Chapter 6
Mistakes
Liliette had been feverish for three days, her breath burning like fire. At times, her body grew so hot it seemed her very mind might boil over, and her nights were spent thrashing and tossing as if locked in a brutal battle. Finally, at dawn, her face grew calm, and Ivan sank heavily into a chair. His dirty blond hair, streaked with gray, fell messily around his tired, red-rimmed eyes.
“The fever should be gone now,” he muttered, rubbing his eyes. “But she’s lost a lot of strength. She’ll need to rest for a while when she wakes up.”
“How long will she need?” Vlad asked, his voice rougher than usual.
“Well, if we’re just talking about her physical strength, she could be up and about by tomorrow. But as Your Lordship knows, her physical state isn’t the only concern here.”
Ivan didn’t need to see Vlad’s face to see his worry. Vlad hadn’t left Liliette’s bedside for the full three days.
