Miki Shibasaki glanced at the ages on the documents, lost in thought. Both individuals were very young and required legal guardian consent forms. In recent years, due to Japan's low-desire society, fewer people were getting married. Especially in Tokyo's urban areas, the average age for marriage was steadily climbing. For people this young to come in for marriage procedures, it usually meant they were childhood sweethearts. However, even now, it was rare to see couples this young registering for marriage.
Seventeen.
That's too young! Are young people these days so crazy? Could it be a shotgun wedding? Miki Shibasaki couldn't help but imagine, unable to think of any other reason for such a young marriage.
"Do you have all the necessary paperwork?" Miki Shibasaki said after a moment of silence. Marriage was a right for young people. The fact that they were here meant they had prepared themselves mentally. As a staff member, he didn't need to overthink it.
"For minors, a guardian's consent form is required," Miki Shibasaki reminded them. "Without this consent form, registration isn't possible."
Obtaining a marriage certificate was relatively easy. However, after registration, there was much more to do to organize a proper wedding. The primary task was the wedding itself, which often included witnesses. Most of the time, these witnesses were relatives of both parties. Of course, if family relations weren't ideal, the wedding witnesses could be other individuals, which wasn't strictly enforced.
However, when the wedding was held often depended on the couple's wishes. Generally, once the certificate was obtained, the marriage was legally effective. Whether a wedding was held or not, they were nominally husband and wife. Some couples would register and then hold a wedding a year or two later. There were even a few cases where, due to financial issues, couples would only register and not hold a wedding, though these were rare.
Renz and Erina simultaneously presented their guardian consent forms. Miki Shibasaki quickly scanned them, placed the documents in a paper folder, and then handed them a blank form. Renz required more documentation since he was a foreign national.
"Please fill in your personal information," Miki Shibasaki instructed.
When both had completed the forms, Miki Shibasaki pulled out two blessing cards from behind the counter and smiled. "Congratulations to the newlyweds."
In Japan, district offices typically offered gifts as blessings for marriages. Different regions gave different presents; some gave potted plants, some fruit, and blessing cards were also a common form. Since fewer people were marrying these days, the government actively encouraged it. After filling out the form and getting the district office's stamp, the two would be legally married. In Japan, marriage was truly that simple. Registration was quick, with legal procedures swiftly completed.
Getting married at this age, how wonderful, Miki Shibasaki mused to himself.
"By the way, are you that God's Tongue, Erina?" Miki Shibasaki asked with a puzzled expression. He was older and had trouble recognizing faces, but seeing the name and similar appearance, he couldn't help but ask.
"Mm," Erina nodded.
"And you, are you the chef from the last God's Tongue judging?" Miki Shibasaki then shifted his gaze to Renz.
"Yes," Renz said, scratching his head.
"Didn't you say you had a girlfriend?" Miki Shibasaki asked, looking confused.
"His girlfriend is me," Erina retorted, pouting slightly. "But it's not convenient to talk about our relationship."
"After all, only someone who can satisfy the God's Tongue can marry the God's Tongue," Erina added, clearly wanting to prevent any further misunderstanding from Miki Shibasaki.
"Indeed, it's also thanks to Miss Erina's help that my cooking has progressed so rapidly," Renz said, seeing Erina elevating him, and returned the compliment.
"So, does that mean your behavior on the show was a public display of affection?" Miki Shibasaki asked teasingly.
"No!" Erina denied flatly.
"Yes, I simply wanted to praise my wife," Renz said with a gentle smile.
"Can you say less?" Erina glared fiercely at Renz, then immediately said, "I have things to do when I get back, let's go."
With that, Erina pulled her hood back up and turned to leave. Why does Renz always contradict her? Is he always going to go against her?
Renz was about to say a few more words but saw Erina's determined stance. He could only apologize to Miki Shibasaki, then turned and said, "Why are you walking so fast? Wait for me."
Erina stopped. "Your tone of voice is disgusting," she said, her cheeks flushed, frowning slightly. "Can you please not say such sappy things every time and embarrass me?"
"Is that so? I'll keep that in mind next time," Renz nodded.
The two walked side by side, already out of the district office doors.
"By the way, the district office people won't go tell your grandfather, will they?" Renz asked.
"Do you think that's possible? Is it my grandfather getting married, or me?" Erina sighed softly. "You need to understand that each department has its own job. In Japan, they don't overstep their boundaries and do unnecessary things. Registering marriages is the district office's business, and since our documents were all in order, they won't do anything extra." Erina retorted, "Haven't you noticed this even after living in Japan for so long?"
Renz nodded. Indeed. This phenomenon was very pronounced in Japan. Doing one's own job well and refraining from meddling in others' affairs had almost become a social norm.
"And, we're registered now, but the wedding and such haven't been held yet. You, remember to give me the best wedding," Erina said, walking ahead, her voice warning. "If you dare to displease me, don't blame me for not being nice."
"And... also..." Erina bit her pink lip. "For our life together from now on, please take care of me." Saying this, her voice involuntarily softened as she bowed slightly towards Renz.
Renz gazed at Erina's incredibly delicate face, her shy expression blooming like a bud. He too bowed slightly.
"For our life together from now on, please take care of me once again, Erina."
Author's Explanation:
To clarify a reader's question from before: As long as the provided documents are in order, the district office won't interfere. With guardian consent forms already in place, asking further questions would be redundant and outside their scope of work. Furthermore, when registering a marriage, whether in the Philippines or Japan, there's no need for a witness during registration; only the man and woman need to be present. Witnesses typically appear at the wedding ceremony.
Renz's thoughts changed multiple times overnight. I had previously laid subtle groundwork: initially, Renz didn't want to get married because he didn't want to alter the birth of his children. Now, he wants to marry not to complete the full wedding process but simply to establish a nominal marital relationship. Changes at the school, potentially leading to complications, left Renz with no choice but to try an experimental solution. Marital registration, in itself, wouldn't change the birth of his children, which is why Renz opted for this approach.
As the author, I have an omniscient perspective and more information, so my understanding might differ slightly from yours. However, the simulator isn't so easily tricked or defeated.
