Chapter 89: Cruciatus Curse New Trait - Unending Pain!
Dylan really didn't know about this. Usually, when he researched potion ingredients, he read quite a few books about magical creatures.
But those books didn't talk much about unicorns.
Presumably, it was to prevent too many people from learning about unicorns by reading books, and then, with evil intentions, trying to hunt them.
Regarding this, he would have to ask when he went to Professor Snape's extra tutoring session.
Dylan's gaze turned to the brilliant star on the system panel.
—Pitch black.
"There's still one max-level spell that hasn't been unlocked."
And it was a dark magic spell.
Dylan sighed inwardly.
With a thought, his gaze fell upon that star.
Boom!
Dylan's pupils reflected the stream of data frantically scrolling on the operation panel.
Suddenly, a purplish-black beam of light tore through the ceiling, and countless fragments of celestial bodies burning with eerie blue flames rained down like a storm, eventually transforming into bats.
Seeing such a huge commotion, Dylan thought he had obtained another extremely evil dark magic spell, when the system's notification sound rang.
[Message]: Congratulations on mastering the max-level spell - Bat-Bogey Hex!
Instantly, Dylan saw Quirrell standing in front of him. When he cast this spell, a bat appeared from Quirrell's nose and shot out with a "pop."
Then another one, and another one...
How much snot could he possibly have...
Dylan's lips twitched as he felt the information about this spell flood into his mind.
"Bat-Bogey Hex?"
Dylan paused.
Speaking of this spell, Ginny's face immediately popped into his head.
"I remember Ginny was quite skilled in using spells, right?"
However—
"Can this kind of spell be called dark magic? Hmm... it seems it can indeed."
Dylan knew that, generally speaking, the wizarding world defined dark magic in roughly three levels—Jinx (初级), Hex (高级), and Curse (不可饶恕咒).
Dark Arts Against Defense class allowed learning dark magic, and it was usually Jinxes, such as Tarantallegra, Rictusempra, and Locomotor Mortis.
A classic example was the Jinx Quirrell used against Harry during the Quidditch match—the Jinx.
Its incantation itself was "Jinx."
These spells weren't inherently dark magic, but some were controlled by the Ministry of Magic or were difficult to learn.
Here, dark magic didn't refer to inherently evil magic but rather spells that could cause harm and could be used by evil wizards to injure people.
And advanced dark magic—Hex level—could also be called a curse (恶咒).
Advanced dark magic required higher magical talent, and ordinary wizards found it difficult or even impossible to master Hexes.
Unlike Jinxes, Hexes had high lethality and could also cause injuries that ordinary healing spells couldn't cure.
Such as Fiendfyre, Sectumsempra, Confringo, and... the Bat-Bogey Hex.
Although the Bat-Bogey Hex wouldn't cause much harm to humans, it could kill small animals, including magical creatures.
The use of Hexes was usually strictly controlled by the Ministry of Magic.
If these spells were used to cause harm, the user would be summoned by the Wizengamot, the highest court in the wizarding world.
If used for improper behavior, they would also be sanctioned.
But in the entire wizarding world, only those with true magical talent could learn Hexes—like Dylan~
Many wizards couldn't easily master advanced dark magic; after all, the majority were ordinary.
As for Curse, it referred to true dark magic, which were the Unforgivable Curses.
Dumbledore's statement that he wouldn't use dark magic referred to these spells.
Jinxes and Hexes had counter-curses that could reverse them, but the Unforgivable Curses did not. The damage they caused was irreversible, and there were no counter-curses to stop them.
—These were spells born for killing and existing because of pain.
Using these spells would likely result in being hunted by Dementors and eventually imprisoned in the most terrifying prison—Azkaban.
In fact, the reason the wizarding world used Dementors to hunt down dark wizards who used the Unforgivable Curses was that they would basically have their minds and souls twisted by the Curses.
With a polluted soul, it was difficult to cast the Patronus Charm.
—So Dementors were particularly effective against these individuals.
Of course, there were exceptions to everything.
Just like Harry using the Cruciatus Curse but still being able to cast the Patronus Charm.
That was because, like Snape, their wizarding souls were strong enough, or they had a strong desire, to protect their souls from being violated.
For example, Snape always had Lily's guidance in his heart.
