Cherreads

Chapter 9 - Cafe Competitions

Hearing steps coming near their table, David opened his eyes again and saw a female server walking their way. She wore a neat black uniform and a white apron. Her hair was walnut brown, as well as her eyes.

In contrast to the other servers, she didn't wear a mob cap, symbolizing that she likely wasn't one of the lower servants but had some importance here.

"Good morning, what should it be for the gentlemen?" She pulled out a notebook from one of the pockets of her black dress uniform.

That was the moment David realized he should have read the menu instead of silently philosophizing around in his eyes.

A bit helpless, he looked in Theo's direction, but Theo had already prepared what he wanted to say and ignored his friend's call for help.

"I'll be taking the white bread with bacon and eggs. As for beverages, I'd be satisfied if I'd just get some milk. I hope that is okay?" Theo said in a polite tone, like he practiced it every time before the mirror.

'It seems I'll go with the last resort strategy I always use if I haven't read the menu.' David bit into his lip as he mentally prepared himself for his turn.

"And what is with the other gentleman?" The woman turned her head to the left, where David sat.

Already sitting in the perfect position every professional sitter could just dream of, David felt fully prepared.

"I'll be taking the same." David mimicked the tone of Theo when he spoke to the server.

Theo stared at him with a deadpan expression, which could only mean one thing. You dare use my own spells against me, Potter?

David smiled back with an angel-like smile. Polite, unsuspicious, and definitely not guilty. It was almost pitiable.

"Alright. If this was everything, then I am wishing you a good time, and your food will come soon." The server smiled in David's direction.

David couldn't help but change his smile to a triumphant one and say in his mind.

'Round 1: David one and Theo zero.'

Theo's mind harbored a single thought.

'I am never inviting him back here again. This was the last time.'

Theo grumbled but quickly came to terms with it, as it wasn't even the first time this happened when they were going out together.

Slowly switching his smile back into a neutral expression a gentleman should have, David closed his eyes again until the food came. He didn't have much to do either way since they couldn't speak.

It didn't take up much time to wait for the food, as they both ordered rather simple food.

However, this time the food was brought by another server, and they weren't able to play the same game again.

After having eaten and paid, both of them stood up and pushed their chairs to the table.

"Do you want to still walk around for a bit? Digestion?" David suggested it, and Theo didn't have much reason to refuse it. Therefore, they did exactly that.

Now walking around in the streets of Backlund, they asked each other some daily questions.

"What do you have to do today? What are your plans?" David tried to discover some things about his friend.

"I'll just have to get a clock for my boss. Nothing more. But you definitely have some things to do. For example, you could pay me back as soon as possible when you get a new job." Theo countered with a question back.

For a moment David thought about the answer of his friend, but then decided that it isn't worth it to take his answer too seriously.

"I'd first have to get a new job, you know? I think that will be hard enough," he said in a clear voice while looking into the sky. "

"That isn't necessarily a problem. I know some people who would have no problems taking you in for one." Theo said while continuing to walk along the sidewalk.

David raised an eyebrow at Theo, who didn't change his expression when walking.

'It seems he doesn't intend to lie.' David contemplated that and came to a conclusion.

While kicking the gray stone in front of him, he gave an answer to Theo.

"Thank you. I'll consider it if I look around and no one wants me to do a job. I appreciate it, though."

Looking at him as if to test him, Theo tried to guess his friend's thoughts but didn't get to a satisfactory conclusion.

"Do it however you want. Just don't come crying to me, saying you didn't find anything." Theo made a small grin while saying that, as if to mock him.

Absolutely ignoring what Theo said, David switched immediately to his next question.

Turning his head to Theo, he asked with a neutral face.

"Do you know where the Sparebeer bar is?" David queried as he continued staring at Theo.

Theo's left eyebrow twitched. Maybe it is his sign of surprise, David speculated.

"Northeast of the East Borough, Wind Cloke Street. I won't ask you what your business is being there, but be warned. There is a rumor about more and more people suddenly getting lost, and I am not talking about the kind of lost where one can find their way back from." Theo said while turning his back on David and beginning to walk away.

"Anyways, I need to go to that clock shop for my boss, or he'll be angry. Bye". Turning his head back to David, he smiled.

'Does he already know about the incident from yesterday? The one with Mister Settler and Miss Maria?' David wondered as he looked at the figure of his friend disappearing in the distance.

Shaking his head about his friend's weird behavior, David decided that he might as well go there now. There won't be much risk as it is day and most dangerous things need to hide themselves in the curtain of night to actually do their job effectively.

Without too many unnecessary thoughts, David made his way to the Wind Cloke Street.
