Chapter 16 - The welcome party

---

A soft breeze rustled the autumn leaves, the golden light of the late afternoon streaming through the open window of the cozy living room. Mia sat on the sofa, flipping through a photo album. Liv sat next to her, leaning in to point at the various pictures, each one telling a piece of their shared history. In the corner of the room lay the old phone of her late sister, Nia, which Liv had found tucked away in a drawer when they were sorting through the old memories. It had been a long time since Nia's death, but something about the phone had felt like a key—like it would open something long-buried.

Mia looked at the screen, the images frozen in time. It was strange, how much of Nia's life had revolved around her. Nearly every picture in the gallery was of Liv and Mia, side by side, or Nia gazing at them with such a genuine, comforting expression. But there was something else—a deep, unspoken connection between her and Nia, something Mia couldn't place until now. She had always known that Nia and Liv shared a unique bond, but seeing the pictures made her feel as if she were staring into her own face from another time.

"I can't believe how much we looked alike," Mia whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Liv smiled softly, brushing a loose strand of hair behind Mia's ear. "Yes, you do. It's like seeing Nia again."

There was a heaviness in Liv's voice, the kind that only came when she spoke about her late sister. It was clear that Liv still carried the weight of that loss. She had made peace with it over the years, but the void left by Nia's death was still something that lingered, like an old scar that would never fully fade.

As the days passed, Liv told Mia countless stories about her late sister. Stories about Nia's childhood, the moments of mischief, the struggles, and triumphs they shared as sisters. It was through these stories that Mia began to understand the depth of the love Nia had for Liv—and the love Liv had for her sister.

One afternoon, as they walked to Nia's grave—an annual ritual Liv had kept since the day Nia had passed—Mia felt a strange sensation. The place was quiet, the air crisp and fresh, but there was something more. It was as if the earth beneath her feet held a quiet hum, an energy she couldn't explain.

Mia stood in front of the gravestone, her small hands clasped tightly together. She looked down at the inscription, her lips trembling. "Nia," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Liv stood behind her, her eyes closed, allowing herself a moment of solitude. Then Mia spoke again, this time with more confidence.

"It feels like... she's here," Mia said, her eyes distant. "Like she's standing beside me, patting my head." Her gaze softened, and she added, "I don't understand it, but I feel it."

Liv turned to her, her heart aching with unspoken emotions. She couldn't deny that there was something inexplicable about Mia's connection to Nia. It wasn't just the resemblance in their faces—it was something deeper, something that transcended the physical. It was as if Nia's spirit had passed on to Mia, and now they were connected in a way that defied logic.

"I know," Liv whispered. "Sometimes, I feel the same way. It's like she's still here, just... watching over us."

Mia didn't say anything more, but Liv could see the way her eyes shone with something that almost resembled peace. It was as if Mia could feel the presence of Nia, just as Liv had all these years. The familiarity of it was unsettling, yet comforting at the same time.

As the days passed, Mia began to open up more. She would tell Liv about dreams she had, vague glimpses of a past life that she couldn't fully understand. She spoke of fragments of memories—images of a life that wasn't hers, but felt intimately familiar. It was as if she was tapping into something deeper than the girl she was now, something that went beyond her five-year-old body.

"I think I was once very close to you, Mom. " Mia said one evening, as they sat on the porch, watching the sun set. "I can't explain it, but I feel like I knew you even before I met you."

Liv's heart ached at the words. She had always known that Mia had a connection to Nia, but hearing her speak it aloud made everything feel so much more real. "You're right," Liv said softly, taking Mia's hand in her own. "You and Nia were always so close. And now, I think... I think you're even closer than we realize."

Time passed, and Mia grew more and more aware of the bond she shared with Liv. As her 10th birthday approached, there was a feeling of inevitability in the air. Mia was no longer the scared, confused little girl who had wandered into Liv's life. She was starting to grow into her own person, developing her own personality, her own dreams. But that connection with Liv, that bond forged through tragedy and rebirth, remained.

One day, Ravien—Liv's eldest brother—invited them both to his home for a special occasion. It was a grand welcome party for his daughter, a celebration of new beginnings and family unity. The invitation was a surprising one, considering the distance that had grown between them since Nia's death, but Liv agreed to attend, knowing that Mia would enjoy the event.

The day of the party arrived, and the house was filled with family and friends, all gathered to celebrate the new life that Ravien's daughter represented. Liv and Mia arrived together, the latter still adjusting to the bustle of social events and the excitement of seeing her extended family.

As they entered the grand foyer, Mia's eyes widened in wonder. "Wow," she whispered, her voice filled with awe. "It's so big."

Liv smiled at her, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. "It's a lot to take in," she said, leading Mia further into the house. "But we're here to have fun, okay?"

Mia nodded eagerly, her eyes scanning the room. She hadn't been to many events like this, but the sense of belonging, of being surrounded by family, made her feel strangely at ease. It was as if she had been here before, in some other time.

Throughout the evening, Mia laughed and played with the other children, but Liv could sense the quiet undercurrent of something more. There was a stillness in Mia's eyes, a recognition of something she couldn't fully explain. As the night wore on, Mia and Liv found a quiet corner away from the festivities.

"I never thought I'd be at a party like this," Mia said quietly, her voice thoughtful. "It feels like... I'm here for a reason."

Liv looked at her with a mixture of sadness and hope. "Maybe you are," she said softly, touching Mia's cheek gently. "Maybe this is just one more part of your journey."

Later that evening, as the party wound down and the guests began to leave, Mia stood at the edge of the garden, gazing at the stars. Liv joined her, standing beside her in silence.

"I don't know if I'll ever understand all of this," Mia said after a long pause. "But I know that I'm where I'm supposed to be. With you, Mom. "

Liv squeezed her hand gently. "And I'll always be here for you, Mia. Always."

As the night drew to a close, Liv couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over her. Despite everything that had happened—despite the pain and the heartache—they were finally on the path to healing. Mia had come into her life in the most unexpected of ways, and now, as she stood beside her, Liv knew that they were both stronger for it.

The road ahead was still uncertain, but for the first time in years, Liv felt a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, the future wasn't as bleak as it had seemed before.
