Chapter 59 - CHAPTER 59

c59: Unexpected Gain

"I said before that during the Warring States Period, the Senju clan and the Uchiha clan were the two most powerful ninja clans."

"Especially after Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara succeeded their fathers as clan leaders, the strength of the two clans far surpassed that of any others."

"And this strength wasn't just about the personal power of Hashirama and Madara it extended to the average combat ability of the clan's elite shinobi."

"It was exactly because both clans held such overwhelming power that feuding daimyos would naturally choose to hire either the Senju or the Uchiha. When one hired the Senju, their enemies hired the Uchiha and vice versa."

"This dynamic only deepened the hatred between the two clans over decades of bloodshed."

"But if these two greatest enemies Senju and Uchiha could abandon their past and work together, wouldn't that set a powerful example for all the other clans?"

Shisui and Itachi nodded without hesitation.

"In this way, those clans that harbored doubts or suspicions about Senju dominance could gradually lay down their fears."

"What kind of doubts and fears?"

"Of course fears of becoming subordinate, or even being absorbed entirely, losing their identity as distinct clans."

"You need to understand something essential. When Konoha was first founded, it was essentially a federation of small and large ninja clans. Like a massive family."

"The Senju clan specifically Senju Hashirama became the de facto head of this super-family. He held the highest authority and the greatest power, as was expected of a leader."

"But that doesn't mean the Senju had the right to oppress, exploit, or erase other clans. The structure had hierarchy and division of labor, but in principle, every clan retained its dignity."

"Why did the major clans, including our Uchiha, choose to join Konoha in the first place?"

"It was for a stable, long-lasting peace, for improved livelihood, and for the hope of a better future."

"If it weren't for these promises, why would anyone give up independence and join a collective like Konoha?"

"Don't you agree?"

Shisui and Itachi nodded eagerly. They were completely absorbed.

"If the Uchiha clan had refused to cooperate with the Senju, would the other clans have followed the Senju alone?"

"Shisui, tell me."

It's important that both students engage in the conversation this deepens their sense of involvement and strengthens their emotional connection to the lesson.

"No, because the power imbalance would have been too overwhelming. It would have made the other clans feel deeply insecure."

"Even if they joined the Senju-led village, it wouldn't have been a democratic Konoha it would have been a hereditary one dominated by a single clan."

"And such a version of Konoha wouldn't have had the same scale or strength as the Konoha co-founded by both Senju and Uchiha. Without mutual checks, the village could never withstand external threats."

"Also, this kind of Konoha would be very fragile. The underlying resentments would remain buried, and if the Senju ever lost their overwhelming power, the village would collapse into civil war."

Gen Uchiha gave Shisui an approving glance and said, "You've improved again, Shisui. Well said."

Hearing his older brother praised, Uchiha Itachi looked at Shisui with admiration and longing.

By now, young Uchiha Itachi had developed deep respect for Uchiha Gen not just as a shinobi, but as a learned and thoughtful man whose understanding of history ran deep.

"Back then, when Madara was defeated, he didn't beg for mercy or surrender. He chose to leave Konoha with dignity and disappeared. What changed everything was the sincerity shown by Senju Hashirama."

"If instead, Hashirama had chosen conquest had absorbed or destroyed the Uchiha what do you think would have happened?"

"Absorbing them would've bred silent resentment and bitter hearts. And when the Senju later encountered trouble, the Uchiha would've undoubtedly retaliated."

"And when the other clans and nobles saw that only the Senju wielded real power, wouldn't that breed deep fear?"

"Before Konoha's founding, the two great clans balanced each other. That balance gave the smaller clans breathing room a space to survive between giants."

"If the Senju clan were to dominate Konoha unchecked, the living space of other ninja clans would undoubtedly shrink rapidly. If they refused to become subordinate, their only remaining fate might be destruction."

"For the nobles of the Land of Fire, letting the Senju clan reign unchallenged is far from ideal."

