Chapter 28 - SCP - 029 "Daughter of Shadows"

SCP - 029 "Daughter of Shadows"

Object Class - Keter

-----------------------------------------------------------

Site-17, SCP-029 Containment Cell

Floodlights bathed the cell in harsh white, casting no shadows. Dr. Ericka Bodeen stood just outside the triple airlock, clipboard in hand. Beyond the reinforced glass, SCP-029 sat cross-legged on the floor, her skin a patchwork of midnight black and stark white, eyes like twin voids.

A female guard checked her comm. "Dr. Bodeen, you're clear to proceed. Remember: no sudden movements, and do not approach the glass."

Ericka nodded, pressing the intercom. "Good morning, SCP-029."

The girl's head snapped up, a cold smile curling her lips. "You again. The one who brings me rags."

Ericka forced calm into her voice. "Clothes are a basic dignity. Even you deserve that."

029's fingers flexed. "You fear me, but you pity me. Why?"

"Because you're a child," Ericka replied softly, "and you're alone."

The girl's eyes narrowed. "I am never alone. My followers dream of me. Even now."

Ericka glanced at her notes. "You know why men aren't allowed near you?"

029's smile widened. "They are weak. Their hearts are soft, their minds easy to mold. I could make you open this door, if you were a man."

Ericka's jaw tightened. "That's why I'm here. You can't control me."

The girl shrugged. "Perhaps not. But you still fear the dark, don't you, Doctor?"

Ericka hesitated. "I fear what you could do, if you were free."

029's voice dropped to a whisper. "You should."

A silence stretched between them, broken only by the hum of the lights.

Ericka tried a different approach. "Why do you hate the light?"

The girl's face twisted. "The light is a cage. It burns. It keeps me from my purpose."

"And what is your purpose?" Ericka pressed.

"To end the world of men. To bring the night that never ends. My followers know this. They wait for my return."

Ericka scribbled a note. "Your followers are gone. The Foundation stopped them."

029's eyes blazed. "You killed my people. I felt every death. But the night is patient. Shadows always return."

Ericka's voice softened. "You don't have to be their weapon. You could choose something else."

The girl laughed, a sound cold as winter. "Choice? I am what I was made to be. You cannot change the night, Doctor."

A buzzer sounded. The guard signaled time was up.

Ericka stood, gathering her notes. "We'll talk again soon."

029's voice followed her to the door, low and menacing: "You will dream of me, Doctor. And when the lights go out, you'll know I am waiting."
