Let's talk about Hidan. The last time he ventured to Kumogakure to capture the Two-Tails, he got bitten by some bugs. Those weren't ordinary pests—they laid eggs inside him, setting up shop and multiplying like roaches. No matter what he tried, he couldn't get rid of them.
Now, Hidan's body was a wreck, riddled with holes that'd make anyone with trypophobia recoil. Lucky for him, his immortal physique kept him kicking. A regular shinobi? They'd have been dead ages ago.
This was the bug plague of the Land of Lightning.
It all started when Aburame Torune deliberately got himself captured. Kumogakure extracted nano-poison bugs from his body and began experimenting. Somehow, a few enhanced strains escaped the lab, and things spiraled out of control.
These bugs were the ultimate survivors: unmatched reproduction, parasitic prowess, adaptability, and an appetite for anything. They didn't discriminate.
The people of the Land of Lightning suffered dearly, and the plague spread to neighboring smaller nations. At first, Hidan couldn't stand the agony of ten thousand bugs gnawing at his insides. But soon, he embraced it, savoring the pain as a gift from his Jashinist faith. He became obsessed, preaching that the bugs were a blessing from Lord Jashin himself, urging others to let the parasites take root.
Hidan brought the bug plague back to the Land of Rain. That was the last straw for Konan—she vowed to blast him to smithereens once this was over.
...
In the tense silence, Yakushi Kabuto didn't flinch. He glanced at Hidan, unfazed by the awkward atmosphere.
"I know it sounds far-fetched, and you don't get it, but those bugs in Hidan's body? They're likely otherworldly creatures. That's why chakra has no effect on them."
He continued, "Then there's those guys rallying refugees into armies. They came out of nowhere, no trace of their origins. With the Akatsuki's intel network, we should've caught wind of such oddballs, but we know nothing about them."
"The red ice in the oceans, the bugs in the Land of Lightning, unheard-of powerhouses, and Uchiha Sasuke's bizarre abilities—they might all hail from worlds we don't understand. Worst of all, chakra's practically useless against these anomalous forces."
Kabuto laid it out plain and simple. Most of his theories came from Orochimaru-sama, who was sharp as a kunai and meticulous to boot. Orochimaru had learned that chakra and the Ōtsutsuki clan originated beyond the stars. Facing Sasuke's alien powers, he'd pieced together a "truth" from faint clues.
But Orochimaru's idea of "other worlds" likely meant distant planets or cosmic races like the Ōtsutsuki, capable of crossing the void.
Kakuzu rubbed his temples. He'd lived in the shinobi world for decades and never heard of other worlds. After a moment, he grunted,
"The bugs in Hidan's body are weird, no doubt. Ninja medicine's useless against them. If they're from another world, it's a stretch, but it tracks."
"Other worlds, huh?" Pein's expressionless gaze swept over the group, his Rinnegan glinting coldly.
"This filthy, despair-ridden world is now so weak it's being torn apart by another…"
Ripples of dark resolve flickered in his eyes. Long-distance's determination hardened—no matter what, he had to revive the Ten-Tails!
...
Earlier, for reasons unknown, Ōnoki had openly sheltered "Konoha's rogue ninja" and issued a call for an alliance.
Kumogakure, Kirigakure, and Konoha responded.
Kumogakure was holding up decently, but Kirigakure and Konoha were barely clinging to life. Sunagakure had vanished entirely. Any surviving Suna ninja were in hiding, too scared to show their faces, lest Gaara drag them back to a "carefree" life.
Under Ōnoki's leadership, the major ninja villages formed their first-ever alliance. The process was rocky—nobody trusted it at first, but they had no choice but to cooperate.
Ōnoki's fists were too hard to argue with, and as Pein had said, a world war was brewing. Shinobi couldn't resist the tide of history. Band together, or face extinction.
Yamanaka Ino, Nara Shikamaru, and Akimichi Chōji found Tsunade, rejoining the fold. Inuzuka Kiba, Aburame Shino, Tenten, and Haruno Sakura were missing, their fates unknown. The rest of the "Konoha 11" were confirmed dead, reduced to corpses.
Over the years, Ōnoki had somehow purged all spies from the Land of Earth. Any outsider stepping foot in his territory was caught and arrested instantly, sealing off all information. The nation became an enigma—no one knew what was happening inside.
When shinobi from other lands set foot in the Land of Earth after years, their faces betrayed disbelief. They saw skies of pristine blue, flawless white clouds, and endless fields stretching to the horizon.
Such sights were mundane once, but now they were rare treasures. The outside world, ravaged by environmental shifts, was cloaked in gray haze, like a veil over the sky. Plants withered in droves, and decay was everywhere.
The Land of Earth, bursting with vitality, was nothing short of miraculous!
Ōnoki personally greeted the three Kage. As they faced the strikingly handsome man, a strange dissonance hit them. Something felt off, as if Ōnoki shouldn't look like this. But memories flooded back—hadn't he always been the ninja world's top heartthrob? They quickly dismissed the unease.
Because Ōnoki had harbored "traitor ninja," the Land of Fire used it as a pretext to declare all-out war.
In this conflict, a new power system, wholly distinct from chakra, finally surfaced. Many in the refugee legions wielded this force.
...
In a frigid laboratory, several legion soldiers were strapped to operating tables. They'd been secretly abducted by ninja. Chakra scalpels sliced open their chests, revealing warped, mutated organs.
Their hearts beat sluggishly, far slower than normal, exuding an aura of vile corruption. No blood seeped from the incisions. Black muscle fibers writhed and twitched, looking like necrotic tissue yet healing visibly.
No anesthesia was used, yet the soldiers showed no pain or fear—just the eerie silence of corpses. Their deep, lifeless eyes stared at the onlookers, chillingly intense, as if some monstrous entity peered through them, watching everything.
"These guys' bodies have been altered by a strange power," the lead medical ninja said, frowning.
"They're more like puppets. Their stats far exceed normal humans, averaging chūnin-level strength, but they've lost all emotions, sensations, and body heat—they match the ambient temperature. Aside from their appearance, they're barely human."
"So these are our enemies?" he muttered. "They don't seem that tough…"
