Chapter 20 - chapter 19

Ayana Malik sat on the floor, bruised but defiant. Her sharp green eyes met Raven's—wary at first, then flickering with recognition.

"Took you long enough," Ayana muttered, standing.

Raven smirked. "Traffic was bad."

Ayana cracked a small smile before glancing past her. "Ezra? Well, damn. Thought you were dead."

Ezra leaned casually against the doorframe. "I get that a lot."

Raven cut the reunion short. "No time. Can you move?"

Ayana rolled her shoulders, testing her muscles. "I can run."

Raven nodded. "Good. Let's go."

Azul's voice cut in, urgent. "Guys, we have a problem."

Ezra exhaled sharply. "Of course we do."

"Security just went into full lockdown. Someone tripped an alert."

Jiro's voice suddenly crackled over the comms, calm but edged with strain. "That would be me."

Raven's stomach tightened. "What happened?"

Jiro's breathing was ragged. "Had to improvise. They almost caught me. You guys need to go. I'll find another way."

No. That wasn't an option.

Raven exchanged a glance with Ayana and Ezra. No words were needed. They weren't leaving him behind.

They moved fast. The blaring alarms masked their footsteps as they slipped through the dim corridors, emergency lights flickering red against the steel walls. Shadows danced between flashes of security strobes, making visibility difficult—but that worked in their favor.

Azul's voice came back, tense. "Jiro's pinned in the west wing. You need to reach him before reinforcements cut him off."

Ezra's gaze locked onto Raven. "We don't split up, do we?"

"No," Raven said. "We move together."

They sprinted down the hall, weaving past fallen guards and slipping through security doors just before they locked down. Every second counted.

Ayana kept up easily, her breathing steady. Even after captivity, she hadn't lost her edge.

They weren't just escaping now.

They were fighting time.

They turned a corner—and nearly ran straight into a squad of heavily armed soldiers.

Ezra reacted first. Two precise shots. Two men down.

Raven was a blur of motion, twisting around a third guard, driving her knife deep into his side before shoving him into his partner. Ayana snatched a fallen stun baton and cracked the last soldier across the jaw.

Silence.

Look

Then Ayana smirked. "You know, for a rescue, this feels a lot like work."

Ezra chuckled, reloading. "You're welcome for the excitement."

Raven ignored them, checking Azul's updates. "Jiro is two floors up. We're taking the emergency stairs."

They moved quickly, footsteps light against the steel steps as they climbed.

At the top, Raven peeked through the door—clear for now.

Azul's voice came through. "Jiro's in the east corridor. Two guards outside his holding area. I don't have eyes inside."

Ezra smirked. "Want me to handle them?"

Raven was about to respond—when a shadow moved at the end of the hall.

Jiro stepped into view.

And he wasn't alone.

Two unconscious guards lay behind him.

He walked forward, calm, pistol in hand.

"Took you long enough," Jiro muttered.

Raven raised an eyebrow. "You looked like you had it under control."

Jiro smirked. "Not my first escape."

Ayana clapped him on the shoulder. "Good to see you still breathing, old man."

Ezra exhaled. "Alright, happy reunion. Let's go before we all stop breathing."

Azul's voice chimed in. "You have one minute before the next patrol reaches your location."

Raven nodded. "Then we leave—now."

The Tokyo facility was thick with tension as Raven, Ezra, Ayana, and Jiro moved toward the extraction point.

The distant hum of alarms had settled into a rhythmic pulse—a countdown to the inevitable.

Azul's voice crackled in their earpieces. "Security teams are sweeping the lower levels. You need to keep moving."

Raven checked the halls clear.

They slipped through the corridors, movements synchronized, silent.

Then—

A steel gate slammed down in front of them.

Ezra cursed. "That's new."

Jiro was already moving, pulling a stolen keycard from his pocket. "Can Azul override it?"

Azul's voice came back, tense. "Not fast enough. They just locked down this sector remotely. You've got company incoming."

Raven didn't hesitate. "We hold position. Take them out fast, get to the roof."

Heavy boots echoed down the hall—eight guards, tactical formation, armed to the teeth.

Ezra glanced at Ayana, who nodded. "We've been through worse."

The first soldier stepped through—Raven struck.

A silenced shot. One down.

Jiro swept the legs out from under the second, finishing him with a precise strike.

Ezra fired—three shots, three down.

