Adam was genuinely surprised.
Hundreds of years ago, even low-ranking demons, with their superhuman physiques, could pose a problem for him. Without a method to strengthen his body like mages, or any kind of talent to aid him, Adam had always relied on his own skill to defend himself against supernatural forces.
Of course, he had managed to get his hands on some special weapons, but nothing that could significantly increase his power.
That's why, after eliminating the fallen angel so easily, he was shocked at himself. Low-ranking demons weren't that much of a threat because, except for a small boost in power, they weren't that different from humans. But fallen angels? Adam had never thought he would one day be able to kill one with such ease.
Fallen angels were naturally stronger than demons. Even a low-ranking one could take on at least four low-ranking demons and still have the upper hand.
Yet Adam, who until recently was no different from an ordinary human, had managed to overpower a fallen angel at full strength.
This wasn't something to take lightly…
"..." At his counter, messy from the recent battle, Adam diligently prepared tea, his hands moving while his thoughts raced.
But there seemed to be an explanation for this. Ever since he emerged from his seclusion, he had gradually felt himself growing stronger. As the days passed, he noticed he was improving at an impressive rate.
His strength had multiplied since then, and his agility had reached the point where he felt like he could float during his morning runs, but that wasn't even the most impressive part.
His reflexes were on a completely new level. When facing the fallen angel, Adam could clearly see its movements, to the point where he didn't even worry about being hit because he knew he could anticipate them.
Whatever had happened to his body, it wasn't just about unlocking his potential. It was enhancing him at an absurd rate…
Of course, he wasn't worried about it or anything like that. In fact, it was great news… Still, it was curious.
Ssshhhiiii
Snapping out of his thoughts when the kettle whistled, Adam removed it from the heat, grabbing two cups as he moved to his living room, where he placed them on the table.
"Sorry for the delay." With a sigh, he sat in one of the chairs, pouring tea into both cups.
"..."
Looking up, Adam saw Koneko nodding at him, the girl sitting in the other chair with an impassive expression as she picked up the cup of hot tea with her small hands.
Adam didn't react to this, simply picking up his own cup and taking a sip.
Koneko… He knew this girl. The demon servant of Rias Gremory, and her rook. A small girl with terrifying physical strength.
It wasn't surprising that he had been discovered, but if Rias hadn't arrived, then it was logical to assume that Koneko had just stumbled upon him by chance. Probably while fulfilling a contract, she had sensed the divine power unleashed by Dohnaseek.
It was a bit frustrating that his presence had been revealed so quickly, a mistake on his part. Having never experienced mana before, he had inadvertently let it leak, allowing the fallen angels to notice him.
Another thing he would have to address, as he didn't want constant trouble at his doorstep.
"So, it seems you sensed the earlier battle, didn't you?" Sighing after taking a sip of tea, he asked.
"Yes… I sensed the presence of a fallen angel and rushed to check it out," Koneko replied, oddly without caution.
"I see. My apologies for that. I ended up being targeted by an attack. Fortunately, I handled the problem."
"I can see that," she murmured, her eyes scanning the black feathers scattered across the floor.
"I'll still need to clean up… Well, anyway, if that's all, then we're done here."
As much as Koneko seemed like a decent girl and didn't appear to have malicious intentions toward him, she was still a demon. Of course, there must be decent demons out there, but Adam's hatred had spanned millennia, so even though he was a different Adam now, it was hard to avoid the irritation whenever the scent of a demon hit his nostrils.
Seeing that Koneko had finished her tea, Adam prepared to take the cups to the sink.
"Wait."
But before he could get up, Koneko suddenly spoke, causing Adam to turn to her in question.
*Sniff
And as he watched her sniff while leaning closer to his body, Adam felt even more confused, wondering what on earth this girl was thinking.
'I'm in a world of madness,' he thought, noticing how she sniffed his shirt for a few more seconds before leaning back with her impassive face, seemingly unbothered by the strange gesture.
