“Are you going somewhere, Liliette? You’re wearing one of those fancy wide-brimmed hats that adults like,” the red-haired boy remarked, stopping at the doorway.
Though his clothes were smeared with dirt, there was an unmistakable aura of nobility surrounding him. The wooden sword in his hand, crafted from rare redwood, hinted at his status, as did his fine-quality tunic and trousers. They were worn and tattered, but they were garments most commoners would never even glimpse.
Liliette, who was leaning over the cradle with her back to the window, looked up. The wide brim of her hat slid down, and she pushed it back with a small, silk-gloved hand.
“Rocky! This hat is so uncomfortable. I can’t even move my neck,” she complained.
The hat, decorated with red roses and feathers, was far too elaborate for a ten-year-old. Her hair had been arranged to show her neck, and her red dress exposed her shoulders and collarbone, giving her an unexpectedly mature appearance.
