Chapter 64 - The woman

Prisca didn't say a word, she just let me talk.

"I thought I was going to die out there," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. "I really did. There was this one moment, in the water, when everything went still. The cold—I felt it all just... slip away. Like if I let go for even a second, I'd be gone."

"Damn," she muttered softly. "That's serious. That's not just a close call, that's some life flashes before your eyes kind of stuff."

"Yeah," I whispered. "But when we got back... Jake was waiting."

"Oh, boy," Prisca groaned immediately, like she could already see where it was going. "He didn't... please tell me he didn't go full romantic martyr on you."

"He was still holding on to that proposal," I said, my voice quiet now. "Still hoping for a yes."

Prisca let out a long, dramatic whistle. "Yikes. Awkward doesn't even cut it. That's... that's tragic, Sid. Like a slow-motion train wreck you can't stop watching."