Ayana flipped the last over her shoulder, his head cracking against the concrete floor.

Silence.

Then Azul's voice returned. "The rooftop is clear, but I can't keep the helipad open for long. Move—now."

Raven didn't wait. "Go."

They sprinted through the corridors, taking the stairs two at a time.

The Tokyo skyline burst into view as they hit the rooftop, city lights stretching endlessly below them.

The phoenix was waiting.

Ezra took point, covering their exit. Jiro helped Ayana climb in first.

Then—shouts. Heavy boots. More guards flooding the rooftop.

Too many to fight.

Ezra fired into the crowd, forcing them into cover.

Raven grabbed Jiro's arm. "Time to go."

They leaped into the helicopter. Ezra followed as the pilot lifted off, gunfire chasing them into the sky—too late.

They were free.

Azul's voice filled their comms, relieved. "Welcome back, team."

Raven exhaled, finally letting herself breathe.

They had done it.

The Realization

The rhythmic hum of the phoenix blades filled the cabin as they soared over the neon-lit skyline of Tokyo.

Below, the city pulsed with life, oblivious to the war raging in the shadows.

Raven leaned back against her seat, exhaling. Mission complete. Ayana and Jiro were safe. Ezra had proven himself an asset. The operation had been—

Her heart stopped.

Kai.

The weight of the realization slammed into her like a freight train.

In the chaos—the alarms, the firefight, the sprint to the rooftop—she had forgotten about Kai Ramirez.

Ezra noticed her shift instantly. His sharp gaze locked onto hers. "Raven? You good?"

Her jaw tightened. No.

Not even close.

The Moment of Realization

Jiro, still catching his breath, glanced at Raven. "Something wrong?"

Her mouth felt dry. Azul's voice buzzed in her ear, rattling off updates on their flight path.

Raven turned sharply to Ayana; her tone clipped. "Kai. Where is he?"

The moment the name left her lips, an eerie silence swallowed the cabin.

Ayana's tired eyes widened in horror. "Wait—he was part of the mission, wasn't he?"

A curse slipped from Raven's lips. How the hell could she have forgotten?

Ezra frowned, his gaze snapping between them. "Who the hell is Kai?"

Jiro's expression darkened. "Kai Ramirez. Former intelligence operative. He was held in the same facility. Right?"

Raven clenched her jaw. "Yes."

The realization slammed into all of them at once.

Ezra muttered. "Shit."

Ayana pressed a hand to her forehead, exhaustion catching up to her. "I never saw him."

Jiro's fists clenched. "Which means he's still in there."

The weight of their mistake was suffocating.

Azul's voice cut through the comms, unaware of the tension drowning them. "ETA back to base in 45 minutes. You all did good out there—"

"Azul." Raven's voice was razor-sharp.

A pause. "…Yeah?"

Raven inhaled sharply. "We forgot Kai."

Silence.

Then, Azul's voice returned, tense, alert. "…What?"

A collective sense of dread settled over the team. They had left a man behind.

And now?

They had to go back.

The Yakuza Factor

A heavy silence pressed down on the cabin.

Jiro let out a slow breath before shaking his head. "No."

Raven's sharp gaze snapped to him. "No?"

Jiro met her eyes, his expression unreadable. "Kai wasn't in that facility."

The tension thickened. Ayana sat up straighter, confusion flickering across her face. "What do you mean?"

Jiro exhaled, fingers curling into fists. "Before I was captured, I overheard something. Kai was supposed to be in that prison with us, but Sable moved him." His voice was grim as his eyes locked onto Raven's. "They transferred him somewhere else in Tokyo."

Raven's stomach twisted. "Where?"

Jiro hesitated before finally saying it.

"With the Yakuza."

The words hit like a bomb.

Ezra let out a low whistle. "Shit."

Ayana's face twisted in disbelief. "You're serious?"

Jiro nodded. "The facility we were in was for high-priority prisoners. But Kai? He wasn't just a prisoner. He was leveraged. The Yakuza have him now."

Raven dragged her hand down, pushing back the frustration clawing at her. Of course, it wasn't going to be simple.

Ezra leaned back, rubbing his jaw. "So, what, we just storm a Yakuza stronghold now?" His tone was sarcastic, but the reality was anything but funny.

Jiro didn't blink. "No. If we go in blind, we're dead."

