Chapter 72 - Episode 72 The Day of Departure

The day of departure arrived. My bags were packed, my room empty and echoing. My parents were trying to hide their nervousness with cheerful smiles and last-minute advice. It was a mix of excitement for the new beginning and the heavy weight of leaving home, leaving the familiar, leaving Sakura.

Sakura was leaving the same day, heading to the city of Todai. Our schedules were different, our departure points separate. There was no grand, movie-like farewell at a train station platform, just a quiet understanding that the moment of physical separation was here.

We met briefly that morning, before heading our separate ways. We stood in a small park near our houses, the kind of ordinary place we had often passed without much thought, but which now felt imbued with the significance of a final meeting point.

The conversation was quiet, filled with unspoken emotions. We talked about trivial things – the weather, the traffic, whether we had remembered to pack everything. It was easier than talking about the miles that would soon be between us, the uncertainty of the future.

Sakura's eyes held a mix of anticipation for Todai and a deep sadness. She looked radiant, as always, ready to step into her brilliant future. But in her gaze, I saw the girl who had admitted her fear of distance, who had needed a refuge from the expectations.

"I'm going to miss you, Hiroshi-kun," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Miss you too, Sakura," I replied, my voice thick with emotion. "A lot."

She reached out and took my hands, her grip firm. "We'll call. Every day, right? And text?"

"Every day," I promised, squeezing her hands back. "And we'll visit. As soon as we can."

"Yes," she said, a small, determined smile touching her lips. "We will. We promised."

The promise hung in the air, a lifeline between us. It was our anchor in the face of this impending separation.

We stood there for a few more minutes, just holding hands, the quiet park around us a silent witness to our farewell. There were no dramatic tears, no grand declarations, just the simple, heartfelt acknowledgement of what we meant to each other and the shared commitment to bridging the distance.

Saying goodbye was just... goodbye. A simple word for such a monumental moment. We hugged, a tight, lingering hug that conveyed everything words couldn't. The comfort, the sadness, the hope, the determination.

"Go be amazing at Todai, Sakura," I murmured into her hair.

"You too, Hiroshi," she replied, her voice muffled. "Go find your path."

We slowly pulled apart, our hands separating, a physical representation of the distance that was about to become real. We looked at each other one last time, a silent exchange of promises and unwavering support.

Then, with a deep breath, we turned and walked in opposite directions, towards the separate futures we had chosen. I didn't look back, and she didn't either, though I felt a strong urge to. Walking away from her, towards my own train station, felt like taking the first real step into the long-distance chapter of our relationship.

The hometown faded behind me, the familiar streets giving way to the less known. The train ride felt long, the landscape blurring outside the window. I was heading towards my new university, my new life, but a part of me was already miles away, hoping that the promise we had made, the connection we had found, would be strong enough to bridge the distance that had just become our new reality. The day of departure was here, and the unexpected story was entering its most challenging phase yet.
