In the midst of exchanged punches and grunts, I suddenly found myself rolled over by Arthur, his weight pinning me down. He loomed over me, knife poised, ready to plunge toward my throat. With every ounce of strength I could muster, I managed to catch his wrist mere inches from my throat, straining against the pressure.
"It's useless to struggle," Arthur taunted, his face twisted with a mixture of anger and satisfaction.
With determination burning within me, I redirected his knife away from my neck, feeling the blade slice into my left shoulder with a brutal grunt of pain. "Augh!" I gasped, but adrenaline drowned out the suffering. In a swift move, I grabbed the back of Arthur's head and delivered a hard headbutt. He loosened his grip just enough for me to catch a glimpse of the gun on the floor.
Desperation fueled my movements as I seized his collar, rolling him off to the right toward the weapon. With renewed vigor, I delivered a single punch to Arthur's jaw, disorienting him before I lunged for the gun with a leap, grasping it tightly as I rolled over my right shoulder.
Aiming down the sights with one arm, I steadied my breathing, locking on to Arthur. "Two precise shots fired; one struck his leg, the second found its mark in his head."
"I'm sorry for letting you down, Arthur," I murmured, the finality of my actions weighing heavily on my heart. Boom! The sound of the gun echoed in the cramped space, and almost immediately, the entrance of the office building imploded—half the structure collapsing in on itself, burying us in rubble.
"Well, Arthur, it seems that both our luck has run out," I said, a faint smile creeping onto my face despite the bleakness surrounding us. "We can finally be together once more, my beloved."
In that moment, memories of her flooded my thoughts—the poem I had written for her funeral playing softly in my mind.
*In the depths of my heart, a promise I make,
To be there for you, no matter what fate.
Through highs and lows, in every endeavor,
I'll stand by your side, always and forever.*
*As we part ways, with bittersweet emotion,
I bid you farewell, with heartfelt devotion.
May your journey be filled with endless delight,
And happiness surrounds you both day and night.*
*In the tapestry of life, our paths may diverge,
But know that my love for you will never submerge.
Distance may separate us, but our bond remains,
Unwavering friendship, a treasure that sustains.*
*Through laughter and tears, through joy and strife,
I'll hold you close in the tapestry of life.
And though our paths may lead us far apart,
Know that you'll forever have a place in my heart.*
*So as you embark on new adventures anew,
May sunshine illuminate your path in everything you do.
May happiness embrace you, like a warm embrace,
As I bid you farewell, with love and grace.*
As loud crashes and groans of the collapsing building reached my ears, engulfing me in rubble and darkness, silence fell. There, in the void, I heard a deep laugh—an unsettling sound that seemed to resonate around me.
"Are you really okay with dying like this?" a voice spoke, rich and foreboding.
"Yes, yes, I am," I responded, my courage unwavering in the face of death.
The unknown presence chuckled again. "Interesting. You must want to know how she died."
"Shut up! She died in a car crash involving a drunk driver; that's what the higher-ups told me!" I shouted, the grief and anger surging within me.
"Oh, is that the story they told you?" the voice countered, dripping with sarcasm and intrigue.
Darkness enveloped me, and in that shadowy limbo, I braced for whatever revelation would follow. The battle may have been over, but the war within continued to rage—a confrontation between truths and lies, love and loss, and the mysteries of fate that still lingered.
