The door slammed open with a gust of dusty wind as Yu Chen rushed inside his old home. His heart thumped wildly.
"Mom… Aunt?"
He took cautious steps forward. The house smelled of smoke and blood. Broken glass crunched softly under his shoes. From the hallway, two figures emerged from the bedroom—his mother, and a tall, sharp-eyed woman standing beside her with blood-streaked sleeves.
Both bore fresh injuries from zombie fights, but they were alive.
His eyes widened.
"They survived…"
The woman beside his mother was Aunt Lin Xue, their longtime neighbor and protector. She was a police officer in the old world, known for her strength and integrity. She had helped their family during desperate times and had never married, firmly stating her hatred for selfish men.
Even the gangs feared her.
Now, in the apocalypse—she had awakened too.

"Chen! Are you safe?" she cried. "You're not injured, are you? The zombies outside… Where's your sister?"
Yu Chen stepped into her arms gently, his heart softening at her voice. He hugged her tightly—his body, hardened from evolution, now felt small in her warmth.
"I'm not injured, Mom," he said. "And Ming is safe."
He looked at her arm, where blood had soaked through a cloth. He gently held it up.
"First, let me check your wound."
The injury wasn't fatal, but deep. A wound like this in the apocalypse could be a death sentence if not treated quickly. Infection, blood loss, or simple immobility could be lethal when moving from place to place.
Yu Chen clenched his teeth.
"In this world, even a scratch can kill. But… Mom awakened with a healing ability. She's vital for our survival."
His mother smiled faintly despite the pain. "I'm glad… you're both alive…"
Lin Xue crossed her arms and stood tall, watching him.
"Seems like you've grown, Chen," she said. "We can't rely on the old world's rules anymore. From now on, strength is survival."