Raven's mind raced. Kai Ramirez wasn't just another operative. He was one of the best intelligence specialists they'd ever worked with. If the Yakuza had him, there would have to be a reason.

Either they were using him… or planning to sell him to the highest bidder.

Azul's voice came through the comms, now fully engaged. "I'm pulling everything I can on Yakuza operations in Tokyo. If Jiro's right, we don't have much time."

Raven's jaw tightened. "Then we go back."

Ezra exhaled sharply. "Damn. I was hoping we'd get at least one full night of sleep before jumping into another death trap."

The Mission Set-Up:

Ayana shook her head. "If the Yakuza have Kai, we need to move fast. They don't hold onto people for long."

Raven nodded, her jaw set. "Agreed." She turned to Jiro. "How much do you know?"

Jiro crossed his arms, eyes flickering with resolve. "Enough to get us started. But we'll need a plan."

Raven's smirk was fierce, determination burning in her eyes. "Good. Then let's go get our guy."

The High Stakes Infiltration:

The jet cut through the stormy Tokyo skyline, its cloaking systems active as it hovered above the neon-lit city. Rain pattered against the hull, distorting the sea of lights below. The team sat tense—every second spent in the air brought them closer to the unknown.

They were flying blind.

Raven sat in the cockpit, her hands steady on the controls. The mistake she'd made—forgetting Kai during the briefing—gnawed at her, but now wasn't the time for self-doubt. With Jiro's intel, this wasn't just a rescue. It was a high-stakes mission against the Yakuza.

Ezra strapped on his tactical gear. "Alright. We go in, grab Kai, and get the hell out. No unnecessary fights."

Ayana scoffed, double-checking her pistol. "Yeah? Because the Yakuza are known for being cooperative."

Jiro remained silent, his gaze distant, staring out at the city below. His knuckles were white against his folded arms.

Raven reduced the engines to a near whisper as they neared the drop zone. Azul's voice crackled through the comms. "You're flying into unknown territory. I can't pull up anything on Kai's current location."

"Doesn't matter," Raven replied, her eyes locked on the towering skyscraper ahead. "We find him the old-fashioned way."

Silent infiltration. Extract Kai before the Yakuza realized what hit them.

But they didn't know... Kai Ramirez didn't need rescuing.

The squad rappelled silently from the hovering jet, landing soundlessly on the roof of a Yakuza compound nestled among Tokyo's high-rises. They moved with precision, disciplined in their steps—every movement was calculated.

Ezra took the lead, pistol drawn. Jiro moved beside him, cautious. Raven, Ayana, and Sophia spread out, covering angles as they approached the main ventilation system for entry.

Jiro's gut screamed at him. Something felt off.

"Hold up," he whispered, raising a fist to signal a stop.

Raven shot him a sharp look. "What?"

Jiro exhaled, his voice low. "None of this makes sense. Kai shouldn't be here."

Ayana frowned, checking her weapon. "You literally told us the Yakuza took him."

Jiro hesitated, then nodded. "I thought they did."

Ezra's eyes narrowed. "Then what aren't you saying?"

Jiro's voice dropped, eyes glinting. "The Yakuza don't keep hostages like this. If they really had Kai, he'd be dead or sold by now."

That's when the roof access door swung open.

A squad of armed guards flooded the rooftop, moving with precision—but they didn't attack. Instead, they stepped aside.

And from the shadows, Kai Ramirez emerged.

Flawless suit. Controlled posture. A calm, knowing smirk.

Jiro stiffened. "No way…"

Ezra's grip tightened on his gun. "What the hell?"

Kai clasped his hands behind his back, surveying them with mild amusement. In a smooth, commanding voice, he spoke:

"I was wondering when you'd finally show up."

Raven's heart pounded. What the hell was going on?

Jiro's fists clenched. "You… you were never captured."

Kai chuckled. "Captured? No." He gestured toward the Yakuza soldiers standing around them. "I run this place."

A stunned silence fell over the rooftop.

Ezra muttered under his breath. "Well… shit."

Kai took a step toward Raven, his gaze focused, unflinching. "I should be insulted that you came crashing in like this." His smirk widened. "But I'll admit, it's good to see you all."

Raven wasn't amused. "You wanna explain why the hell you never reached out?"

