Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 – Adventurer School

After taking a shower and cleaning the sweat out of him, also the orange juice, Matthew went to his bedroom and cleaned his gun. Vanessa said he also should carry a melee weapon, so tomorrow he would need to buy one and more bullets.

He then turned on his computer, and did a bit of search on the Doctor class.

Nourish was a good skill to help people who weren't able to feed themselves and also could be used as an alternative source of food in a long raid on a dungeon.

Anesthesia was commonly used around the world to do surgeries, replacing the old drugs. However, without knowledge of the nervous system, one would find trouble using it effectively. Using on himself without knowing what he was doing might put him to sleep in the middle of a fight or not have any effect at all.

Diagnosis was the most difficult one to use. All it did was to send Mana into a person and receive feedback. Like a sonar or an ultrasound. Distinguishing all the information that the skill sent back to the user required a lot of training that one could only get at an Adventurer School.

He got a difficult class. Unlike his original build idea, where most of the skills were pretty much straight forward, the Doctor had more complex uses.

He decided he would wait. If the need of one of the three skill appeared, he could chose one then.

The next day was Monday. Vanessa was going to work, so he wouldn't be seeing her in the dungeon. Although she treated him like a child the whole time, he was keen on meeting her again. He needed to do the effort not to be seen as a kid again. First thing was to open his own bank account…

He opened the internet again: "How to open a bank account?" "Which bank is the better?" "Which bank is the better for adventurers?" "How do adventurers pay taxes?"

Matthew spent the rest of the night researching.

On the morning, he met his family for breakfast. His mother was much more receptive to him. Sarah might've talked to her what he told her the night before. While eating, he questioned his father, a high level employee of a bank, what should he do to open an account and pay taxes and invest for the future, to which his father answered with a huge smile on his face.

His mother also took huge pride. Perhaps adventuring wasn't such a bad thing if he grew up so much in a single day.

Matthew took the morning to go with his father to the bank he worked for to open his account, while Sarah and their mother went to school, where the first studied and the latter taught.

Matthew spent the whole morning with his father who basic taught him everything he needed to know about his finances. After lunching together, he went back to the dungeon he was yesterday.

Near dungeons, one could find any kind of business needed for adventurers. Obviously, the best location to sell things for them. Not surprising, beside the dungeon entrance, there was a weapon store. Matthew restocked on bullets and bought a machete. He wanted a sword, but a machete was better for his level of battle experience, according to the store clerk. Another thing he could learn on an adventurer school: how to wield a sword.

The entrance of the dungeon resembled a prison. Tall walls surrounded it, with towers with guns aiming inside. At the entrance, there was a little food court plaza with a single restaurant that has snacks, burgers, hot dogs and some other food for sale. On the other side of the plaza, the entry registration office. All one needed was an ID to prove their age and the fee for the security.

After passing the entry, the dungeon door itself was sight to behold. Like the surface of a lake, in oval shape, bigger horizontally than vertically, a disc of bright blue light shimmered and oscillated like water. Entering it felt like entering water, but without getting wet.

While Matthew retied his boots, also a tip Vanessa gave him to ditch the sneakers, and tightened his protective vest, he was watching a group of about 30 people who were about to enter the dungeon. Clearly members of an adventurer school, given all of them were wearing the same uniform, light grey with green stripes.

Adventurer schools were basically college for adventurers. Once you graduated high school, you could enrol and learn how to become an adventurer. Matthew threw away the idea because of the price and also because he was convinced that his build was better than anything they could teach in the school. Looking how that boat sank, he was reconsidering the idea.

A teacher was in front of class giving instructions and warnings. He separated the students into groups of 3. Apparently, none of them had awakened yet. They were just having classes until now and was the first time they would enter a dungeon.

Matthew finished his preparations, and feeling a bit superior than the "kids" about to enter, even though they were at the same age or even older than him. That's when he heard a voice:

 "Hey you!"

It was the teacher, holding a katana on his side and a clipboard on the other, approached him quickly.

"I'm not a student!" Matthew defended himself.

The teacher laughed. He was in his mid 30s, had thin beard and short black hair. He was wearing just gym clothes and sneakers.

"It's not that kid. You just recently awakened, right?"

 "Yes…" Matthew answered suspiciously.

"I got a group with 1 short student today. I was wondering if you could go with them and help a little inside? I need to keep an eye on everybody and don't want them to go in shorthanded."

"I don't know… I was hoping to get some crystals today." Matthew said trying to evade the trouble.

"Look, I'll let you take all the crystals your group gets. All we need today is that they awaken. And also…" the teacher pointed behind him to two girls.

One of them had bright red hair at shoulder length, a short body, freckles on the cheeks and green eyes. Very cute looking, kind of innocent. The other was a slender elf, extremely beautiful, with very short silver hair spiked on front and purple eyes, just a bit shorter than Matthew himself. The red-haired was wearing a black robe on top of her uniform and held a staff with a blue crystal on top. The elf was wearing a metal breastplate over the uniform and had a bow, some arrows and a sword on her hip.

"Those are the two who need some help" The teacher concluded.

With such conditions, of course Matthew was going to agree.

"Faralynn, Erin. This is Matthew. He's a freelancer adventurer who will help you two inside." The teacher introduced him to the girls.

"We don't need a babysitter. This is the least dangerous dungeon in the world. I think we can handle it just Erin and me." The elf said without looking at Matthew at all.

"He's not going to interfere. He'll just act as a safeguard until you two awaken the system and all he's asking is the crystals of the monsters you defeat."

"Why waste those crystal in something we don't need?!" Faralynn said with disdain in her voice.

"Just do this for me, milady. You know that I can lose my job if I don't do at least this."

Erin looked to Faralynn as if asking her to cede on the matter.

"Fine." Faralynn sighted and warned Matthew with her finger pointing at him: "Don't get in our way."

The two girls went to grab their stuff that where laid on a random corner.

"Sorry about that. Faralynn is the daughter of the dean of our school. Their family, Laufgraan, were nobles in their home world and fled here after a coup d'état. She has a bad time accepting help, but she's a good girl. Be patient with her." The teacher explained to Matthew her behavior before leaving to organize all the parties.

Laufgraan Adventurer School. Matthew knew that name well. Was the biggest adventurer school in the city. Many people came from all over the world to attend it. They produced very good and renowned adventurers. They were also extremely expensive, which meant that all the people around him where very rich or extremely talented to earn a scholarship.

No wonder Erin held a magic staff and Faralynn wore such expensive items. He felt cheated. They could pay much more than 20 goblin crystals… But he already gave his word. Also, going into a dungeon with two beautiful women was a dream he had from a long time.

Thinking at it again, Vanessa was also very beautiful. Matthew felt really lucky.
