The engagement party at the Montgomery estate was everything I'd expected—elegant, expensive, and suffocating. I stood beside Ethan in the grand ballroom, wearing a cream silk gown that cost more than most people's cars, smiling until my cheeks ached as guest after guest congratulated us on our upcoming marriage.
"You look radiant, dear," Elaine Montgomery gushed, clasping my hands. "Absolutely glowing. Love suits you."
If only she knew the truth. That the glow was probably from exhaustion, not love. That I'd barely slept since signing those papers three days ago.
"Thank you," I managed. "Everything is so beautiful."
"Nothing but the best for our favorite couple." Gabriel appeared beside his wife, beaming with paternal pride. "Ethan, you've outdone yourself. Maya is absolutely perfect."
I felt Ethan's hand tighten on my waist. "I'm the lucky one," he said smoothly. "Maya agreed to put up with me for life."
