Chapter 44 - Letters and Blades

After the Battle

Zhaoling still stood.

Its walls bore the scars of battle—arrowheads lodged in timber, bloodstains in the snow—but the banners of the Iron Core fluttered above it, proud and unbroken.

Inside the city, the people worked as if their lives depended on it—because they did.

Children helped carry water and bandages.

Women tended to the wounded in long halls turned into makeshift infirmaries.

The blacksmiths had not slept in three nights.

And at the center of it all, Lü Bu walked among them—not as a warlord, not yet—but as a man who bore their hopes on his shoulders.

He bled when they bled.

He endured when they endured.

That is why they followed him.

The Letter

Two days after the enemy's retreat, a messenger arrived.

He came not with a sword, but with a scroll. The seal was unmistakable—gold wax bearing the serpent crest of Prime Minister Liang Chen, lord of the north.

Lü Bu read the words in silence, standing in the war hall.

"Young lord of Zhaoling, the empire has taken note of your recent rise. Your efforts are… admirable. But power without sanction is a threat to order. You are invited to swear loyalty to House Liang. In return, you shall receive official recognition, grain support, and protection. Refusal will be seen as rebellion."

There was no threat written.

But everyone in the room heard it anyway.

Council Debate

The war table was filled.

Wei Yun leaned forward, fists clenched.

"They mean to wrap a chain around your neck and call it silk."

Lin Zhao remained calm, eyes on the letter.

"It's a smart move. If we refuse, they call us traitors. If we accept, we lose our freedom."

Han Jie—the most practical of them—nodded grimly.

"They know we're still weak. One more attack like last time and we won't survive. We need time. And food."

Lü Bu didn't speak for a long time.

He stepped outside, standing beneath the cold sky. Snowflakes drifted down like ashes.

"If we bow now, what was the point of surviving the fire?"

The Visitors

On the fourth day, they arrived—two figures riding sleek black horses, flanked by a dozen imperial guards.

They were not soldiers.

They were diplomats.

The elder one was Minister Gao, smooth-voiced and smiling like a blade wrapped in silk. His companion, a younger woman named Xian Fei, spoke rarely, but her eyes scanned every corner like a hawk.

"Lord Lü," Gao began, bowing deeply, "it is not every day that a man carves a city from stone and shadow. Zhaoling is impressive."

"Then why try to burn it down?" Lü Bu replied calmly.

Gao smiled wider.

"That was… an unfortunate misunderstanding. Some within the Liang family act without permission. We are here to correct that."

Over the next hours, they laid out their offer:

Grain shipments from the northern granaries.

An official title: Warden of the Northern Border.

Recognition in the imperial scrolls.

All for one thing:

"Swear loyalty to Prime Minister Liang."

Behind the Curtain

That night, Lü Bu met with Lin Zhao in the watchtower.

"They're hiding something," she said. "That woman, Xian Fei—she's not a diplomat. She's a spy, or worse. She never wrote down a word, never asked about trade. Only maps, soldiers, and guard shifts."

"They're scouting us."

Lü Bu nodded.

"And waiting. If we bend the knee, they'll send more than food. They'll send someone to replace me."

"And if we refuse?"

"They'll return with swords."

A Choice Made

In the war hall the next morning, Lü Bu summoned the diplomats.

The people gathered outside. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.

Lü Bu stood at the top of the stone steps. He spoke clearly—his voice strong but calm.

"Zhaoling bows to no lord who burns grain while children starve."

"We will trade with those who respect our walls, and ally with those who walk beside us—not above us."

"If Prime Minister Liang sees this as rebellion… then let the empire remember—Zhaoling was not born from mercy. It was born from fire."

Gasps echoed through the crowd.

Minister Gao's smile finally broke.

Xian Fei did not flinch.

They turned and left without a word.

Building the Future

Lü Bu knew what came next.

There would be war.

But he did not retreat into fear.

He expanded the barracks. Ordered construction of Frost Wall upgrades to reinforce the northern gates. Sent envoys south to minor clans who also feared Liang's shadow.

And for the first time, he opened a position in Zhaoling's court:

General of the Southern Watch — a role to be filled by a rising soldier not born of noble blood.

"We build not just walls," he told his people. "We build a future."

And the people believed him.