Besides this, there was another extraordinary person, Umbridge.
She was evil enough, but her soul wasn't polluted by the Unforgivable Curses.
—She herself was enthusiastic about pursuing fame and fortune and genuinely felt happy about it.
So she had a Patronus Charm, and it was a cat.
Pure evil was something even the Unforgivable Curses couldn't shake.
Besides these three levels of spells, there were everyday spells—Charms.
Easy to learn, gentle and harmless, they were highly functional and practical, and their frequency of use was usually the highest.
Such as the Levitation Charm, Expelliarmus, Lumos...
Dylan had learned the basics of these spells, and even upon first use, they were at a high level.
—The Head of Ravenclaw, Professor Flitwick, was a Charms teacher.
His mastery of Charms was so extensive that he could defeat enemies using only Charms.
During his private tutoring sessions with Professor Flitwick, Dylan had even heard Professor Flitwick's specific account of how he had won the dueling championship using only Charms.
"If according to the wizarding world's definition, the Bat-Bogey Hex is considered dark magic, but you're the system, how can you follow the same standard as the wizarding world? You didn't even give me any new dark magic. Even if it's not an Unforgivable Curse, it should at least be evil enough."
—Like the dark magic from centuries ago.
"Forget it, Bat-Bogey it is."
Dylan shook his head. Since the system wasn't giving him ancient dark magic, then next school year, after he got the autograph of a certain show-off, he could go to the restricted section of the library to take a look himself.
"But this spell probably won't work on Voldemort, right? He doesn't even have a nose, so how could he have boogers?"
The effect of the Bat-Bogey Hex was to turn a person's boogers into bats.
—But this obviously wouldn't be very effective against Voldemort.
"Finally, there's my spell intensive training task."
Dylan exited the achievement panel and clicked on the little wand icon.
[Message]: You have completed the intensive training task for the Cruciatus Curse!
[Message]: You have unlocked the new trait for the Cruciatus Curse - Unending Pain!
Dylan turned his eyes to the introduction of this trait.
——————
[Unending Pain]:
When you use the Cruciatus Curse, the unfortunate soul struck by your Cruciatus Curse will, in addition to the immediate excruciating pain, have a painful curse left on their body.
Over the following period, the victim will continue to experience periodic pain—angina.
Although the intensity of the pain is slightly less than the initial casting of the curse, it will still severely affect their actions and mental state.
[Note]: One hit, all-day enjoyment~
——————
"This..."
Dylan looked at the introduction of this new trait, his hands itching slightly.
He now wanted to find Quirrell again to try out the skill.
"I wonder if Quirrell will be in so much pain that he dies after taking over fifty Cruciatus Curses from me."
However, he hadn't seen any system achievements pop up yet.
He figured it was unlikely.
"If he doesn't die from the pain, will it still cause continuous pain?"
If it did, then his new trait wouldn't be anything special, would it?
Either way, he could blast the other person's face.
Sleepiness attacked.
Dylan was starting to feel overwhelmed.
"Sleep, sleep."
With a blink, Dylan fell asleep.
...
Until dawn.
Dylan was woken up by Harry and the others again.
"Hey, Dylan, you actually slept in this late again?"
Ron looked at Dylan with a suspicious expression. "Dylan, you didn't sneak out and do something yesterday, did you?"
Dylan looked sincere. "How could I? I wouldn't sneak out. If Filch caught me, I'd be in detention with Malfoy."
"That's true." Ron thought of something and got excited again. "But you don't know, being chased by Filch in the corridors late at night is super thrilling!"
Dylan glared at him. "Then I wish you get caught by him. You'll have even more thrills, maybe you can get chased by Acromantulas or evil Erklings in the Forbidden Forest."
Ron's eyes widened. "No, Dylan! How could you curse me like that?"
"You wouldn't happen to have had some kind of prophecy, would you?"
Dylan rolled his eyes, threw back the covers, and sat up.
"Don't worry, nothing will happen. As long as you don't break school rules, you'll hardly encounter these things."
Harry muttered, "Then we're doomed. Ron breaks school rules almost every day."
Ron glared at Harry again. "Don't talk about me, Harry, you do too!"
Harry chuckled and jogged out of the dormitory. "Hurry up, let's go fill our stomachs!"
