Chika Fujiwara's face flushed. Her romantic imagination was in overdrive; Renz's words radiated a charm far beyond what she'd ever imagined. Initially, she'd thought he was a dense, straight-laced guy. But now, she realized he was no ordinary man—he was playing at a super-god tier level!
Yet, Renz didn't stop there. "I know saying something like this over the phone is incredibly stupid, but my desire to be with you has never changed," he said, his voice earnest.
"I haven't formally confessed to you, and I can't even give you a wedding ring right now. I know I have many flaws, but I swear, everything you want, I will make up for it in the future. I will give you my absolute best."
In that moment, Renz realized how powerless words could be. He couldn't fully express his emotions, but he desperately wanted Erina to believe him. For a woman, the most cherished moment is undoubtedly putting on a wedding dress. If he went to the district office to register their marriage now, without the blessings of others and before he could afford a proper wedding, he wouldn't be able to fulfill Erina's dream.
This was a selfish decision on Renz's part, but it was necessary.
---
On the other end of the phone, Erina remained silent.
A profound, wordless silence.
It deepened Renz's anxiety. It seems… I failed.
As expected, it wasn't going to work. Erina's greatest desire was a grand wedding, wasn't it? After all, they had jumped straight into the future, and the absence of a wedding had always been her regret. Now, back in the present, Renz knew that if he simply waited, everything would eventually fall into place. They could have a perfect wedding at the best possible time, even with the blessings of all their friends and family.
But Renz had made this proposal prematurely, before all the necessary elements were in place—a "barebones" marriage, made without any preparation. Even his confession was a "perfunctory" phone call. It was completely normal to be rejected. More than normal, Renz thought to himself.
"Hello? Are you still listening?" Erina's voice came from the other end, terrifyingly calm. "Though I don't know what's happened…"
"But, judging by your attitude, there must be a reason why you absolutely have to do this."
"Mm."
"It still makes me quite angry."
"But, what can I do? I chose a man who's stubborn to a fault, a man who always has his own reasons for everything he does. He probably wouldn't make a decision like this unless it was absolutely necessary, especially since there are better options."
"Right now, I'm a little annoyed."
"Say one thing that satisfies me, and then let's go to the district office tonight."
Erina spoke slowly on the phone. No matter what Renz said, she would agree. However, Renz would definitely bear full responsibility for this hasty decision. So, Renz couldn't just placate her. Later, Erina would find an opportunity to "kick this scoundrel."
---
One thing? What one thing could satisfy Erina?
"I love you?" Or "I like you?" That sounded common, clichéd, even perfunctory. Renz's mind raced. He thought it over and decided that the simplest, most direct approach was best for him.
By the phone, Renz's lips moved slightly. "Didn't you say I'm a stubborn man?"
"Well, now…"
"This stubborn man has chosen you."
Simple. Incredibly simple, so much so that others might not grasp its profound meaning.
"You idiot!" Erina 'cursed' him from the other end of the phone. "Can't you do anything worthwhile besides clinging to me every day?"
"This idiot's most worthwhile accomplishment in this life is clinging to you," Renz continued, riding on her words. "I love you, I love you the most. No one loves you more than I do!"
"Idiot, stop saying such cringe-worthy things, okay?" Erina's voice slowly grew louder. Renz's first sentence had shattered her tough exterior.
"About the marriage…"
"I agree."
"Let's go to the district office later tonight. Make sure you have all the paperwork ready on your end."
"Don't you dare mess up."
"I can handle things on my family's side."
"At worst, we'll elope."
---
Agreed? Agreed?!! Renz had thought his unprepared actions would be completely unappealing from Erina's perspective. But he never imagined that even under these circumstances, Erina would say yes.
"My wife! You're the best!" Renz shouted into the phone.
"You're a grown man, can't you stop acting like a child and be so excited?" Erina's voice on the other end returned to its calm tone. Then, she took a deep breath. Her heart pounded. It had been a long time since she felt such a thrill.
"I'll close the shop immediately and get the paperwork ready!" Renz continued.
"Then I'll hang up now," Erina said, ending the call before Renz could reply. From her dorm room drawer, she retrieved a guardian's consent form. While her grandfather, Senzaemon Nakiri, was drunk, she'd pretended it was a school activity document and had him sign it. This was her worst-case scenario, in case her family opposed the marriage. With this document, eloping wouldn't be an issue.
---
Meanwhile, Renz let out a long breath. When he turned around, he found everyone in the restaurant staring at him. Oh no. While on the phone, he must have unknowingly raised his voice during the crucial parts, disturbing everyone. How embarrassing! That whole act.
Then, Chika Fujiwara clapped her hands, a knowing smile on her face. At this, the other customers also smiled.
"Congratulations, young man, on your marriage!"
"Happy wedding!"
Someone even whistled, clearly teasing him. Renz bowed slightly. "My deepest apologies for disturbing everyone. Tonight's meals are on me. You don't have to pay."
"Really? Then I'll have two servings!" Chika Fujiwara raised her hand, proclaiming. "Here's ten thousand yen, consider it a wedding gift!"
"No, no, that's too kind!" Renz hadn't expected his student council peer to be so enthusiastic.
"Don't be shy. Please, make sure to invite me to the wedding," Chika Fujiwara said with a smile.
"The wedding is still a long way off. We're just registering first. The wedding will only happen when I'm truly ready," Renz said with a hearty laugh. "When that day comes, my wife will be the cutest person in the world!"
Chika Fujiwara's smile instantly froze. What is this inexplicable feeling of annoyance from being shown off to? They had just confirmed their intention to marry, and he was already flaunting it?! However, seeing Renz's hearty laugh, Chika Fujiwara's annoyance subsided. Wait, this means I can use this news to tease the other student council members tomorrow, right?
Thinking that, she wasn't angry at all anymore.
