15 Miles: The Heist

Episode 54: The Fall or the Flight
---
Julian's boots skidded across the cracked concrete floor as bullets tore through the air like metal rain. Eve ducked behind a toppled console, breath ragged, her knuckles white around the drive. The entire chamber trembled under the weight of chaos — gunfire, smoke, the thundering roar of the extraction chopper hovering just beyond reach.
The Ghost Net squad advanced with military precision, faceless behind sleek visors. Julian knew from the cold gleam of their weapons: these men weren't here to capture — only kill.
"Cover me!" he shouted, diving behind a beam as he fired back.
Eve nodded, eyes fierce despite the fear twisting her gut. She sprang up, unleashing a flurry of shots that drove the first wave back just enough.
"We can't hold them long!" she yelled over the din. "We need that exit open!"
Reese's voice crackled through the comm — strained, but alive. "I'm still here. Looping back. Give me ten seconds!"
Julian smirked grimly. "You've got five."
---
Outside, the chopper pilot tightened his grip on the controls, circling low. "Visual on targets," he radioed. "But extraction zone is compromised."
"Hold your position," Reese ordered. "I'm clearing the LZ."
He stormed through a parallel corridor, leaving a trail of downed agents in his wake. His arm was bloodied, and he'd lost his helmet, but nothing slowed him. Not now. Not when everything hinged on this.
"Reese!" Eve called. "Skylight is our only shot!"
"I see it!" he shouted, breaching the chamber with a smoke grenade and fury in his eyes.
---
For a heartbeat, everything was smoke, shadow, and light — a frozen second where time held its breath.
Then Reese hurled a shock disk toward the far wall. It exploded with a thunderous blast, collapsing the entrance and burying half the Ghost Net squad in debris.
Julian grabbed Eve's hand. "Now!"
They sprinted together, racing toward the lift that led to the roof. Footsteps thundered behind them, but Reese turned, shielding their escape.
"You go!" he barked. "I'll hold them!"
"Reese—" Eve started.
"GO!"
Julian didn't argue. He dragged her up the stairs just as the lift cables groaned under the strain of sudden movement.
---
The rooftop was chaos.
Wind howled. The chopper's blades whipped up dust and ash. Floodlights painted the roof in ghostly hues.
The pilot yelled through the headset, "We've got 30 seconds! That's all!"
Julian shoved Eve toward the open hatch. She hesitated only once — looking back at the smoke where Reese stood, a lone soldier holding the line.
"I'll come back for him," she whispered.
Julian helped her inside and turned to fire one last shot at the Ghost Net reinforcements climbing onto the roof.
Then, as the last bullet left his gun, the chopper lifted off.
---
From the air, the city looked like a war zone. Fires dotted the streets, and sirens wailed in the distance. The data drive rested safely in Eve's hands, but silence weighed heavily over them.
"Do you think he made it?" she whispered.
Julian didn't answer. He couldn't.
Because sometimes, hope was too dangerous to carry.

To be continued…
🔥 Will Reese survive? Can Eve and Julian get the truth out before Lucian shuts it all down? The war is far from over.