Dylan got dressed.
"Scourgify!"
Casting a cleaning charm on himself, Dylan slung his bag over his shoulder and left the dormitory with Neville and Ron.
After class, Hermione dragged Harry and Ron to the library to start revising.
Since Dylan had no homework and wasn't worried about exams at all, he sat beside them reading the book Dark Parasitism Analysis Notes.
This book detailed the magical basis of soul division and parasitism.
Like Voldemort, after experiencing multiple divisions of his soul, he used an ancient and forbidden ritual to parasitize his weakened soul onto Quirrell.
This process involved breaking through the host's mental defenses, including how to exploit the host's psychological weaknesses.
—Such as Quirrell's fascination and fear of dark magic, thereby opening the channel for parasitism.
In addition, the book also introduced the methods of dark parasitism.
Still taking Voldemort as an example, during the parasitism, he first approached Quirrell in an invisible soul state in secret, constantly eroding his thoughts and planting his existence deep within his consciousness.
As the parasitism deepened, Voldemort could begin to control Quirrell's behavior.
At first, it might only occasionally influence his decisions, but later, it could directly take over control of his body.
The book also included illustrations of magical arrays and runes, showing the mysterious symbols used in the parasitic ritual.
Dylan discovered that these symbols had the effect of guiding soul transfer and imprisoning the host's consciousness.
"Very useful stuff, maybe I'll have the opportunity to use it later."
—Of course, he wasn't going to parasitize someone else; that would be too disgusting.
—Being wrapped in a smelly turban on the back of someone's head day and night, you'd be pickled.
Just thinking about it was nauseating.
Probably only a noseless freak like Voldemort could tolerate it.
"The consequences of parasitism..."
Dylan didn't skim through this book; instead, he studied it seriously for several days.
When he reached the latter part, Dylan found that this book really described the act of dark parasitism in great detail.
This allowed him to further understand Quirrell's current state.
Dark parasitism caused immense torment to both the host's body and mind.
For example, Quirrell's original personality was gradually swallowed by Voldemort, and his body also showed abnormalities—Voldemort's face growing on the back of his head was a terrifying manifestation of this parasitism.
And for the surrounding environment and others, the parasite would also bring a dark aura, disrupting the magical balance around it.
Like Hogwarts, during Voldemort's parasitism, strange magical fluctuations often occurred, and students and faculty could feel inexplicable fear.
After spending a few more days, Dylan completely finished reading Dark Parasitism Analysis Notes, and his heart was still shaken.
Not only because the book's description of Voldemort's parasitism of Quirrell was too detailed, making him feel a bit nauseous, but also because it gave him a deeper understanding of the evil and terrifying nature of dark magic.
Furthermore, the division and parasitism of the soul was a desecration of the essence of life and magic, and even a trampling of human nature.
Dylan felt somewhat emotional.
Voldemort, in order to achieve his goals, used unscrupulous means, turning Quirrell into a tool for his resurrection, completely disregarding the other's will and life.
He did have the demeanor of a Dark Lord.
But that was all.
"A Dark Lord clinging to life, who could only try to resurrect himself through parasitism in the end, tsk tsk."
Holding several major max-level dark magic spells, especially his mastery of the Unforgivable Curses, Dylan didn't think he was weaker than Voldemort.
And he wouldn't let himself become like Voldemort in his current state.
—After all, he wasn't trying to rule the entire wizarding world, insisting that only pure-blood wizards could survive.
Live if you want, die if you don't. What did other people's choices have to do with little Voldy?
Dylan still couldn't figure out what Voldemort was trying to achieve with such a grand plan.
After much thought, he felt that the idea of Voldemort wanting to become the emperor of the wizarding world was more plausible.
Concentrating all power in his own hands, ultimately to concoct immortality for himself.
"But in this magical world with mysterious powers, no matter how strong magic is, it can be overwhelmed by human wave tactics. It's not a world of cultivation with absolute power suppression."
Moreover...
In this world, who else could have higher combat power than Dumbledore now?
If Voldemort really fought Dumbledore, he might not even win. How could he become emperor?
"Sigh, whatever. Anyway, Voldemort has Harry to deal with. I'll just use him to farm achievements and tasks in my spare time."
