Episode 35: Override Protocol
---
Beneath the charred ruins of the Nexus compound, buried deep within a sublayer unknown even to D7, something stirred.
Inside a cold chamber filled with humming servers and biometric scanners, a retinal sensor blinked green. A hidden vault slid open with a hiss of pressurized air.
A man stepped into the light.
Pale. Scarred. Eyes burning with vengeance.
The final ghost of Ghost Net.
Project Override was awake.

15 Miles Away — Safehouse Omega
Julian stood before a board pinned with maps, data sheets, and a growing list of corrupt names tied to the Nexus network. Each thread they pulled unraveled deeper rot — government officials, arms dealers, media moguls.
"These names," Eve said, pacing, "They're not just collaborators. Some built Ghost Net."
Carter tapped the side of a satellite phone. "And they're regrouping. We just intercepted a relay. Lucian's not done."
Julian clenched his fists. "He initiated Protocol Zeta. That means full wipe — their ops, their people. They'll erase everything and everyone who ever worked with them... or against them."
"Which makes us priority targets," Eve muttered.
Julian nodded. "Then we hit first."

Elsewhere — Abandoned Metro Line 7
The tunnel reeked of damp stone and rust. Three former Ghost Net agents moved quietly, flashlights slicing through the dark.
"Why here?" one whispered. "We're supposed to be regrouping in Geneva."
The lead agent held up a hand. "This is where the override signal was last traced. There's something beneath the city Nexus didn't want found."
Suddenly—
A high-pitched tone.
One by one, their flashlights flickered, then died.
Then came the whirring of gears. Metallic footsteps.
A red lens blinked to life in the shadows.
They turned to run—
And never made it.

Safehouse Omega — Control Room
Reese stirred. His bandages were fresh, but pain still clung to every movement.
Julian stood over him. "You're lucky. Another second and we'd have lost you."
Reese coughed. "Feels like I lost half my ribs."
"You did," Eve called from across the room, holding up a tray of gear. "But we kept the important parts. Like your mouth. Sadly."
Reese smirked faintly. "Guess I'm not done saving the world."
Julian handed him a tablet. "No. You're not. Because this... this just came in."
Reese blinked as the screen showed a red symbol.
One word.
Override.
"Someone's reactivating the old systems. But it's not Lucian," Julian said.
Carter added, "We traced the signal to a forgotten black site. No name. No record. Deep underground, off the books even for Ghost Net."
Julian turned to Reese. "Feel like going for a little walk?"
He groaned, pushing himself up. "Only if there's coffee after."

Far Below Ground — Black Site Theta
The man stepped forward, cloak brushing against frost-covered metal.
The mainframe's AI voice hummed softly:
> "Welcome back, Operator Zero."
His hand hovered over a console.
Dozens of sleeper agents—coded and stored for years—lit up across the globe.
He spoke just one word.
"Execute."

Back at Safehouse Omega
An alert sounded.
Eve looked up. "We've got movement."
Carter leaned in. "Multiple signals. Simultaneous activation in twelve countries. Something's coming online."
Julian exhaled slowly. "Override's not just a failsafe..."
Reese's eyes narrowed. "It's a second war."