Kai sighed, rolling his shoulders as he gestured toward the city below. "Things weren't that simple." He looked back at them. "When the world thinks you're dead, you have two choices: stay buried or build something new. I chose the latter."

Ezra scoffed, raising his eyebrows. "And what, you're just some crime boss now?"

Kai gave him a pointed look. "The Yakuza is more than just a crime syndicate. I took control to stop them from being used by men like Sable."

Kai's words hung heavily in the air as Raven absorbed the truth. Kai Ramirez wasn't just a victim—he was running the Yakuza now.

His smooth transition from ally to enemy was both terrifying and exhilarating. What had Kai been doing all this time, and why didn't they know?

Raven's eyes met Kai's; her voice was sharp. "You left us in the dark. You've been here all along, playing this game with Sable, and you didn't think to tell us?"

Kai's smirk faded, replaced by a cool, almost regretful expression. "I didn't want to bring this fight to you. The Yakuza is a powerful tool—and now, I'm using it to destroy everything Sable built."

The weight of his words settled on her. Raven had just been handed another card in this war—and it wasn't what she'd expected.

Ezra stood still, eyes narrowing as he processed. "So, what now? Are we working together or not?"

Kai glanced at him, his smirk returning. "Let's just say, we have a common enemy."

The Phoenix roared through the night sky, engines humming as it sliced through the clouds. Below them, the hidden airstrip stretched in the darkness, dim runway lights guiding their descent. As the landing gear engaged, the steel platform extended, leading them into the underground hangar.

Raven exhaled, finally allowing herself to relax as she powered down the controls. "Home sweet home."

The ramp lowered, and one by one, the newly recruited fighters stepped onto solid ground. Kai Ramirez adjusted his jacket, his gaze sweeping across the base with calculated ease. Jiro and Ezra exchanged knowing looks—they had barely made it out of Tokyo intact,

At the entrance, Jeffrie, Trice, and Ray stood, arms crossed, assessing the returning team.

Azul was already at her terminal, fingers flying across the holographic keyboard, her voice sharp as she logged the mission details. "We have 12 confirmed recruits." She glanced up, her expression serious. "We're down to the final three."

Jeffrie stepped forward, locking eyes with Kai. "You clear on where you stand now?"

Kai's smirk returned. "I was clear the second I stepped onto that jet."

Jiro gave a firm nod. "We're in. All of us."

Ezra leaned against the bulkhead; arms folded. "So, what's next?"

Jeffrie turned to Azul. "Break it down."

Debriefing: The Rescued & The Final Three

The war room was packed. Fighters filled the space, some standing, others leaning against the walls. Exhaustion hung in the air, but more than that—determination.

The holographic screen displayed the list of recovered allies so far:

Azul swiped her fingers across the screen, shifting to the last three targets.

⚠ Nia Caldwell

⚠ Idris Faheem

⚠ Tasha Grant

Their current location?

A classified underwater black site.

Silence fell over the room.

Even the most hardened fighters exchanged uneasy glances.

Azul looked up at Jeffrie, Trice, and Ray. "It's you three. The Big Trio takes this one."

Jeffrie cracked his knuckles. "Then let's finish this."

Final Mission Prep: The Deep-Sea Assault

Trice let out a low whistle. "An underwater prison? Man, they really didn't want these three getting out."

Ray exhaled sharply. "How the hell are we getting in there?"

Azul smirked, flicking her fingers across the holo-screen, bringing up the schematics of a deep-sea facility. The structure was massive—buried beneath the ocean floor, with reinforced pressure locks, multiple defense systems, and a network of heavily guarded corridors.

"Lucky for us," Azul said, adjusting her glasses, "I cracked into their system while we were infiltrating Tokyo. This place is off-grid, but not impenetrable."

Jeffrie studied the blueprint carefully, his eyes narrowing at the layers of security. "We're gonna need diving gear, explosives, and an exit strategy."

Ray rubbed his jaw, glancing at Azul. "And what's waiting for us inside?"

Azul's smirk faded slightly.

"…Enhanced security. Elite guards. Possibly Sable's personal enforcers."

Jeffrie's fists clenched. "Then we go in fast, hit hard, and get out before they even realize we were there."

Trice cracked his knuckles, his grin widening. "Now that's my kinda plan."

Ray's smirk returned as he rolled his shoulders. "Then let's suit up."

The war wasn't over yet.

It was time for the final extraction.
