Chapter 77: Talent and Trust
The strategic advantage gained by capturing Ashford Town was palpable in the command post. Maps were updated, troop positions marked, and the intelligence gleaned from Mayor Croft was dissected by Tatsuo and his commanders. Scout reports continued to filter in via Reeldos's network, confirming the initial assessment: while Veridian City was undoubtedly aware of Ashford's fall by now, no significant counter-offensive had been launched. Viscount Greenvein seemed hesitant, perhaps consolidating his forces or unsure of the Black Dragon Corps' true strength and intentions.
"He waits," Tatsuo mused aloud, tapping the map near Mossbrook Town. "He likely expects us to pause, consolidate Ashford fully, or perhaps make a direct, predictable push for Veridian City. We will do neither."
He looked at Rota and Reeldos. "Attacking Mossbrook Town now, swiftly, while Baron Selfridges likely still commands only his local forces, allows us to neutralize another key subordinate and secure a stepping stone directly towards Veridian. It prevents the Viscount from easily reinforcing both Barons."
Rota nodded. "A sound plan, Your Highness. It keeps the initiative firmly in our hands."
"Agreed," Reeldos added. "Scouts report normal garrison levels at Mossbrook. Taking it quickly isolates Veridian further."
"Then Mossbrook Town it is," Tatsuo decided. "But Ashford must be held securely while the main force advances." He turned to Anya. "Lady Stillfire, summon a soldier named Sayaki to me. He was recruited back in Yoroi City when I first joined the army."
Anya tilted her head slightly, accessing her memory banks – aided perhaps by Tatsuo's own shared knowledge via their connection, or simply excellent record-keeping. "Sayaki... yes, Your Highness. Eighteen years old. Recruited as having exceptional potential. Cultivation has risen rapidly?"
"The very same," Tatsuo confirmed with a slight smile. "A one-in-a-million talent. His cultivation reached Sky Gate Realm 2nd Level remarkably quickly for his age. Bring him here."
A few minutes later, Sayaki entered the command post. He was young, barely looking his eighteen years, with a lean build that didn't immediately scream 'warrior'. Yet, his eyes were sharp, intelligent, and held a focus that belied his youth. He moved with quiet confidence and saluted Tatsuo crisply. "Your Highness, you summoned me?"
"I did, Sayaki," Tatsuo replied, observing the young man who had caught his attention months ago. "I have a critical task for you."
He gestured towards the map. "The main body of the Black Dragon Corps is advancing on Mossbrook Town. However, Ashford must remain secure behind us. We cannot leave it unguarded, nor can I spare experienced knights or Rare Commanders from the main assault."
Tatsuo met Sayaki's focused gaze. "The 150 soldiers who surrendered yesterday and swore loyalty require a commander. They need organization and purpose. I am assigning you temporary command over this garrison force, with the acting rank of Captain."
Sayaki's eyes widened slightly in surprise, but he remained composed.
"Your mission, Captain Sayaki," Tatsuo continued, emphasizing the title, "is to hold Ashford Town. Maintain order amongst the populace and discipline within your garrison unit. Establish patrols, maintain the defenses, and report immediately any significant enemy movements detected from the south or west. I am placing considerable trust in you, Sayaki. Your talent is recognized, but this command is a test."
Sayaki straightened, his surprise replaced by a fierce determination. "Your Highness," he said, his voice clear and steady, "I understand the weight of this command. I accept this duty and this trust. I will hold Ashford Town."
"I expect nothing less," Tatsuo said with a nod of approval. "Lady Stillfire will provide you with the necessary command tokens and resources. Select your own deputies from within the garrison. Dismissed, Captain."
Sayaki saluted again and departed, already mentally organizing his new command. Tatsuo watched him go, confident in his choice. Now, with his rear secured by promising young talent, he could focus entirely on the next step: the swift subjugation of Mossbrook Town.
"Commanders," Tatsuo announced, turning back to the main group, "relay the orders. The Black Dragon Corps marches on Mossbrook at dawn."
