Chapter 106 - Verdict

Daily Meme

 -----

Mom, Eri, Izuku, Nejire, Ryukyu, Mirko, Uraraka, Tsuyu, and a handful of sidekicks I didn't bother remembering all sat together to eat. Plates filled with tempura, rice, miso soup, and whatever else Mom decided to throw on the table. Eri sat between Nejire and Mom, tiny hands gripping her chopsticks.

Nejire kept pointing at different dishes, telling her to try this, that, everything. "Ooo, this one is so good! And this one! Oh, you have to eat this one with soy sauce!"

Eri just stared at her plate, looking overwhelmed.

Mom placed a piece of shrimp tempura on Eri's rice. "You don't have to eat everything at once. Just eat what you like."

Eri nodded, still stiff, but she picked up the shrimp.

Uraraka reached across the table, grabbing some vegetables. "Nejire, let her breathe. She is not a food reviewer."

Nejire pouted. "But food is important! It is fuel for hero work!"

Mirko snorted. "Fuel, huh? That why you are inhaling half the table?"

Nejire gasped dramatically. "I have a high metabolism!"

Mirko leaned back, shoving food in her mouth. "So do I. I don't announce it every five seconds."

Izuku, who had been silently stuffing his face, blinked like he just realized he was also eating at an ungodly speed. He cleared his throat, slowing down.

Tsuyu sipped her tea. "Food is good."

Ryukyu nodded. "It is."

Mom turned to me. "You are eating like you just got out of jail."

I grabbed another piece of tempura. "I almost did."

Mom sighed, rubbing her temple. "I really need a drink."

I nodded toward the kitchen. "Top cabinet. Left side."

Nejire grinned. "Wine pairs well with tempura!"

Mom shot her a look.

The door slid open.

Aizawa walked in. He looked at the food, at the table full of people, then at me. "You."

I swallowed. "Me."

"You are coming with me."

I sighed, dropping my chopsticks. "Yeah, yeah." I stood up, glancing at Eri. "Keep eating."

She nodded slowly, watching me leave. Mom got up following us.

Izuku also stood. "What is going on?"

Aizawa looked at him. "The Commission made their decision."

Silence.

Mom crossed her arms. "What about Eri?"

Aizawa exhaled. "That is part of it."

I followed him out of the room. The others trailed behind, some more hesitant than others.

We walked into one of the smaller conference rooms. Tsuragamae was already inside, leaning against the table. He gave me a look. "Sit."

"Roles are reversed huh?" I grumbled, he stared.

I sat with Mom next to me.

Aizawa stayed standing. Ryukyu and Mirko took seats. Nejire leaned against the wall. Izuku Tsuyu, and Uraraka hovered near the door.

Tsuragamae folded his arms. "The Commission reviewed everything. Your actions. The raid. The public response."

I leaned back. "And?"

"Your license remains active."

I raised a brow. "Just like that?"

Tsuragamae's ears flicked. "Not 'just like that.' It was a debate. You have too much public support to throw out, but you are also a liability. They will be watching you. Closely."

I shrugged. "They can watch all they want."

Mirko grinned. "See? Told you they wouldn't bench you."

Tsuragamae didn't look amused. "You are still a problem. They are not giving you a free pass. Step out of line again, and they won't hesitate."

Aizawa crossed his arms. "That includes working under strict supervision. If you weren't already interning under Ryukyu and Mirko, they would've reassigned you."

Ryukyu shook her head. "No, no. It is not set in stone. You can assign him to another agency."

"Good luck with that," Mirko muttered.

Tsuragamae exhaled. "Now, onto the other matter. Eri."

"What about her?"

"She is not staying in a facility."

Nejire straightened. "Wait, really?"

"Really," Aizawa said. "She needs stability, not another system to get lost in. "Well, Principal convinced Commission that wouldn't be a good idea. The Commission considered a few options. Someone capable of handling her Quirk, someone with experience taking care of kids, and someone who won't make things worse."

I frowned. "Who?"

Aizawa sighed. "Me."

Silence.

Nejire blinked. "You?"

"You don't sound excited," Mirko said.

Aizawa pinched the bridge of his nose. "I don't 'sound' anything."

Mom tilted her head. "Can you handle that?"

Aizawa looked at her. "I already raise a class full of delinquents and future liabilities. One more is not going to end me... probably."

I scoffed. "You sure? You look like you are two bad decisions away from retiring early."

"One more won't change anything."

Nejire grinned. "Ooo, so Eri gets to live with us in the dorms?"

Aizawa sighed like he already regretted everything. "Yeah."

Nejire gasped. "Wait, really?" She turned to me. "She is gonna be living with you!"

I leaned back in my chair. "Sweet. We are basically a family now."

She ignored me, already turning to Ryukyu. "That means we can take her shopping! OH! I am buying her a blanket with bunny ears and a hoodie shaped like a dinosaur and a 32-pack of marshmallows and she is gonna have SO MANY sparkly pens-"

"She needs time to adjust," Aizawa cut in. "She is not a doll you can dress up."

Nejire crossed her arms. "I wasn't gonna make her wear a dress or something. But she is a kid! She should have stuff!"

Mom nodded. "She does need a stable environment. The dorms are a good choice."

Aizawa leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, gaze shifting to Mom. "Mrs. Midoriya, from what I see, she feels safe around you, perhaps because you are Ryuu's mother." He barely gave her time to process that before continuing, "Would you be willing to work for U.A. and take care of Eri?"

