Chapter 8 - Marriage Contract

"Oh," Killian replied, his tone calm but pointed. "So you do know something."

Hailey became silent, realizing she'd let her tongue slip.

"Look, I understand that you're scared but it's obvious you know something. Mr. Silbetto is actually a shareholder at my company and I only want justice. If you tell me everything, then I promise you security and protection so the real criminals won't get a hold of you," he said.

Hailey didn't know if she should trust him, and although there was harm in trying, she decided to speak up.

"I was in the bathroom when…" She started, her voice trembling as she narrated what she'd heard Mr. Silbetto and his killer say. When Hailey remembered his face, dread gnawed at her skin once again. She didn't think she would be able to forget his face. "I was able to peek through the bathroom door and saw a viper tattoo on his wrist."

Killian watched her. The news report stated that no evidence was captured in the CCTV camera which was even more suspicious. Everything had been wiped. However, one thing lingered in Killian's mind.

'Who could have given intel on Mr. Silbettos's whereabouts?' Whoever it was would have surely added he came with a woman but since Hailey was alive, it meant they didn't know about it. Either way, they were going to find out sooner than later and come after her.

"In that case, I want to offer you a deal," Killian said, and her eyebrows instantly furrowed in confusion.

Killian was a little hesitant but he brought up the files he'd been holding the entire time which Hailey was just seeing. She'd been so captivated by his face she didn't see it.

"This is a marriage contract, be my wife and I'll be keep you protected while the police find out Mr. Silbetto's murderer," he offered.

Hailey's jaws dropped in shock. She waited a few seconds in case he was joking, but he stared at her so blankly she couldn't tell the difference between him and a sheet of paper.

When he was still quiet, she said, "You can't be serious. We don't even know each other."

"We can get to know each other through marriage," he replied. Hailey was stunned. He was really serious.

To think her life couldn't get any worse.

"B-but I'm married," she replied. She'd just been divorced two days ago. She wasn't going to jump into another one like some kangaroo. Besides, she didn't know Killian. He was basically a stranger.

Killian cocked an eyebrow at her. He sighed before he fetched his phone from one of his pockets and showed her something.

His phone screen lit with a headline.

ENGAGED: Blake Lancaster and Kaira Monroe Make It Official

"That's your husband and sister, am I right?" He didn't wait for her to respond. "They just announced their engagement to the public."

Hailey's heart clenched. She'd told herself multiple times not to cry for them anymore, but the hurt was still there. As much as she wanted to recover from it and move on, she still felt the urge to cry.

They didn't care about where she was. Not once did Blake contact her asking about Aiden or probably changing his mind and finally deciding to pay for his medical bills.

Hailey's hand flew to her chest as she forced her saliva down her throat, but it felt like she had thorns that made the task so difficult.

Killian noticed her movement and the tears that brimmed in the corners of her eyes. While Hailey had been asleep, he'd asked Eduardo to do his findings on her because there was no way the daughter in law of a powerful family could be stripping herself in the club to get a client. Turned out she was divorced, thrown out and her son was in the hospital diagnosed with an illness.

She seemed to be a selfless person with the fact that she was willing to go through such lengths just to save her son's life. But Killian was one to know that selflessness could land people in the biggest trouble, just like the one she was currently in.

Not only that, she could make the perfect candidate for a wife better than the woman his father was pushing to him.

"Just because I'm divorced doesn't mean I will just sign a marriage contract with you," she said, glaring at him. This wasn't like in those novels she read back in high school. This was real life.

Killian knew he was going to go through all this dialogue so he came prepared.

"Mr Silbetto was killed in an hotel and no one knows about it except you. Not even the security guards or the receptionists have a clue unless they were a part of it. You're just one person. You don't even know who you're going to be dealing with. Let's not even add that you have a son. It's either they come after you or come after your son. You can't ask for help from either your family or your ex husband, because I believe we both know how that's going to end. I need a wife until I can replace my father as the CEO of our family, and in return, I'll keep you safe until the criminal is caught and might help you if you plan on getting back at your husband for cheating on you."

The way he said things so easily without stuttering only made her wonder if that was what he did whenever he almost runs a girl over and brings them to his house—holding a marriage contract in his hands and ready to deliver a convincing dialogue.

Either way, she couldn't deny he was right. She had no idea who she could be dealing with. She had Aiden, the only one she had left to live for. If anything ever happened to him, she doesn't know how she would be able to take it.

"I'll need to think about it," she said, looking straight at him as her breath caught in her throat.
