"I should take you to the house, then I'll come back later once I've settled everything here. It's still a little chaotic, and I don't want you and the baby in such an environment,"
Tanner says, his voice still rough from exhaustion and emotion. His eyes flick between Jess and Kyle, serious and steady.
They both nod quietly, silently agreeing to Tanner's words.
"Can I see your wound?" Tanner asks, gently handing the baby to Kyle. Kyle takes the infant without breaking eye contact with Jess, concern etched deep in his gaze.
Jess hesitates, his finger shake slightly as he lift his shirt. "I don't feel anything anymore," he murmurs, voice low, almost uncertain.
Tanner can't help but brush the back of his hand lightly across Jess's smooth stomach, a place where it seems nothing has been disturbed, nothing broken.
His hand lingers far too long before he quickly pulls it back, clearing his throat awkwardly, clearly embarrassed by how much he was almost carried away.