Mom blinked. "I-"

Aizawa raised a hand, already anticipating whatever question she was about to ask. "I spoke with Nezu. If you accept, U.A. will provide a home for you inside the campus. You will have a stable place for her, and your sons can visit whenever they want."

The room went quiet.

Mom stared at him, then at me and Izuku. She wasn't the type to get caught off guard easily, but this? Yeah, this had her thrown. Her fingers twitched slightly like she wasn't sure whether to cross her arms or put her hands on her hips.

Nejire's eyes darted between them, looking like she was trying not to bounce in place. "Ohhh, you would be at U.A. all the time! That would be so cool!"

Mirko scoffed. "Better than leaving her with dead-inside Aizawa."

Mom let out a slow breath. "You are saying I would be responsible for her?"

Aizawa nodded. "Along with me and the school. But her daily care would fall under you."

Her lips pressed together. She turned to Eri, who was still sitting at the table, legs dangling slightly off the chair. She wasn't looking our way but her fingers were curled tight around the chopsticks in her lap, knuckles a little pale. She was nervous.

Mom exhaled. "You are sure this is what is best for her?"

"Yes."

She tilted her head slightly, eyes narrowing just a bit. "And this isn't just because she feels safe around me?"

"That is part of it," Aizawa admitted. "But she also needs someone patient. Someone who understands how to handle kids dealing with trauma." His voice didn't change, didn't soften, didn't try to sell her on the idea. Just laid it out as it was. "You raised two sons. And let's be honest, one of them is Ryuu. You know how to care for someone. You are stable. That is more than she's had in a long time."

Mom was quiet.

Izuku shifted slightly, watching her. "Mom…"

She glanced at him. Then at me. Then back at Aizawa. "When will it start if I say yes?"

"You move in as soon as possible. The house would be built immediately. You wouldn't be a teacher, but you would be part of the staff, technically."

Mirko smirked. "Look at that. You get a job and free housing."

Mom sighed, rubbing her temples. "Just when I got rid of my two sons, now they are back."

Izuku blinked, looking genuinely offended. "Mom-"

I walked over, wrapping my arms around her before she could say anything else. "I don't have to sneak out anymore."

Aizawa turned his head. "What did you say?"

I stiffened. "Nothing."

His eyes narrowed, and for a second, I could already hear the lecture forming in his head. Probably something about responsibility, about how rules weren't suggestions, about how-

Mom smacked the back of my head.

Aizawa exhaled like he was already regretting everything.

Izuku shook his head. "You were sneaking out?"

I shot him a look. "I literally saw you jump out of a window last week."

"Yeah, but that was different."

"How?"

He hesitated. "Because-"

Nejire leaned in. "Ooo, I wanna hear this."

Izuku's jaw tightened. "Because it was necessary."

I chuckled. "Late-night date with your childhood crush Bakugo was necessary, of course."

Izuku snapped his head toward me so fast it was a miracle he didn't break something. "What?"

Nejire gasped, practically vibrating where she stood. "Ooh, I definitely need to hear this!"

Mirko, who had been leaning back in her chair with all the patience of a predator waiting for its moment, straightened up. "Hold the fuck up."

Izuku raised both hands. "That's not-"

I cut him off. "Did you hold hands? Did he call you a 'damn nerd' but this time it felt affectionate? Did you whisper 'Kacchan' while he exploded the sky in your honor? Whisper sweet nothings? Oh, wait, let me guess... you watched explosions under the stars and called it romantic."

Nejire grabbed Izuku's arm. "Oh my god, did you?"

Izuku turned to Aizawa, desperate. "Can we get back to the actual discussion?"

Aizawa didn't even look up from the papers he was scanning. "No."

Mom shook her head. "Ryuu, don't tease your brother."

I ignored her. "I just need to know if he bought you dinner first."

Izuku's eye twitched. "I swear, it wasn't-"

Mirko leaned forward, elbows on the table. "So who made the first move?"

Ryukyu let out a breath. "We are not doing this."

"Yes, we are," Mirko shot back.

Izuku ran a hand down his face, already looking exhausted. "It was a patrol."

I hummed. "Yeah, I am sure that is what you told your diary."

Izuku groaned. "I don't even have a diary."

"Right, because you burn all evidence," I said. "Smart."

Aizawa finally looked up, not because he wanted to save Izuku, but because he was clearly tired of the conversation. "We are done."

Mirko grinned. "Are we, though?"

Aizawa pinched the bridge of his nose. "Yes."

Nejire clapped her hands together. "For now."

Izuku slumped back in his chair like he had survived some great battle. Meanwhile, I made a mental note to bring this up again the next time he pissed me off.

Aizawa turned back to Mom. "Is that a yes?"

Mom glanced at Eri, who had gone back to clutching her candy like it was the most important thing in the world. "Yes."

Nejire immediately cheered. "Yay!"

Mom turned to her. "That doesn't mean you can spoil her."

Nejire blinked. "That is exactly what it means."

Mom sighed. "This is going to be a problem."

"You raised Ryuu," Aizawa said, flipping the folder closed. "You will be fine."

"You raised Izuku," I said. "You will be exhausted."

Aizawa was already gathering up the last of the documents. "You will be contacted about the move-in details. Nezu will handle the rest."

Mom nodded. "Alright."

Aizawa glanced at me. "Try not to cause any more issues."

I grinned. "No promises."

Tsuragamae stood up. "Meeting is over."

I turned to him. "Oh right, you were in the room. I totally forgot about you."

Tsuragamae exhaled through his nose like he was holding back every insult that wanted to crawl out of his mouth. Then he sighed, muttering something about being too old for this shit before walking out.
