Chapter 19 - chapter 19: toxic marriage pack in toxic promises

---

[Back to Marvin]

The convoy rolled slowly into the sprawling driveway of Marvin's mansion. The engine died with a soft click. Inside the black limo, silence pressed down, heavy and suffocating.

Marvin's hand found Oliver's—steady, possessive. He lifted her fingers to his lips, kissing them lightly, with a slow, deliberate tenderness that didn't reach his eyes.

"I know I've been stupid," his voice was low, smooth like silk, but underneath it lurked a dangerous edge. "But I promise—for you, for our son—I'll be a better man. A good husband. So please, don't be mad."

Oliver said nothing.

Frustration flickered through him. He took her hand and hit his own face with it—once, twice—each impact sharp, echoing his desperate need for a response. "Talk to me. Scream. Insult me. I'll take it. Just don't be silent."

Her eyes, cool and unyielding, stayed fixed ahead—like she was seeing through him, past him, into some distant, unreachable place.

"Marrying you was the worst mistake I ever made," she said, voice low but cutting. "If you really want to change… then let me go. Go back to where you belong."

Marvin's fingers curled tighter around her wrist, an ironic smile playing at the corner of his mouth. "Go back? Baby, I'm your world. Your safe place. So where do you want to go? Hmm? Be good now."

He brushed his lips against her fingers, searching her eyes with his—dark, unreadable, like a man who's seen too many betrayals and is about to become one himself.

"You're disgusting," Oliver spat, finally breaking her silence. "You and Maria—perfect for each other. I don't want this marriage. Go back to her. I don't care. But seriously, you have the gall to ask forgiveness after you gave our son's eyes to Maria's? You want to transfer my heart to her?"

Her voice cracked, raw with hatred and grief as she pushed the limo door open and stepped out, head held high, but hands trembling.

She walked toward the car where Jake lay, surrounded by the towering bodyguards who formed an unbreakable wall.

Marvin stepped out too, his movements smooth and controlled, cufflinks clicking as he adjusted his collar like a predator preparing to strike.

"Jake's resting," Marvin said softly, voice almost tender, but underneath it curled a venomous promise. "You won't see him now. Not until he's ready. And you? You're not in the right state of mind to meet him."

Oliver's glare sharpened, every muscle coiled with barely suppressed fury. "Not in the right mind? You? You drugged him. You sedated him! Jake just had eye surgery. The doctor said—"

"Don't stress him," Marvin interrupted smoothly, eyes glittering with a dark amusement.

"But you..." Her voice broke, shaking with desperation and fury. "Damien is a hundred times better than you. He's not the real father, but he treats Jake like his own. You—you want to keep me away from my son? Don't you get it? Jake needs me!"

Marvin's smile twisted into something cold, dangerous. "Damien... he's a special kind of pest," he said with mock tenderness, voice dripping with sarcasm. "A man who lusts after a married woman... and her child. But don't worry, soon you'll forget him. Like he never existed."

He flicked his fingers in the air—a casual boom that echoed like a death sentence.

Oliver's breath caught. Her heart slammed painfully in her chest as she stormed forward, fists pounding against Marvin's chest with frantic desperation.

"What did you do to Damien? You promised me you'd leave him alone! How could you break your word? Brother Damien is a good man—how could you hurt him like this?"

Marvin's hand rose gently, as if petting a stray animal, and stroked her head condescendingly. "Naughty girl."

Suddenly, Oliver's fingers snatched a gun from one of the bodyguards—her hands trembling, her breath ragged but determined. She leveled the barrel at Marvin's chest, eyes blazing.

"You're pointing a gun at me because I hurt your precious brother Damien?" Marvin's voice cracked with manic laughter, eyes wild. "You betray me like this?"

His eyes darkened. "I just removed an obstacle." He flicked his hand toward the sky. "Sent him to a nice place. You really think you can handle this, baby? Put the gun down before you hurt yourself."

The bodyguards tensed—guns drawn, muscles coiled to intervene.

Oliver's voice was a whisper, trembling as tears spilled down her cheeks. "You killed him... you killed Damien."

Marvin laughed—a soft, chilling sound. "Don't cry for a man who isn't worth your tears." His hand slid over his chest. "It hurts my heart."

He lifted a finger to gently wipe her tears away—then froze.

A gunshot cracked through the air.

Marvin's eyes snapped down to his bleeding arm, shock flickering across his pale face. She dared shoot him.

The bodyguards swiveled instantly, guns raised on Oliver.

Damien stood frozen, staring at his own hands, tears welling before his eyes hardened like ice.

