As Lorenzo neared the estate gate, Ashley's phone began to ring. She picked it up tiredly when she saw Elara's name on the screen. Elara and Molita were still at the restaurant, just getting ready to leave.
Ashley thanked them, a wave of guilt washing over her for leaving them to handle things alone all day. But they understood. And she was so grateful for that.
Once inside the house, Lorenzo gently laid Bryan on the couch. His gaze lingered on the boy for a moment before he bent to kiss his hair.
"I'm so sorry for ever leaving you out there alone," he whispered, even though Bryan was fast asleep and couldn't hear him. The police had caught the Gilberts trying to run, and they'd been arrested. Once all of this was over, he'd pay them a visit — one they wouldn't forget.
He rose and turned to Ashley, pulling her into a firm embrace. His chest tightened from how drained and quiet she'd been since they left the station.
