Chapter 35 - CHAPTER 35: WHAT WE BUILD

The day Isabel opened the doors to Rising Root Consulting, the air smelled like hope. It wasn't just about sleek furniture or custom signs. It was the feeling that something she had built from pain was finally blooming into purpose.

Adrian was the first one through the door that morning, carrying a box of pastries and a bouquet of sunflowers.

"For the boss," he said with a grin.

She rolled her eyes but smiled. "You're not supposed to bribe the CEO."

"It's not a bribe. It's breakfast. Plus admiration."

He kissed her forehead and looked around. "This place feels like you. Warm. Focused. Alive."

---

By mid-afternoon, the space buzzed with young interns, Jude juggling appointment calls, and Isabel giving a speech during the soft launch.

"I wanted to create a place where fear didn't get the final say," she said, her voice steady. "Where survivors become strategists. Where healing becomes action."

The applause wasn't thunderous, but it was genuine. Her words mattered, and the people in the room felt them.

Harper approached afterward. "You've gone from mentee to mentor. I couldn't be prouder."

Isabel hugged her. "Thank you for pushing me, even when I hated it."

"I did it because I saw something unbreakable in you."

---

Later that night, Isabel and Adrian were curled up on the office floor, eating leftover cake and drinking cheap wine.

"This place," Adrian said, gesturing around them, "is going to change lives."

"I hope so," Isabel whispered. "But even if it changes just one... I think that's enough."

"You already changed mine."

They kissed slowly, no longer in hiding, no longer afraid.

Across town, Vanessa finalized paperwork for her new nonprofit—a mental health NGO focused on university students.

She looked at Jude, who was balancing her laptop on one knee and a sleeping puppy on the other.

"We're really doing it," she said.

"You mean taking over the world in emotionally sensitive ways? Yes. Yes, we are."

She laughed. "I love you, you know."

"I know. And I love you, messy, loud, and all."

---

Back at Rising Root, Isabel posted a new quote on the front desk wall:

"We rise by rooting ourselves in what once tried to bury us."

She stood back, reading it over, her chest full.

Adrian came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist.

"I think we're ready," he said.

"For what?"

"For forever."
