Zou followed Rui back to their chambers, his tails occasionally brushing against her as they walked.
When they reached the door, Rui noticed Kee Kee had conveniently disappeared—probably giving them space in his own grumpy but thoughtful way.
The bed welcomed them both, sheets still warm.
Zou hesitated for just a moment before sliding in beside her.
His arms found their way around her waist, pulling her close until her back pressed against his chest. His tails draped over them both like a blanket of silk and warmth.
"Princess," Zou murmured, his breath tickling her ear, "I don't think I've been this happy in nine thousand years."
Rui tilted her head to look at him, studying the soft vulnerability in his usually mischievous eyes.
"Nine thousand years is a long time to wait for happiness."
"Worth every century." His fingers traced along her arm.
"If you've been watching me for centuries," Rui asked, "why did you never approach me before?
