Chapter 68 - Cremation

"What the fuck? Why burn the bodies?" (Mark)

"I thought burning bodies spread airborne diseases." (Justin)

"Yes, and no, it usually would be a quarantined-off area and would be disposed of properly. Unfortunately, though, we don't have the proper equipment, and I doubt any of you want to rummage through the dead bodies to play puzzle pieces with human bodies." (Anna)

Staring at the prospect of the disposal of the dead bodies. The others looked at the pile of corpses that were slimy and rotting. The thought seemed to gag most of them.

"No thanks." (Justin)

Anna's Guardian looked at them and their banter with eyes of intelligence, lifting their hand, all the corpses burst into flames. The flames were white and clear, but they did not release smoke or heat. Anna's eyes widened. The bodies were being broken down like they were in acid, the flesh disappearing and dissolving as bones fell to the bottom, as more of the flesh of other limbs dissolved.

[Your Divine Guardian is using the final vestiges of the magic keeping them here to cast Divine flame.]

[Divine Flame: Divine flame is believed to free the trapped souls of the dead to allow them to ascend to join the divine. It can cure illnesses and dissolve corpses. If the victim of the flame is alive, the flame is ever-curing; if the victim is deceased, their bodies will cease to be. Divine flame cannot be used to kill the living, but is used to release the dead and cure the dying.]

The bodies ceased to be, leaving only bones as Anna's summon slowly broke down into glowing balls of light before ceasing to be there entirely.

[Due to your summoned efforts, they have been unsommoned.]

"What just happened?" (Justin)

"My Divine Guardian summon had... used the magic keeping them here to purify the bodies in a sense." (Anna)

"Well... Shit your summon is powerful." (Kyle)

"We... don't have to worry about bodies now." (Mark)

The smell of rot that permeated the creek was no longer overwhelming as the source was scoured from the lands. Anna stood there, not knowing how to feel, knowing that this should weigh heavier in her mind. So many dead, but what ran through her mind was the fact that this was only the beginning of the deaths from that system.

They had all left in a somber mood, the smell of rot and the fact that nearly all of them felt self-depricating disgust over the fact that they were unwilling to bury the remains of the bodies. Anna had immediately removed the mask from her face and breathed in the smell of rot. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was a weight on her shoulders, a reminder of what caused all of this. When they had returned, all of them were out of it.
