Chapter 17 - chapter 17 -Surprise

In the surveillance room, Tadashi woke up after losing consciousness.

Tadashi: "What happened?"

He felt a sharp pain in his head, but decided to go out and search for Ayano anyway.

He went straight to the ground floor. Each time he descended stairs, he quickly checked the entire hallway but found no one.

When he reached the lower floor, he found a message on his team's table. Reading it made Tadashi furious.

...

Gurin: "Are you sure about this?"

Shouta: "Of course. He won't do anything."

Gurin: "What if he ignores the threat and keeps playing?"

Shouta: "Even if he does, I've collected 26 points here. We can just go down and place them. We're already ahead."

The message read: "Place another dice and we'll kill the girl."

Shouta: "Let's move."

Gurin: "Where to?"

Shouta: "Third floor."

Shouta walked ahead while Gurin followed, carrying Ayano's unconscious body.

Gurin: "Why this floor specifically?"

Shouta: "This is where they both started. I noticed all traps were disabled except one here."

There was a slightly discolored floor tile.

Gurin: "What kind of trap is this?"

Shouta: "Don't know. But since Tadashi left it deliberately, I assume it's lethal. We'll wait here. He can't reach upper floors while we're watching the stairs. He also can't collect enough points from just the first two floors. Even if he tries, I have contingencies."

Gurin: "You've planned everything..."

Shouta: "yeah. Now we wait."

Gurin placed Ayano on the floor and they both sat in the middle of the hallway, each watching one direction as they waited.

Minutes later, Tadashi appeared - but from the opposite side of the trap, meaning he could reach them safely.

Tadashi stood motionless, staring at the ground. Both Gurin and Shouta immediately stood ready for any tricks.

Tadashi began slowly walking forward, still looking down.

Shouta: "Get ready."

He gradually accelerated into a sprint toward them.

Gurin: "Have you lost your mind?"

Gurin prepared to attack, but when they were inches apart, the lights suddenly cut out, plunging everyone into darkness.

Shouta felt something touching his pockets in the dark and immediately tried to push it away.

Shouta: "Don't touch me!"

When the lights returned, Tadashi had vanished.

Gurin: "Did he steal the dice?"

Shouta: "No, I still have them all."

Gurin: "What now?"

Shouta: "We still have the girl and our pieces. We wait."

Meanwhile on the floor, Ayano was struggling while pretending to be unconscious.

Ayano: "Damn it... if they realize I'm awake they might attack me again... They discovered the trap we left deliberately. This could backfire... What do I do?"

They both sat back down, each watching one end of the hallway.

Gurin: "Tell me why you want him dead so badly."

Shouta: "If we win normally, people will say we only won because Tadashi had a weak partner. If we kill him ourselves, no one will dare challenge us."

Gurin: "So this is for reputation."

Shouta: "Exactly."

Shouta then noticed a broken light fixture in the ceiling.

Shouta: "Hmm?"

When he looked back down the hallway, Tadashi was standing there again - this time on the trapped side.

He repeated the same movements: looking down, moving slowly, then sprinting toward them.

Again the lights cut out, but this time Shouta pulled out a flashlight and blinded Tadashi with it. Gurin seized the opportunity to deliver a powerful punch that sent Tadashi stumbling backward - right onto the trap.

The floor suddenly launched upward, smashing him against the ceiling. Blood sprayed everywhere.

When the lights returned, both Shouta and Gurin froze at the sight. Even Ayano stood up, no longer needing to pretend.

Tadashi's body had been crushed.

A silent moment that screamed louder than any noise.

Gurin: "He's dead..."

Shouta: "I can't believe it... I killed Tadashi... I did it! I won!"

The referee's voice echoed through all floors:

Referee: "Five minutes remaining in the round."

Shouta: "That's enough. Let's go."

Gurin: "What about the girl?"

Shouta: "We've won. Leave her."

Ayano remained frozen in shock, standing before the trap like an empty shell. She stayed there until the five minutes ended.

Referee: "Time's up. All players return to the ground floor."

The referee's voice briefly snapped her back to reality. Ayano walked to the ground floor to face her fate.

On the ground floor, the three finally gathered.

Referee: "Now we tally the scores."

As the referee calculated, Ayano's fear grew with each second.

Referee: "The results are clear. The winners are Ayano and Tadashi's team."

A massive shockwave hit everyone.

Shouta: "WHAT?!"

Gurin: "Don't you f***ing mess with me!"

Ayano: "HUH?"

From behind one of the tables, Tadashi revealed himself to everyone.

Tadashi: "Hey, miss me?"
