Skye and the others couldn't help but feel a little nervous in the presence of Joan, the seemingly kind and composed woman standing before them.
The beautiful woman beside Shen He, who appeared almost non-human, was a mystery to them. They knew little about her except that she was part of the core team from Chaldea, a group with immense power brought into their world by Shen He. Joan had a close relationship with Shen He, addressing him with respect as "Master," but beyond that, they had little familiarity.
Even Steve, Coulson, and the others were not well acquainted with them. They had heard of these beings, powerful and mysterious, but their true nature was still unclear.
"Huan, welcome," Skye, ever the outgoing one, stood up first. "Haven't you gotten a uniform yet?"
"I don't need a uniform," Joan replied, shaking her head. Her expression remained indifferent. "I will not participate in your actions directly. My primary purpose is to ensure your safety, prevent you from inadvertently causing harm to civilians, and record your progress."
"So, you're here to supervise?" Skye muttered under her breath, remembering the last meeting where she had been reprimanded by Coulson for her lack of discipline.
Her words did not escape Joan's sharp ears. The comment made her feel a little dejected, but she quickly composed herself. This task was a duty, one she would fulfill with professionalism. After all, it wasn't so different from what she had done in the past when she had been a ruler. She would be a competent referee, just as her master expected.
Shen He, who had been calmly teaching Violet to read, glanced up as if sensing something. He wasn't sure how Joan was fitting in with the others, but he had sent her out for a reason. He wanted his followers to build their own social circles and engage with the world beyond their immediate circle. Being confined to just them could be stifling, especially in a long-lived world. Knowing more people could be valuable.
However, Joan quickly encountered her first challenge: the report she had received from Coulson detailing the incident.
While she had learned English after being summoned to this world, she struggled with the strange symbols on the tablet.
"Why isn't this written in Chinese?" Joan thought to herself, frustrated. Chinese characters are far more logical! Over two hundred characters, and this... this is impossible!
She felt a wave of helplessness rise within her, but she kept it hidden. If anyone found out that she couldn't even understand the report, she'd lose face in front of her lord.
Natasha, ever the sharp-eyed agent, skimmed the report and immediately identified the key point. "This was clearly a set-up," she noted. "Miss Joan, you should be able to pinpoint the suspect's location with ease, right?"
"Is that true?" Skye, Wanda, and the others asked, clearly surprised.
Joan remained stoic. "The Master will show me the way, but I will not interfere," she said coldly. "As I've said before, this task is yours to complete."
"But what if innocent people get hurt?" Skye said, voice laced with concern. "Shouldn't you help us then?"
Joan blinked, seemingly unaware of the dilemma. Perhaps, due to her inability to understand the details of the report, she didn't realize the seriousness of the situation. Or perhaps she simply didn't care.
"If you truly cannot manage, I suppose I will have to deduct points," she added in a matter-of-fact tone. It's not like I'm doing much more than guiding them…
"Why don't you read the full report first?" Coulson suggested, noticing Joan's discomfort. "The suspect's appearance is registered with S.H.I.E.L.D., and we've blocked off a large area. No matter where a fire breaks out within that range, we can be there in the shortest time."
Steve clapped his hands, ready to move forward. "Then let's head out. It's almost dark. Check your gear, know the rules, and be sure to follow the orders."
Joan let out a quiet sigh of relief, handing the tablet back. Pretending to read the information had been more difficult than she anticipated. Perhaps she should have just asked for help from the beginning, but now it was too late to backtrack.
Fortunately, no one had noticed her brief moment of discomfort. Even Wanda, eager for their first mission, seemed oblivious to Joan's inner turmoil. The twins, after all, were still young—no older than sixteen or seventeen.
By the time they arrived in the Manhattan area, night had fallen, and the city was alive with neon lights, the bustling streets alive with energy.
"Shock Girl," Steve called, already adopting his leadership role. "You've trained for this. You can use your ability to jump to the rooftops. We've got a report of a robbery on 13th Street. A gunman's on the loose."
Skye, excited and nervous at the same time, activated her shockwave abilities, sending a powerful pulse into the ground. The recoil launched her into the air, and she landed gracefully on a rooftop.
"I see them," she reported over the comms. "Two vehicles, a car and a truck. Wait, they're shooting at the police. I'm going in."
"Hold up," Steve's voice crackled through the headset. "Don't engage alone. Let's coordinate."
But Skye wasn't waiting. She blasted into the air, streaking towards the fleeing robbers.
Joan, ever vigilant, pulled her hood over her head and leapt into the air. As she did, she pulled out a small notebook and marked a small circle in the corner of the page. She knew her place—she wasn't here to fight, only to guide and observe.
Down below, Skye had already spotted the robbers. She zoomed down, landing right in front of them with no thought of evasion. In her haste, she misjudged her approach and collided with a passing truck, sending it careening off course and crashing into two other cars. The chain reaction blocked the path of the pursuing police, creating a chaotic scene.
"Haha!" The robber laughed maniacally as the confusion spread, unbothered by the damage they'd caused.
Joan, with a swift motion, jumped down to the scene. Her form shimmered as her armor materialized under her robe. She quickly began to help the injured, her hands glowing with green light as she healed those trapped in the wreckage.
Skye, realizing the trouble she had caused, looked around helplessly. But Joan was already at work, unaffected by Skye's earlier blunder. She tore open the wreckage of the truck, pulling out the wounded and using her powers to heal them.
"Can I help?" Skye asked, feeling guilty for her earlier mistake.
Joan remained silent, continuing her work without sparing Skye a glance.
Meanwhile, Steve had intercepted the fleeing robber's vehicle with his shield, while Pietro and Wanda quickly disarmed the gunmen, rendering them neutralized.
"It's Captain America!" someone yelled from the crowd, recognizing Steve immediately.
As the crisis ended, excited pedestrians flooded the scene, some taking photos with their phones. Wanda and Pietro looked around, slightly out of place amidst the cheering crowd.
"Everyone!" Steve called out, standing tall and confident on his motorcycle, shield slung across his back. "Please help with the wounded! We're moving out to the next location. Shockwave Girl, keep up."
Skye gritted her teeth and, feeling a renewed sense of purpose, activated her shockwave abilities again, soaring into the sky, following Steve's lead.
Before long, footage from the event went viral. The virtual reality company responsible for the project released an announcement, detailing the formation of the newly named Guardian Team. This team, led by Captain America himself, would assist the police in fighting crime across the city, alongside Shockwave Girl, Wanda, and Pietro.
The announcement spread like wildfire across the internet, with images of the group in their uniforms and brief descriptions of their abilities. People were quick to praise their heroic actions, with Captain America's fanbase exploding in size overnight.
"This is like a comic book come to life!"
"Captain America is a true hero! I knew he'd always protect us!"
"Can they come to India and fight the Hulk?"
As the virtual reality company monitored the rising buzz, they quickly addressed concerns over the damage caused during the mission. Public relations clarified that they would cover any losses caused by the actions of the Guardian Team.
But the true star of the event was Joan, the mysterious figure in the hood, healing the wounded without fanfare. Her identity was left deliberately vague by the company, sparking curiosity and intrigue across the globe.
With their first official mission behind them, the Guardian Team was now on the radar of the world, their extraordinary abilities opening a new chapter for heroes in the public eye.
