opposition.
Rasa, the higher-ranked jonin, allowed Marga the first move. Marga didn't hesitate—he had goals to test.
"Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!"
He launched a modified version of the technique. Instead of just a gust, he had embedded wind blades into it, increasing its lethality. He manipulated the flow with one-handed seals—subtle and deceptive.
Rasa smirked inwardly but reacted quickly.
"Let me show you what I've developed!"
"Magnet Release: Gold Dust!"
Sand gathered rapidly. With precise control, he extracted gold dust from the sand, forming a defensive shield that gleamed brightly.
But something felt off.
Realizing the delay in separation would be fatal, he aborted mid-process. Gold dust erupted from his pouch instead, forming a hastily constructed barrier.
Marga's breakthrough didn't collapse on contact—it spiraled, redirected, and enveloped Rasa in a vortex of wind blades.
Though Gold Dust's defense was formidable, Rasa's mastery was still new. Under relentless pressure, cracks appeared.
Ultimately, no harm reached Rasa, but his gold shield shattered under the barrage.
"I'll be taking that," Marga quipped.
Using the swirling currents, he manipulated fallen gold dust into his ninja pouch.
A windfall indeed.
In mere seconds, he collected enough gold to match two months of mission pay.
His eyes twinkled with delight.
"You thief!"
Rasa seethed. A C-rank technique had nearly overwhelmed his defense.
"Sand Waterfall Funeral!"
Gold dust surged from his pouch into a blinding wave, roaring toward Marga.
"Whoa! That's a fortune!"
Marga's eyes widened. Money was flying!
"Body Flicker!"
"Wind Release: Blade of Wind!"
Combining Body Flicker with wind chakra, he evaded mid-air, appearing weightless. The blade in his hand sliced through the dust wave, dispersing it.
Realizing Rasa's fury, Marga stopped looting and teleported again.
Rasa, aware of his shortcomings in controlling Gold Dust, switched tactics.
"Wind Release: Scythe Weasel!"
Marga danced with the wind, seamlessly merging with it. His body, laced with wind chakra, became hard to target.
Rasa's old tricks? Already countered.
With superior agility, rapid chakra recovery, and flawless Body Flicker, Marga whittled Rasa down.
At last, exhausted and embarrassed, Rasa left in silence, not even retrieving his fallen gold.
Marga beamed.
Patting his pouch, he strode away from the arena, surrounded by envious peers.
Even a jonin might not earn that much gold in six months.
Their admiration was real—but so was their helplessness.
His chakra recovery was unnatural. His Body Flicker and taijutsu—fueled by advanced wind affinity—were far beyond their grasp.
Back at his residence, Marga sorted his haul.
Among the collection was a separated cluster—gold dust Rasa had extracted mid-fight, still carrying residual chakra.
"This is the key."
He held the dust in his palm, examining it.
"Rasa's Gold Dust Magnet Release isn't a kekkei genkai. It's just advanced technique manipulation."
He focused on the chakra signatures.
"Hmm… No trace of Lightning Release?"
"Instead, there's Wind and… Earth?"
Earth Release?
So, Gold Dust Magnet Release doesn't require Lightning?
Then what of Shukaku's host, the One-Tail's jinchūriki? Does his Magnet Release also combine Wind and Earth?
Most likely. That would explain why Shukaku never used Lightning techniques. The assumption that magnetism required electricity was flawed.
So his earlier hypothesis had been wrong.
"Shallow thinking."
Magnetism doesn't equate to electricity.
It's not true electromagnetism—it's something else.
There's no real magnetic field.
"It's more like direct manipulation of sand through innate magnetic forces."
"For clarity, I'll call it Sand Release."
Yes—Sand Release.
To distinguish it from the loftier title of Magnet Release.
As for true Magnet Release, it won't be classified as a mere kekkei genkai anymore.
It will be a Kekkei Tōta. A Bloodline Elimination.
Acknowledging his past mistake, Marga shifted his goal.
Even if Sand Release isn't true electromagnetism, it still interacts with magnetic forces.
With effort, Lightning Release could one day be integrated.
Only then would it evolve into a true Magnet Release—worthy of being called Kekkei Tōta.
He had already chosen Lava Release as his next step. Now he had one more.
Two Kekkei Tōta… and counting.