He raised a hand sharply. "Don't you dare shoot her."

He strode forward to Oliver.

"Shot me," Marvin challenged with a twisted grin, pressing the barrel of the gun to his temple. "Shot me if you want to die. Kill me now."

His voice dropped to a deadly whisper. "Because it's my fault I fell in love with you. Destroy this heart that beats only for you."

He leveled the gun at Damien's chest. "Shoot me. I'm mad. So mad. Kill me if you know what's good for you. Otherwise, you won't want to see what I do next."

Oliver glared at him, tears streaming down her face. "You killed Damien—my brother, my family. You separated me from him after everything he did for me. You should die."

Marvin's eyes burned with a cold, crazy obsession as he pointed at her. "Wonderful. You're mine. All mine. If you want, I'll give you my heart. Maria's heart. Her son's heart—all on a golden platter."

His gaze sharpened, voice silk-covered steel. "But you—you rely on another man? Bad, bad, bad."

His smile faded, replaced by a chilling calm as he closed his eyes.

"Kill me," he muttered.

"But we will never be separated." His voice dropped to a deadly hiss. "Kill me now, and my men will kill you. Then our bodies will lie buried together."

He chuckled, dark and low. "But no—Jake will be alone. Why don't we bring him along? Father, mother, son... dead by gunshot, buried together. A happy ending, right?"

Oliver's body froze, gun trembling in her hand as she stared at Marvin's closed eyes and twisted smile.

He wants her, and Jake, gone.

The gun clattered from her fingers. She collapsed to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Brother Damien... I can't avenge you... my Jake... my poor Jake," she cried, covering her face, broken.

Marvin opened one eye—cold, merciless.

"Since nobody's dying today," Damien said quietly, stepping forward. His voice was steel.

"Get ready for your punishment."

He lifted Oliver like a sack of potatoes, carrying her toward the house.

Behind them, the bodyguards and servants bowed their heads low—silent witnesses to the dark storm unfolding.

....

[Whispers from social media chatter, preview comments:]

> "This show is going to be a hit."

"I don't know… I kind of feel like this is going to get steamy."

"I feel like families will fall apart..."

"As long as this director is behind it, it's going to be a masterpiece."

[His new show should starts soon—I'm already obsessed."]

["If this is even half as good as Shadow Ties by this director, I'm locking my door and not leaving till all episodes are out."]

["I swear, this show's going to make me scream, cry, and throw my phone. I can feel it."]

[Not me already shipping contestants we haven't even met yet "]

[Just from the trailer, I know I'm going to fall for at least three dysfunctional families.]

[Omg the village scenes are healing my city-girl soul already]

["I just wanna watch people struggle to cook over fire and accidentally fall into rivers. Give me countryside chaos!!"]

["This show better have goats, kids falling in mud, and confused dads trying to make soup."]

["Not me planning to recreate the tasks with my cousins this summer "]

["They better not blur the fights. I want full verbal warfare."]

[Please tell me there's at least one scene where someone throws water and walks off dramatically.]

["I'm only here for the toxic family reunions and healing afterwards. Or not healing. Just fight ]

["The show is giving... Who needs enemies when you have relatives?"]

[This director never misses. If he told me to cry over a tree, I would.]

[He's the only one who can turn a family show into a psychological battlefield."]

[Ever since The Broken Teacup I swore I'd watch anything this man touches.]

[Please please please let Chaemin be in this show. I need to see her slay and cry and slay again]

["Y'all, what if two single parents fall in love? Director-nim don't waste this storyline."]

[I already wrote a 3k fanfic after watching that 2-minute trailer. Help me."]

["I'm here for the kids outsmarting their parents and the moms forming a gang."]

[If Hana West joins, everyone else can go home. Her stare alone starts drama."]

[I swear if Leo Zhang walks in with that icy smirk, the whole house will catch fire."]

["Please give us Yumi Rae. We need soft visuals, chaotic cooking, and poetic breakdowns."]

[I'm begging for Kai Rivera to be cast — tall, dangerous, emotional? YES PLEASE.]

[Imagine Lina Grace and Haruto Blake in the same room. Silent tension, loud hearts. We'll die."]

[Min Jae Park better be there. I want my daily dose of elegance and fake politeness."]

["Not me refreshing the cast list every 3 minutes just to see if Tessa Liu is in 😭. That girl brings fashion, chaos, and teacup drama."]

["Aria Chen is so mother. The only one who will unpack emotional trauma and food in the same scene."]

[If Ethan Kwon doesn't show up I'm suing the director. I need awkward eye contact, unfinished sentences, and a near-kiss in episode 7."]