"That scent, and this pleasant energy…" she murmured, her face showing a hint of emotion as she seemed curious. "Are you…
A Youkai?"
"...Huh?"
Adam, caught off guard by the question, stared at her in confusion. But seeing how her curious expression remained unchanged, he simply decided to answer honestly.
"No… I've always been human."
"Oh, I see," Koneko blinked, seeming surprised by the answer.
"Why would you think that?" Curious to understand her reasoning, he asked.
"..." But Koneko, faced with the question, fell silent for a few seconds, her eyes wandering over the man's body in front of her. "Your life energy is overflowing, and besides… Your aura is pleasant."
"Oh…" Adam nodded, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.
Youkai were indeed known for their ability to use mystical arts based on chakra. Chakra was essentially life force that circulated through the body, so it wasn't strange that Koneko had mistaken him for one, given that he could feel the life energy coursing wildly through his body.
But realizing the lack of explanation for the earlier strangeness, he turned to Koneko again. "But that doesn't explain why you sniffed me…"
"..." Koneko, who until then had seemed unflappable, surprised Adam when her cheeks took on a crimson hue, her eyes avoiding his. "Your scent is… Nice."
"...?"
He really was in a strange world.
. . .
The next day, as soon as Adam woke up, he immediately began his morning routine.
After saying goodbye to Koneko the previous night, he spent the rest of the evening cleaning the entire house… He also asked the demon girl to dispose of Dohnaseek's body when she left, which she seemed to accept willingly.
The earlier conversation was still fresh in his mind. As a creation of God, Adam had thought that after unlocking his potential, he might somehow become unpleasant to demons, but it seemed to be the complete opposite… He didn't have holy power running through his veins, and he seemed more like a Youkai than a human.
Adam, frying some eggs, turned to see the golden sword of light leaning against the wall, his eyes narrowing.
So how had he been able to "steal" the sword of light? It was still definitely holy power, but now it seemed to contain Adam's essence, allowing him to wield and manipulate it at will.
"Questions and more questions without answers… Sometimes I wish God were still alive just so I could get some clarity." Shaking his head in disappointment, he moved the fried egg to a plate, carrying it to the table and sitting down. "Maybe Michael could help me with this…"
He murmured uneasily. The last thing he wanted was to have the eyes of Heaven on him again. Even with God dead, there were still likely some angels who weren't too fond of God's "failure."
"Still, it was one of the beings of light who started a war against Heaven," he scoffed, beginning to eat. "Maybe the Youkai can help me understand this energy."
Ding! Ding!
With the spoon inches from his mouth, Adam blinked when his doorbell rang, his head turning toward the door. "What's this? A visitor?"
He raised an eyebrow, curious about who it could be. His guess was, without a doubt, Saki. Given her personality, she was probably desperate to find him. It wouldn't be a surprise to find her standing anxiously at his door.
"Well, I shouldn't keep her waiting." Finishing his meal quickly, he placed the plate in the sink before heading to the door.
"..!"
But on his way to the door, Adam froze when that familiar scent hit his nostrils, the scent of a demon that Adam had memorized over millennia.
But, unlike the scent of someone like Koneko, this time the scent seemed stronger, accompanied by the demonic power that seemed to leak through the cracks of the door.
This put Adam on alert, and he immediately summoned the sword of light to his hand, shrinking it until it became a small point of light that fit in his palm.
'Koneko must have reported my presence, but I'd be an idiot not to be wary.'
And, with his instincts on high alert, Adam stopped in front of the door, his hand resting on the doorknob as he slowly opened it.
"You must be the one Koneko mentioned…"
But when the door opened fully, and those long, blood-red hair strands swayed in front of him, Adam couldn't help but be surprised.
"My name is Rias Gremory."
Those two melons hanging from her body swayed forward, her blue eyes emitting a faint glow as a small smile spread across her thin lips.
But while most people would be left speechless by such beauty, Adam, who maintained a stoic expression as he faced the demon girl, could only think one thing at this point.
'Yeah, my peace is about to end.'