"Their ability to negotiate and exert influence would gradually erode. After all, no existing clan at the time had the power to rival the Senju, especially with Senju Hashirama's Wood Release and Sage Mode."

"And once the Senju clan becomes too powerful, wouldn't the daimyos eventually worry that the Senju might rebel against them or replace their authority altogether?"

"Even if Senju Hashirama swore never to harm them, would the nobles truly believe him, given the deeply ingrained hierarchy and distrust in this world?"

Nobles, after all, are not known for mercy. As history has shown, they'd rather destroy ten thousand by mistake than let a single potential threat go free.

"I think their paranoia makes it inevitable."

"And if that happens if both the nobles and the weaker ninja clans find common interest they will unite to suppress the Senju clan."

"If the Senju submits, they'll be suppressed indefinitely by this alliance until they are manageable, no longer a threat."

"And if the opportunity arises, the nobles may even try to eliminate the Senju entirely."

"This would create space for the remaining clans to grow, regain political balance, and allow the nobles to reclaim control over the shinobi."

"If the Senju refuses to be suppressed, then full-scale war would be inevitable one side would have to be completely destroyed."

"If the Senju loses, they'll almost certainly face extermination. We know how the Warring States Period treated defeated clans."

"And even if the Senju wins say, by relying on Hashirama's overwhelming power how many of their clansmen would survive such a war of attrition?"

"And once Senju Hashirama dies, those harboring resentment against their reign would undoubtedly rise up. Without Hashirama's strength and moral authority, the Senju clan wouldn't stand a chance against the combined hostility of nobles and remaining ninja clans."

"In any scenario, the Senju's ultimate fate would be grim..."

Glancing at Shisui and Itachi, who were fully engrossed in the analysis, Gen Uchiha swallowed hard. Internally, he regretted not bringing any water.

If he hadn't drunk a bottle of juice earlier, his throat might have dried out from all this explaining.

"But if the Uchiha were destroyed instead, the consequences would be even worse."

"First of all, Senju Hashirama was never overwhelmingly stronger than Uchiha Madara. If he were, the two clans wouldn't have been locked in a bitter rivalry for so many years."

It's true that Hashirama eventually defeated Madara at the Valley of the End, but the manga and even the databooks clearly indicate their strength was nearly equal.

"If we treat Hashirama's battle power as 10,000, then Madara's was at least 9,900."

"It's not like I'm saying I'm 6,000 and he's 10,000. It was a clash of titans."

"So even if the Senju clan defeated the Uchiha in an all-out war, it would be a pyrrhic victory. The cost would be staggering."

"And do you think the other clans would allow the weakened Senju to recover and become dominant again?"

"Itachi, what do you think?"

Time for the usual method engage the student directly.

"No!" Uchiha Itachi answered firmly.

"You're absolutely right no way they'd allow it."

"Exactly. Even in victory, the Senju would circle right back to the scenario I described earlier facing suspicion, fear, and rebellion."

"And the pressure would only intensify. After seeing what happened to the Uchiha, the other clans would be more desperate than ever to preserve themselves."

"The entire point of this explanation is to make you realize how essential the Uchiha clan was in creating balance and legitimacy in Konoha."

"Yes, the Senju clan contributed more to the founding of the village, but the Uchiha also committed themselves offering manpower, military power, and structure."

"To be clear, the Senju are the acknowledged leaders in Konoha, but we are second only to them."

"Do you agree with that conclusion?"

Shisui and Itachi paused in thought, looked at each other, and answered together: "Agree."

"Now that the Senju are in decline, I hope the Uchiha clan can someday rise to lead—and achieve glory beyond anything in the past!"

"Make the Uchiha clan great again. Not just great greater than ever before. What do you think of that dream?"

Shisui smiled with conviction and said: "That's a truly noble dream. I'm with you!"

Itachi replied with unwavering eyes: "Brother Xuan, I think... I've found the purpose of my life."

Oh?

This was an unexpected gain...

Of course, some might say this is manipulation. But unless you're doing harm, inspiring belief isn't a sin. If others don't like it—they're free to disagree.
