Chapter 14 - Shovel

'How did it even…'

My mind raced for answers as I instinctively took a few steps back while dragging my unravelled eyes across the ground.

The feeling of the soft yet sharp grass against my eyes brought no discomfort or pain. I just felt the sensation of touch, nothing more and nothing less.

I almost stumbled down, the panic alongside the lack of vision was really playing on my balance now.

'What can I even do right now?'

I was blinded and my movement was kind of restricted as well.

'After all, it is not easy to move around while your eyes are hanging down from your sockets…'

The first idea that popped up in my mind was…

'It is better than just letting them hang down to the ground.'

I started to pull back the strings; I pulled back the stretched-out silky strings back into where they came from.

'I will just stuff them back into my eye sockets.'

And stuff them I did, I stuffed the tangly mess into where it came from.

It was kind of weird, no, it was weird.

The feeling of string getting stuffed into your eye sockets and the sensation of having your eyes being strings was really strange.

'Well, maybe it's because IT IS STRANGE.'

Some loose ends of the string still dropped down, but their length only reached my nose so I didn't bother much with it.

And as the strings was getting stuffed, my vision slowly started to recover.

'It seems like I can see now.'

I had vision as well as blind spots.

It might be due to the state my eyes are in right now; after all, they're just tangled up strings right now.

Some were big, some were small.

But none of them were enough to cause significant damage.

Anyways.

I glanced at the entity, still standing near the grave, through the corner of my thready eyeballs.

It was standing there, in the same awkward stance, silently watching me.

'It has stopped attacking after I stopped my sprint towards the door, so one thing is for certain…'

If I try to get close to the door, it will attack me.

'And its attack has the side effects of turning my body into strings.'

'Interesting.'

This is the first time I have ever encountered such a thing in this reality.

'An existence that could cause me harm…'

Not pain, just harm.

'It is like there are holes in my vision, holes of nothing.' Having your organs turn into strings was certainly not very pleasant.

My eyes still remained on the entity, waiting, waiting for it to make a move.

And…it didn't.

It just stood, waiting, waiting for me to make a move.

The waiting only lasted mere seconds until I, yes I, without hesitation darted towards the door once more.

And the entity, yes the entity, followed with a shovel it pulled out nowhere.

My steps were wide and loud, I have never ran for my life, so this was a first experience.

And honestly…

'It is kind of exciting.'

Like I always imagined how I would do in one of those slasher horror movies.

I glanced behind, the creature was following me with a shovel in hand again. Its speed wasn't too extraordinary, it was just normal.

Humanly normal.

'Why isn't it throwing the shovel though?' A reasonable doubt, I doubt that I would actually get the answer.

Well, it works to my benefit. So, I probably shouldn't question it.

I blurred past the soft green plains of grass, the blue sky above my head all disappeared behind me. I was running with a malicious entity following me and yet I ran so leisurely.

'It doesn't seem to have much intelligence.'

Strength isn't the only thing that matters in a fight, there's a reason why humans are the strongest creatures on earth.

'Intelligence.'

It was due to intelligence.

Humans were blessed with superior intelligence compared to other animals.

'But not all humans are intelligent.'

I've seen some people that were as dumb as a blade of grass.

My pace came to an end when a plain white door was just a foot away from me.

As I have already said, this place wasn't big at all.

I took a quick glance behind me, the entity was still at least three or four metres away from me.

The anticipation and excitement fuelled my mind as I fumbled for the knob.

But…

'I couldn't.'

Guess why? I bet you can't.

I will tell ya then.

It was because a certain shovel was stabbed through the hand that was on the knob.

'It took its sweet little time…'

Why did it think of throwing the shovel now?

It had all the time in its hand when it ran after but it just decided to hurl the shovel at me now.

The shovel went right through my hand, not through flesh but through unravelling strings.

My left hand was turning into strings.

I immediately looked back, my stringy hand still on the knob, the entity had stopped running and now it was just walking up to me, menacingly.

'Was it taunting me? Mocking me? Is its intelligence capable of that?'

A reasonable question but there was another question that was way more reasonable than that.

'Was I this stupid? Why didn't I think of it trying to throw the shovel again?'

'Why isn't my usual paranoia not working? Huh?'

Who knows.

Anyways.

'Why is it just walking? Is it that stupid?'

Slow, it was way too slow.

Not that I'm complaining, I appreciate it honestly.

'I can take my sweet little time now.'

I think so.

I hope so.

My attention went back to the knob, my left hand had already been completely turned into strings.

'I can feel them and…I can move them.'

Oh, the endless possibilities

'But…my left hand has completely turned into strings…how am I supposed to open the door now!?'

Truly unfortunate.

I used my right hand to open the door.
