In the blink of an eye, a torrent of fire roared toward Rexan and Lacy. Acting on instinct, Rexan yanked Lacy down, the two of them diving for cover.
The heat was suffocating, the flames licking dangerously close as Rexan dragged Lacy behind the thick trunk of a towering tree.
Peering cautiously through the dense foliage, Rexan felt the oppressive heat radiating from the dragon's fiery breath.
The air crackled with energy, the ground scorched in wide arcs where the fire had hit. If not for the tree shielding them and the sudden darkness cast by the dragon's enormous shadow, they would've been nothing more than charred remains.
Rexan's heart pounded as she glanced at Lacy, whose face was pale with terror. "Stay close," she whispered, her voice steady despite the panic threatening to rise.
